Customers are saying

Customers are pleased with the Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender's ease of use, Wi-Fi range, and signal strength. Many appreciate its quick setup, compact size, and good performance for the price. However, some experienced connection instability, and compatibility issues were also reported by a few users. The Ethernet port was a welcome feature for some.

    GREAT Extender! Better than Expected!!!

I must admit, I doubted that this thing was going to work correctly but I was completely wrong!!! In fact, this might be the first time I've ever reviewed a product....that's how happy I am with it! My first install (11-24-12) was at my mother-in-law's house where she desperately needed her Wi-Fi extended into a portion of her house. The initial setup sux; I'm not going to lie! I am tech-savvy but I'm not even entirely sure how I finally got it setup correctly! Eventually, though, it started repeating her Wi-Fi signal. This is where it shines!!! The signal that comes from this thing is far greater than the wireless modem she uses (CenturyTel) and the loading of web pages is FASTER than her regular modem (I'm not sure how that's possible since the internet signal has to pass-through the factory modem, first). Regardless, I can travel all over her 7500 sq ft home with little drop in signal strength and NO DROP in internet speed! So...I decided that maybe she just had a junky DSL wireless modem but with better providers I would have different results... WRONG AGAIN!!! Second Install: At my house, I installed this last night (11-26-12) in conjunction w/ my Verizon FIOS wireless modem. Again...setup SUCKED but I finally got it going. AND......Once again.....The signal and speed are amazing. The internet surfing is soooo much faster than before. I can't wait to stream movies from my Apple TV2 cuz I have a feeling this is going to download them super-quick! CONS: Initial Setup is tricky PROS: Great Range, Faster Internet Speeds

So easy I could even do it

After reading the reviews, my wife & I went to Best Buy and purchased it. Took it home, followed the directions and (having patience for the set up process to complete) the set up was complete. This was so easy, even for techno deficient people like us. Works like a charm--strong signal where there was weak signals before.

Way better extender than Belkin and Linksys

    Posted .

I settled on this extender after trying the Belkin and Linksys models. I have an establish wireless N network with multiple devices already connected and wanted better coverage downstairs for use w/Ipad, etc. The Linksys has good form factor like this Netgear, but flawed in that it would not allow me to either have unique extender SSID nor would it allow me to prevent broadcast of the extender SSID (see my review of that product) so I returned it. Belkin is large, cumbersome and would not allow my exhisting WPS2 security key saying @ symbol is invalid character even though my Belkin router uses @ symbol just fine (see my review of that product). This Netgear allows unique SSID so you know which SSID device is connected to, allows concealment of extender SSID (don't have to broadcast it), has great performance and is very convenient small form factor that plugs right into AC outlet. I have not experienced issues with settings being lost when unplugged that other reviewers mention but even if that issue exists, this is by far the best in home extender solution for my use.

Great for connecting a computer via Ethernet

The main reason I purchased this unit was to connect a desktop computer via the Ethernet port. The computer does not have wireless capability and the router is located in a different room so I had limited options. I decided to purchase this to connect to my wifi router and plug it in next to the computer and run an Ethernet cable from this wifi range extender to the computer itself. It was very easy to set up and I had an internet connection at the computer in less than 5 minutes.

Took about 2 minutes to set up once you read the directions. I have a 2700 sq ft house and had very spotty coverage of my wifi. Now I dont have any issues. My router and my home office are in exact opposite corners of the house but I have no issues.

Our Linksey's G is located in our basement office about 60 feet from our bed room and the signal there is very week. The NetGear universal is plugged into a wall outlet about 50 feet from the main unit. The set up took 5 minutes, maybe less and worked like a charm!!! The connection is fantastic and the signal is strong. I HIGHLY recomend!

Plugged it into my wall, followed the simple install procedures. I have a D-Link router, but setup was still incredibly easy. Took less than a minute, and bingo; great coverage in the back of the house. Ipad is working great, wife is now happy, and so am I. I would recommend this in a heartbeat.

The NETGEAR - Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender was everything I needed to get Wi-Fi out to my shop in the garage. Good performance, easy setup for the WPS method I used. What I DID NOT NEED was the blatant up sell attempt from the Best Buy salesperson. Seems an automatic response now at Best Buy - you pick out the item that you have researched and decide to buy. Then the salesperson immediately tries to up sell to a much more expensive item, without regard to your needs.

My review is not going to say much different than the other positive reviews here and elsewhere online. So, I'll just speak on my unique experience. Was interested in this item because I just installed cable company's bundle, and their equipment, as many know, sucks monkey marbles. Didn't have any range problems with my other vendor, so thought nothing of it, until it was gone. Easy to set up, however, found that it was much easier to set up from my iMac than my laptop PC. The laptop found the device, but kept looking for other networks. But on the iMac, as soon as it found the signal, auto popped Safari and the Netgear setup page. A click here, a keystroke there, done! Another item to note, but knowing going in, you will lose a bit of bandwidth regardless. Wired at main router 70mbps, wireless at main router 40mpbs, at Extender 15mpbs. My media center is where I needed the extra range, which is another 15-20' away from the Extender. And before installing it, the range to the main router was 1mpbs!! Monkey Marbles indeed!! After the Extender, 12mpbs...TOTALLY ACCEPTABLE! Hope this helps your buying decision. I highly recommend it!

We have a weak wireless signal outside with our existing router. This device was refreshingly easy to install and works well. I now have an adequate signal everywhere on our one acre property. The device is plugged into an outlet on the first floor with the router being on the second floor. Great wireless signal in every room of our house including the basement.

Bought this for a customer. She has a ranch style house where her cable modem was on one end of the house. She recently bought a new LCD TV w/ Bluray player and wanted to stream VUDU. However, TV was located on the opposite end of the house and wireless signal was extremely weak. I plugged this unit in an outlet that was about the equal distance between her Cable modem and the TV. Setup was very simple and intuitive. The TV is now picking up the new SSID from the extender at full bar with 54 mbps. She could not be happier... At $69, I think the price is a little steep. $40 would be a perfect price point...

    Works great once set up

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This product works great once it is set up and effectively increases the range on my home network. I'm using this with a Netgear wireless router which should simplify the set-up (both the router and.the range extender are WPS enabled which simpifies set-up). However, the "gotcha" was the level of encryption [WPA-PSK(TKIP) +WPA2-PSK(AES)] I had my wireless network set-up with. I could not complete the range extender set-up with this level of encryption. When I backed off the encryption level on my wireless network to WPA2-PSK(AES), the set-up worked fine. The range extender user guide says the WPA-PSK(TKIP) +WPA2-PSK(AES) security encrytion level should work but it did not.

Product does exactly as it states. This wifi extender works better than my router itself. Once I placed it in the center of my home I have full bars through out the house. This product is a no brainer for the price.

I needed to extend my wireless Internet range outside to my guest house and this item allowed me to do exactly that. When inside the guest house my Wi-Fi signal didn’t even show up. Now when inside the main house I still use my main Wi-Fi signal because I get better download speed. Yes the cheaper repeaters cut it in half. They use the same exact channel to retransmit the data. There are repeaters that cost more that have 2 radios in them and they run a connection between the repeater and the router on one channel and the connection between the repeater and the PC on another. Those types of repeaters do not slow the traffic down as much because they can transmit on both radio channels at the same time but of course cost a lot more.

Overall the range extender does its job well. I am not entirely convinced about the additional range I am getting, but that could be do to the location I have it in. The installation is as easy as stated, especially if you use the automatic configuration option. Press of 2 buttons and your extender is configured in 5 min.

5 min install and works excellent

We had 2 bedrooms and a bathroom that were getting 1 bar or less of wireless signal strength. My son literally took this out the package and in 5 minutes it was installed and working perfectly. We now have 5 bars ( the max ) is those areas. we have a netgear router ( which in my opinion should be able to reach those areas. I wrote large house above, but the truth is it's a medium size house . Anyway, I thought that getting a netgear range extender might make installation simpler. My son (age 22) said it wouldn't have mattered. I also looked at the larger size, but solely bought this because it was smaller, white (yes- that was a factor in my decision) and plugged into the wall socket. Anyway, it works perfectly, and I'm happy to be able to use my Kindle Fire in my bedroom

Extends range but seems to disconnect often

    Posted .

The extender was fairly simple to set up. I just hooked it up through the LAN, and set it up through another PC hooked up. The set up interface is simple enough. The range seems to be excellent. I placed it at the edge of my regular wireless router's range, and it did great. The BIG issue I have with this device is that it keeps disconnecting from the network. I will have my PC's wireless turned on and connected, but then in the midst of playing an online game, it will suddenly disconnect. I doesn't always do this though, it seems that it happens once a week and during peak hours.

It really increased the range of my desktop (laptop not applicable) and my printer. Especially the printer, because its location in relation to the main router and laptop was more of an issue. All devices work great and with huge signal strength improvement, even for my iPhone! It may be a tad slower than the main router, and it states that in the documentation, but it has almost been unnoticeable to me.

Extends full signal all over my house & patio. Covers. All the previous weak areas. I wish it did not create a separate connection. I expected a extender to extend the existing connection. Easy set up.
