    Nighthawk - Terrible

Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed.

I am a techie and love tech, but this router is garbage. I decided to purchase this in 2020 and worked great until firmware updates made this a paperweight. I have to reset this every other day at least now. I know it is not my modem or internet service provider. I generally replace every 4 years but this one I cant wait to throw in the garbage! There app is also garbage when it works - never again will I get their brand with a router. My modem is a netgear and works well - thought there would be synergy being the same brand but there has not unfortunately.

    Almost dead after 3 years

Unfortunately, after being a happy customer / user for almost 3 years with no issues, now have a problem that looks like hardware problem - all ethernet ports (WAN + LAN) are now limited / capped to 10 Mbps that is way low from 1Gbps it use to be (and definitely cannot handle 200 Mbps from my ISP :( ). It happened suddenly last week, have tried factory reset / firmware re-flash / downgrade, nothing helps, Netgear support no help as well, so if you look for long time investment - please take my case into consideration. BTW, I now back using my very old Apple AirPort Extreme (3-rd generation) that can still handle 1Gbps on all ethernet ports (with not such a good WIFI coverage though :( )

I replace a Netgear router N900 with this GARABAGE Nighthawk X6, after an update the router doesnt let Hulu app from any smart tv to connect. i know is the router because if i use my phone hotspot. the Hulu app works fine. i try different settings and try to downgrade the firmware and update it and no luck. call customer support and didnt want to help becuase is out warranty. Terrible support DO NOT buy this. Look for a different router different brand like Linksys, Asus or Arris. I will NOT buy another netgear product they have terrible support. they will get you big time.

    Terrible WiFi

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have owned this device for 2 years. It use to work great with LAN ports and WiFi. My internet is 250Mbps. I use to get 160+ mbps for my WiFi devices and 250mbps for my ethernet connected PC. Over the last 6 months my WiFi has gotten down to 3.2mbps. YES 3.2 like 1/2 of that old DSL stuff. I have the latest firmware etc... After hours on the internet I have learned there are 1000's of other owners with the same issue dating back to 6/2016. Netgear does not seem to care and has done nothing about the terrible WiFi and 17+ months have passed. Sad part is they still sale this modem on the open market. DO NOT BUY. I am about to throw mine into the trash can. It is a brick except for the ethernet ports.

    Great Name / Lousy Device

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Purchased the NETGEAR Nighthawk X6. Spent two days attempting to install. It would not connect to my SPECTRUM Cable. After numerous attempts I could only get one line to work. Having to use my iPhone to work an app is stupid. It should be as simple as hook it up and it works, like the AC1750. The X6 device was boxed back up and returned. I am lucky that the 1750 still works as I "hooked it up and it works". You people need to stop over complicating things. Remember "Plug and Play? The X6 isn't

    Only lasted 2 years..

Paid a good amount of money for this in the beginning of 2017. It worked good for my families needs however last night it just completely crapped out. The unit automatically shut off, when it is turned on the lights flash in unison. While flashing the lights get dimmer and dimmer until the unit shuts down. Hardware warranty is only a year. I expected a much longer service life for a product in this price range.

What A Nightmare, Please Avoid At All Cost!!!

I wouldn't wish this router on my worst enemy. I work from home and also home school my kids. It's very difficult to work when the router is constantly rebooting all day long. Not to mention that my security system is connected to the wifi also. So when the router decides to reboot my security system goes out. Very unhappy with this product!

    worst router ever

This hunk of absolute junk has been a nightmare. I have gone through 3 of these and now netgear refuses to replace it. this last one resets itself to factory default now about every 3 days. I am back to using my nighthawk 1900 that will only provide me with 94MBPS DL right now on my 300MBPS plan because it actually works. I am looking into a completely different brand I won't use netgear anymore even though I have been using them for 20 years.

Wish I never purchased this router

This router has routinely kicked all the mobile devices In my home off wifi resulting in numerous months of high phone bills. Bought it two months ago and it has been nothing but problems. When I enter the password provided on the router my ipads and phones say “wrong password”. So frustrating. I called netgear and they assisted me with a hard reset, still not working right. Im going to move on and scratch this off as a $300 loss. I would stay clear of this device!

    Netgear warranty is a joke

My unit went bad after 10 months. I called Netgear and went through all of the speed checks that are required to isolate the issue to the router. A Netgear rep told me I would have to purchase an extended warranty or they would not speak with me again. Best Buy customer service would not allow me to return the unit fir a replacement even though I had the receipt. $300 bucks out the window. I will get an Asus to replace this p 0 s.

    Stopped working after 18 months

This product worked great until 18 months from purchase when it stopped & we paid $449. We’ve been disappointed in this product along with Best Buy and NetGear’s support of the router. We will not do business with either again. I recommend purchasing Linksys Velop from another retailer. This is junk. Internet input jack stopped working but internet works on two older routers so we isolated to router. Internet provider also recommended using a different product as they’ve heard bad reviews on the support line.

Followed instructions aa written and the wifi was working for 5 or less minutes. Then the router kicked us off the network and asked for password. When entered, it stated wrong password. We called Netgear & waited 30 minutes. Rep tried to say it was a password issue but we knew that it was a connectivity issue. Returned for another brand and definitely would not recommend this router.

    Beware of firmware updates

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This router was amazing for two years until the latest firmware update. It literally crashes twice a day and requires a reboot. Netgear does not care to help their customers and after my last phone call to their support line, I am done with Netgear. Absolutely useless and they claim the firmware is flawless.

1st problem: usb drive contents not accessable remotely with app. 2nd problem: wifi coverage not great. Not good @36 ft. I expected more. 3rd problem was the deal breaker. I had 110 Mbps speed internet and was getting 80's no big deal. Moved to gig speed and still got 80 through the wan port. Direct to the cable modem was over 700Mbps. Returned to the store.

Started out okay, but now finding out that it has a serious flaw that leads to frequent wifi drops, (see link). If you want a router that will require you learn how to update to old firmware with security flaws, this is the router for you. https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/R8000P-dropping-wifi-connection/m-p/1485588/highlight/false#M79415

    easy setup

The Nighthawk was easy to setup. The only place I got 5 bars was in the same room as my modem/router. I went to my garage and had 1 bar on my Roku. Went in my bed room got 1 bar. I had gotten a cheap extender from amazon that gives me 3 bars in garage, 5 bars in bed room and I can watch Roku. This is going back today.
