Well, it's a router. It replaced an older Netgear, which was the top of the line model 5 years ago. Did I notice improvement in bandwith? Yep. Was it monumental and worth the price tag? Sadly, no. Pros: Built like a tank. Impresses your geek friends. Looks like an alien. Cons: Price tag is STEEP

Disclaimer: I received this product for free through Netgear's Friends and Family program. This is an unbiased review. This is a beastly router. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and have not had a single problem with it. Quick and easy setup. No drops and no loss in speed. We have about 6 devices that connect to it and I love how it has 3 different band widths to ensure all devices are receiving optimal signal strength. I also love the added touch with the LED on the antennas for visual appeal. I also like that this unit allows for firmware updates so that you can keep up with any changes. The only cons I have for this are the size and cost. I personally don't mind the size because I have a spot for it, but I could see how this may pose a concern for others. However, I do love the look of it as it is not the shape of your normal rectangular box router. It has a wavey look on top which I find pretty cool. As for the cost, I can see how this may deter some folks who do not require a whole lot of internet speed. However, for those gamers and households that stream tons, this may be worth your while. All in all, I absolutely love this router and have not had a single issue with speed. I've performed multiple speed tests and I'm getting just above the maximum speed that I'm paying for. So I'm a really happy customer.

Comparing to my old netgear N600. 2.4 ghz good! Getting full 60Mbs+ download. And 5-6Mbs upload speeds my internet service provider offers(Charter). In almost all areas of my home(2200 sq foot tri level). Router in basement center of house. No complaints on the 2.4Ghz band 5Ghz not as good. Signal strength is no better then my old N600. I realize the router in the basement is not the best place for it, but I expected the 5Ghz signal to be better than my 4 year old N600. USB storage device(64GB HP flash stick) with pictures stored. All my dnla devices(smart tv's , etc..) see the N8500 just fine, but after a while the pictures stored on the ready share usbstick disappear from dlna. Reseating the USB stick in the router they reappear. This happens a lot! Tried both usb2 and usb3 ports, same issue. I'm flashed to the latest firmware. I'm not totally happy with the router, but the 2.4 Ghz range/speed is really good. So I'm keeping it. Hopefully a future firmware fixes the issues.

Worth the price if you want the flexibility of having a WIFI Signal throughout your house and outside. Has the added value of making your printer accessible to your other devices such as IPhone or IPad.
