One of the coolest Gadgets I've Seen in Years

This is one of those magical little tech solutions that you read about and think, "Okay... this can't be possible." But it totally is! It converts your power grid into an ethernet grid. I don't know how it works, but it freaking works. I've been using it for a while now, and I've seen no negative side effects. If you have a part of your house that's hard to reach (for me it was an xbox in my basement) this is a nifty little way to create a plug-in quality of connection without drilling holes for wires. In my case (just to give you an idea): At the modem, I have plug-in speeds in excess of 75 mbps. Via the wireless router component of said modem, in my basement, I had a speed of 9 mbps. Simply awful, and useless for online gaming. I plugged one of these behind my modem, one in my basement, ran an ethernet cord to my modem, an ethernet cord to my xbox, and instantly I had a connection of 35 mbps. So obviously, some speed was lost through the power grid, but compared to what I was working with, this was a game-changer. Literally. I have had to reset the configuration once since purchase, but doing so took me 10 minutes, and I think the cause of the failure was in the ethernet cords, not this product. No issues since.

The Netgear Powerline adapter is an OK tool if you have limited options. If you simply need to get a wired connection to a remote portion of your home, this will do the job. You can even pair them up with multiple receivers to spread the love even more. I was able to get a decent connection in a number of locations in my home, but it was not stable enough for a continuous stream of data. There would be drop-outs of the signal. This is not an issue for typical network use where packets can be delayed, but my goal was to run some surveilance video without having to run new network lines. The dropouts made it unusable. Netgear does not offer any type of troubleshooting beyond simple installation. There are no best practices - 'for best performance, use it this way' for example. Just plug it in, and it should work. And it does, but not if you really need performance. With it rated at 1.2 gbps I think it's fair to expect some level of performance. In summary, this is a good choice for light to medium duty or home use, but not if you need a more robust connection.

These have been great. I had to change the location and which plugs I used a few times to get a solid connection, but once I found the correct outlets it worked well. It works better the less junctions you have in the line. I have not tried a file transfer test to see the speeds, but my 30 meg internet stays solid and my ping times are far more steady then it was on wireless.

I only have a couple of weeks with it but so far it does the job with no issues. Something that I'd add is the bypass power outlet as this one does not have it but for the price I think it's ok. I don't use it with bandwidth demanding devices so I can't comment on that it deliver the speed it advertises.

Living in a rented house with lath-and-plaster construction can be an obstacle in a good wired setup. While these won't get you the kind of speed or reliability that CAT6 would, it works, it's a simple setup, and is probably a good trade-off for the time and money spent trying to run cable in an old house.

As a remote medical coder it’s important to be hard wired to my computer but when we recently moved my modem was too far to run a cord to so this became the way to do it. I’ll admit at first I had some problems because I plugged it into a power strip but once I plugged into the wall it worked perfectly. Also great experience at my local Best Buy, everyone there was so helpful.
