    An epic change

None of the other happy campers leaving the five star reviews are exaggerating when they say good things about this router. Right away I noticed it made a huge difference in the speed of my home network. My previous router, which I purchased a few years ago, was supposed to be high end. It blipped out easily, I couldn't work easily in my home office while someone was streaming a movie in the living room. So what did I do? Blamed the cable provider. Though I still think they are evil, my blame was probably misplaced. I ran a little speed test plugging in my computer directly to the cable modem. I got the speeds the cable provider promised and my suspicions turned to my router. I remembered an article I read a few weeks ago about how technology outpaced most routers on the market and how many of us shell out cash for faster internet but are hobbled by our LANs' effectiveness: a bit like taking a bicycle out on the autobahn. I decided that if I was going to replace my router I wasn't going to cheap out. My need for reasonable network speeds was too great. I did my research, I read the reviews on here. Being a new product, there weren't many but I figured I'd add to the chorus of folks who are pleased as punch with the AC5300. The speeds I'm getting now are ridiculously fast with minimal loss between what the direct to cable modem offers and the actual wifi speeds I experience. I've got an old repeater in my home office to deal with the devices that need to be wired, but are nowhere near the modem. I'll admit, the repeater is no spring chicken technology-wise either, and even it seems pretty darn fast now. The difference is night and day. I get a full wireless signal on the sidewalk in front of my house now, even in 5 GhZ band. The four big thick antennas sure seem to throw a strong signal, but you should know, as routers go, this thing is a beast. If you only have space for a regular-sized router you may want to consider another model. Sure, it's got a stupid name (Nighthawk? Really?) and looks like the industrial designer took his cues from the same people who dreamed up Darth Vader's suit or Borg Collective cube ships. It may look kind of menacing, but so far it's been all good. This little baby can assimilate me any day.

Bought the Nighthawk X8 to replace my NetGear AC1750 (R6300) because I thought there have been enough router improvements (i.e. Moving from a dualband to a triband, etc) to justify the big $ price tag of the X8. In fact the X8 is 6 models now above my aging AC1750. I have XFinity as my carrier and I do pay for Extreme 105 internet. So what did I get for my money? Nothing. My wireless speed test on the AC1750 is 125mbps. The X8 = 126mbps. No where in the house was there a speed improvement. No where in the house was there a range improvement - the far ends of the house and basement still had average signal. Oh, I did have the second 5G band which I thought was going to be the only argument to justify the X8 $$$, but sadly 3 hours into the system up and running second 5G band just shut down and disappeared. None of my devices would detect it, and that was after a complete power down and reset of the X8 and the Xfinity modem. And yes, I successfully performed the firmware update which was needed right out of the box. Unlike others who have reported a negative experience with the X8, I don't waste my time anymore with NetGear technical support. Either it delivers or it goes back - my time is too valuable. Bottom line - This is a way overpriced router with presumably the best of technology that unfortunately just doesn't deliver.

I have major issues in my house as far as wifi goes....poor signal...been having trouble for years. I have been using the router provided by Charter. (Bad decision) This router (advised to purchase by a Geek Squad guy) definitely improved the signal, but not like I was expecting. I'm sure those with a decent signal would experience marked improvement.

Easy to install and up the signal greatly. Match it to at least a 100 mbs modem and you are good to go.

Absolutely love this router. I had a linksys for the last three years and it was by far the worst piece of hot garbage I have ever had. This new netgear router is amazing. I am a network sys admin and this has a lot of the same bells and whistles our corporate routers have. It's extremely stable and has great radios. I will never leave netgear again!!
