Night Owl - 10 Channel 4 Camera 1080p HD Indoor/Outdoor Wireless NVR Surveillance System with 1TB Hard Drive - White/Black - $399.99 Model:WNIP2-4L1 This is as close as I’m going to get to reproducing a surveillance system rivaling that of a casino or Fort Knox. My house now bristles with cameras. I’m OK, neighbors. Really. I can readily manage the full range of features on a Tv screen or monitor, including continuous observation. Or, I can simplify my interaction with the Night Owl system by using the phone App which contains a useful subset of features, including downloading recorded “events”, and viewing/listening through all my cameras from anywhere. I’ve done all of this during my first few days of owning my system. It all works, slickly, easily. Of course I’ll point out some issues during this review. I liked the end result and can recommend this Night Owl system. Getting to this end result took some effort, however. SETUP and LOGISTICS: The Night Owl is almost intimidating when you unload the box of cameras, antennas, power supplies, and the DVR. Helpfully, the Night Owl Web site has an extensive set of videos to help understand its approach to security systems. The printed instructions are very well done, fully diagrammed and presented on a readable glossy foldout. The Night Owl WNIP2 system is so close to being a turn-key system, but right now it’s just as easy to get lost in the weeds. The install videos didn’t anticipate my issues. I quickly got into trouble by entering my validation phone number wrong. Oops. I needed to follow a trail of problem-solving instructions, resetting my new account. It was accomplished by careful reading and jumping through several links. Doable, but it was a problem unique to us typing klutzes. I then moved along in Setup using a Wizard that begins on the DVR/monitor and finishes on the phone App. Plan ahead. Seriously. The Night Owl’s IP based security system forces you to think carefully about how you will distribute its components and access the resulting recordings. First up, you need to have cameras plugged into an outlet. The power bricks for each camera are on removable, 6ft, thin cables for flexibility and concealment. [If I was Night Owl, I’d throw a couple of 15ft extensions into the box. Maybe white?] Although setup only requires that you have a TV/monitor for the initial pairing of your cameras, I found it useful to continue having access to a monitor for viewing recordings and managing settings. The phone App is missing what I felt were important setting controls which are easy to use at the DVR connected to the TV/monitor. The App was fully useful for LIVE viewing the cameras, for reviewing recordings and searching for events, and for modifying some parameters. The DVR/tv/monitor lets you use a very comprehensive main menu, managing every aspect of camera function, finer management of recordings, and, of course, hard drive maintenance. I decided to place the DVR near one of my TVs which was also near an ethernet port for my home network. Many end users will need to consider setting the DVR near their router which may or may not have a TV co-located. You must have an ethernet connection between the Night Owl DVR and your router. That nearby TV/monitor must have an HDMI input to hard wire to the DVR. Night owl provides cables for both, along with a mouse to move around the menu that appears on your chosen screen. Plan ahead. Now you’re ready to have the DVR recognize your cameras. I have a 2800SqFt, one floor home with full brick exterior as well as one inside brick feature wall. My DVR location was set far to the rear of my house, near only one camera. All other cameras would eventually be placed at the front corners of my house — after the initial camera pairings described next. Remember, the Night Owl DVR creates its own WiFi network with its paired cameras. It does NOT rely on nor burden your Wi-Fi. The quality of your WiFi is irrelevant. Night Owl’s WiFi network is definitely up to the task. Night Owl wants you to first link those cameras while they are near the DVR, NOT in their final locations. Trust them. I intentionally set the cameras about 30 feet away and pairing with the DVR was hit and miss. I know you’re thinking the final range will be awfully limited. Nope. Not at all. Once the cameras are paired at a close distance at initial setup, you can move them out to a great distance from the DVR and receive a stable image. The range of the DVR to each camera far exceeded anything I’ve previously tested with any other security camera and multiple walls were not an issue. You view the real-time, camera connection quality (speed) in the main program menu. PERFORMANCE: Images on either my TV/monitor or phone were sharp, colorful, and detailed. Adjusting image or audio parameters was accomplished on either device. Night-time monitoring showed the cameras had gone B&W, with very well lit, sharp images. The resulting recordings are readily accessible. Using a connected monitor and a USB drive, recordings can be downloaded and archived. I haven’t tested it yet, but Night Owl provides details in the manual and has videos for everything. You can also download and send videos to your email or other services on your phone! Interaction with your security system is intuitive and you can set push notifications when events occur. You adjust camera sensitivity and responsiveness to human images. Or you can create a schedule of when events are/are not recorded. My pictures were taken from the App (all vertical photos) or from the DVR/monitor (horizontal photos). I took these pics prior to assigning names to the cameras, which should make managing a bunch of cameras much easier. You can turn on/off features like the audio or spotlight and change motion sensitivity most easily and confidently from the DVR/monitor. COMPLAINTS: The mobile App could have a more complete set of management tools, mirroring those from the DVR/monitor interactions. Using a mouse to manage the DVR is awkward, considering the DVR will typically be in an inaccessible locations, inconveniently oriented with respect to a nearby screen. Of course, a PC/Mac based App would also be nice. Some of the actions available on the App are buried in the menu structure. Some functions showing on the App are disabled. I Chatted with Night Owl about this, and they explained that the software is still being revised. Even during device re-install there was a revision download, so it was an honest response. If you have overscan on your TV/monitor using the DVR-HDMI input, menus may pushed partly off the bottom of the screen. On the LG TV/monitors, I used “JUST” in the aspect ratio menu which corrected that issue. Make it easier to buy one or more cameras. The Online Night Owl product page was not helpful. Add power extension cables to your products. I needed to use Chat Service Support to solve a problem where my App didn’t see any events that were collecting and fully viewable on the DVR using the monitor connection. The Chat Queue was too long. Then, Night Owl’s Chat dropped me out of Queue position and pushed me to the end. Ouch!!! It was a glitch. Gotta correct that folks. Customers will not share my persistence or patience. Customer Service, however, was remarkable. PATIENT. Knowledgeable. PATIENT. Relentless in pursuit of a solution. My problem got solved. SUMMARY: Security systems take different approaches to managing all those cameras. They might be powered by a nearby outlet, battery powered, or use a powered ethernet cable. Video signals might alternately be sent via wireless or that specialized ethernet cable. Or, using the approach taken here by Night Owl, a wireless link to a central DVR is matched with power coming from a nearby outlet. It is my preferred solution. And, of course, NO fees, ever. You’ve got decisions to make. Night Owl’s system is a one time expense where I can control the storage, control where the cameras are located, and change my mind as needed. Adding more (as many as 6 additional) cameras to the system is just a one time expense. I can even change my mind about where I monitor my cameras from or just stick with the phone/tablet App, exclusively. And, because I connected my Night Owl DVR to my router, I can access it from an infinite distance using those same mobile devices. But the system works if not connected to the Internet (minus remote access)! I like the operational and cost control the Night Owl system provides to me. The setup was had a few detours (some caused by me, others unexplained), and requiring patience and some problem solving. And, yet, I’m currently looking at a few more cameras to add to my system. I’m scoring based on the very functional finished/installed product. Set aside enough time to get here and I think you’ll agree.

Thank you for the very detailed review of your new product. We appreciate the time and effort you put into it. It looks as though you had minimal difficulty getting the Wi-Fi NVR and cameras setup. It also looks like you found the self-help articles and videos to be beneficial in assisting you. One of the complaints that you noted is the wired USB mouse used to control the Wi-Fi NVR. While we do include a wired USB mouse, you can substitute that for a wireless mouse with dongle. This would enable you to access the menu with more ease, due to your setup. As mentioned, we are still working on the App as we continue to receive feedback from customers. We want it to be easy to navigate and access for all customers, which requires tweaking here and there as we receive feedback and grow. As of now, the App is easy to use, simple to setup, and allows customers to live view and access their recordings with relative ease. It sounds as though, overall, you are pleased with the product which we are happy to hear. If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you.

Bottom Line: The NightOwl Wireless Surveillance System does its job well, although it’s not truly a wireless system. Pros: clear 1080p video; good motion detection; camera spotlight is useful; versatile and robust monitoring options; easy to use Cons: needs to be connected to a TV/monitor for setup (and after for best performance); WNVR must be hardwired to router for internet access; cameras need to be installed near electrical outlets; large camera antenna Review: Out of the box, setup is fairly straightforward, although it does require that the “Wireless Network Video Recorder” (WNVR) is connected to a TV/monitor and router via the included HDMI and Ethernet cables. This could be inconvenient if you don’t have a TV and router located next to each other. The system is then controlled during initial setup using the included USB-mouse, which goes quickly. Once setup is complete the system can be accessed via the NightOwl Protect app, and I had no issues connecting the cameras to the WNVR or seeing the video feed/recordings on the app. The bigger issue for my installation is that I’m using the system to monitor the interior and exterior of my detached garage. I have a mesh networked installed in my house that does cover the area, but the WNVR must be hardwired via an Ethernet cable to the router for internet access / app usage. Unfortunately, this is simply not possible with my setup (the installation video also states the WNVR will NOT work with a WiFi repeater or extender, although I plan on giving it a try). This means that I must use the system offline, which then requires that I have a monitor and mouse connected to access the system. Installation of the cameras was fairly straightforward, but there are two important points to note. First, they are not battery powered and must be located within 10 feet of an outlet (otherwise you will need an extension cord). Second, the camera antenna is fairly long (you can rotate it in different directions), which could make placement in tight places tricky. Once connected, the cameras produce a good quality 1080p picture both in daylight and the dark. I also like that the cameras include a spotlight that activates when motion is detected, although this feature can be toggled off through the system. Interestingly, the cameras also have a micro-SD card slot, although I didn’t see any documentation on how to do local recording just on the cameras. Once the system is installed, monitoring the feeds, viewing the recordings, and changing the settings is quite simple via a connected monitor and mouse. You can watch all of the streams simultaneously or full-screen a single stream. The recordings can easily be selected and viewed by clicking on their timestamps. The system also allows you to change motion detection settings (e.g., sensitivity, motion detection area) and camera settings (e.g., resolution and spotlight). Overall, I find the system to do a good job at meeting my home security needs.

Thank you for the review and informative feedback. It sounds as though overall, you found setup to be simple and straightforward. As you noted, the 1080p resolution provides a very clear and sharp image day or night. The cameras are also 2-way audio enabled which adds an extra layer of security to your home. You can hear what is occurring around each camera and speak through the App, like an intercom. The Built-In Spotlights are also a great deterrent and help keep would be criminals at bay. It seems as though you had 2 main critiques: 1) the system being AC Powered and 2) the NVR needing to be hardwired to your router for remote viewing. We understand your position regarding these 2 areas and appreciate your input. The cameras being AC Powered does alleviate a host of other issues, such as losing the camera feed due to dead batteries and having to change or recharge your batteries, both of which are a hassle. For remote viewing, the device must be wired to your router using Ethernet cable to ensure a quality connection is made and for security reasons. We want our customers and their information to be as safe as possible. We thank you for choosing Night Owl and value the feedback you provided.

First thing's first - I pulled out everything from the packaging and put the DVR together, then plugged up all the cameras with power cords in the power strip to test them (don't want to mount them and then find out there's a problem!). Setup on the DVR side was extremely easy, just follow the prompts. I did run into one small issue but it wasn't the fault of the system - this setup requires a display that has HDMI input as well as 1080p display, so my old VGA 1440x900 monitor didn't work, so I hooked it up to my 50" TV for testing purposes. Cameras as SHARP - very high quality picture and picks even low-level audio. NOTE - Best Buy's website says no night vision - that's not right! These have extremely good night vision, with the exception of people - people in the night vision were washed out - everything else was sharp! See attached photo. I cropped someone out that didn't want to be in the photo. I'm curious to see how far the 1TB gets me - I've had 1TB systems before but not with audio, curious to see how far that cuts down the retention time. Overall this is the easiest setup I've experienced with a camera system - VERY nice! Highly recommend!

Good afternoon and thank you for the review! The product is showing Yes to Night Vision with up to 100 ft. of visibility on the product page now. Thank you for making us aware of that. We are so happy to hear the product is meeting your expectations and that the image quality is impressing. You are correct about the TV resolution (must be a minimum) of 1080p as you noted. Thank you again for the feedback and for being a Night Owl customer!

Our previous home security "system" consisted of two stand-alone wireless 2K cameras with a cloud-based app for surveillance and monitoring. Performance was adequate for our needs, but we were interested in creating a more robust system with greater coverage in and around the house so we checked out the Night Owl NVR system as an alternative. Although the Night Owl drops camera resolution by half to "only" 1080p, it ups the ante on a few key features in a relatively economical and reasonably complete package. Once you power through the *fairly* straight-forward setup, you're left with what will feel a lot like a semi-professional level security system suitable even for small business, not just home security. PROs: - Integrated camera spotlights (yes, you can turn them off once you find the proper setting buried deep in the NVR menu) make these suitable not only for night-vision use, but secluded entryway/door duty where just the presence of a light would be an added deterrent, convenience, or safety feature (like illuminating a dark patio entry or stairwell) - Although some features become unavailable (esp. remote monitoring), the system can be operated completely off the Internet if you have security concerns about "someone else" spying on your surveillance feeds - On-demand 2-way intercom audio from the companion app is serviceable and definitely helpful for things like remote door conversations or telling the kids it's time to come in from the pool - NVR and system setup is pretty straightforward if you've got the right equipment nearby--the low profile hub/recording device isn't much bigger than a home router or small cable box and the included PC-style mouse, Ethernet cable, and HDMI cable means you don't have to hunt for extra hardware to get up and running - Camera has very clear full HD day/night image quality with digital zoomable picture - Smart in-app notifications based on movement (pixel changes in the video feed) or object detection (people or faces) with live-feed video or review of previously detected event - Cameras feature their own MicroSD slot for even more backup piece of mind--short of a total power failure, these cameras can continue to capture and record video even with a failure of the NVR or its hard drive - Very clean and unobtrusive camera face perfect if you want to conceal your installation--our last security cameras featured a series of IR LEDs around the circumference of the camera face (I've included a comparison photo with this review)--at night, you could easily see a ring light red LEDs encircling the front of the camera which is NOT the case with the Night Owl - Creates its own WIFI network just for the security cameras so you won't be competing with multiple HD video feeds on your own WIFI network - Relatively easy to capture and review videos in the Night Owl companion app or even the NVR if your needs are simple, but the configuration/options menu in the NVR are extensive and therefore provide a great deal of flexibility to customize the system to your liking (for example, you can define motion detection to trigger only on movement within particular areas of the video feed, i.e. a person or car pulling up into your driveway rather than triggering on every passing vehicle on the street) CONs: - Calling these cameras "INDOOR/OUTDOOR" is maybe a bit generous when it comes to indoor mounting--they don't stand up on their own so they're not really suited to placement on a high shelf or bookcase like some other IP-based home security cameras; you will need to work at mounting these high on a wall which presents its own set of challenges - Camera construction feels a little on the "economical" side with very light plastic all around--mounted high and away from access, they'll probably be fine, but a little sturdier build quality would have been more reassuring - Camera antennae are LONG...nearly 7"...though this may help boost signal strength to more distant endpoints, it might also create some mounting challenges if you were eying a particularly tight corner under an overhang or something - Not necessarily a drawback of the Night Owl per se so much as a cautionary tale for any system like this one--the cameras are wireless only in that you don't need to run network or video cabling around your house for signal distribution; they still need their own power source which means you may have some electrical work to do (I don't know about your house, but we don't have any outlets conveniently placed high enough on walls to prevent unsightly cables from dangling all the way down to the floor) - Depending on how your network and other home electronics are set up, you may have some logistical challenges installing the system--you need to place the main NVR centrally in your home (for optimum signal reception and distribution to/from the cameras) and your router or modem (hopefully it's also nearby???) needs an empty Ethernet port; you'll also need a computer monitor or TV in close proximity as well as you cannot set up the entire system using an app or tablet because the mouse-driven NVR is necessary to getting the system online and configured - The security spotlight is a nice convenience/deterrent and in a dark room inside a house it's pretty effective; but it's got a fairly limited range for outdoor use--don't expect it to substitute for a strong area spotlight if you want to illuminate a large portion of your driveway/yard - The audio intercom performance was passable MOST of the time, but the little speaker on the camera face can only do so much--I could hear relatively clear sound captured by the camera's mic from inside the companion app, but audio coming from the camera's speaker was often choppy and highly distorted, like the volume level was set higher than the speaker could reasonably handle (I haven't figured out yet if that's configurable inside the main NVR interface) - As indicated above, the customization options in the NVR system hub are actually QUITE extensive, to the point where it's sometimes unclear where to find something. For instance, turning off the spotlight function (because we really didn't want it going off inside our house every time we passed the entryway) is buried in the "Record" sub-menu rather than under "Camera" where you might expect it...this is one 57 page manual I'll probably end up reading cover-to-cover Overall, we're pretty pleased with this new Night Owl surveillance system. The picture quality, both daylight and night vision, really is quite clear and the companion app with smart/push notifications & live view of all cameras/active feeds, coupled with a very sophisticated surveillance/review hub accessible on the NVR, make for a very capable and professional-feeling system overall. We really like the isolated WIFI distribution network so our security cameras are not fighting with all our other wireless devices for bandwidth, and the fact that our videos can be captured locally rather than depending on a cloud service for storage or access (though remote access on-the-go via the companion app does require that the system be hooked up to the Internet). Couple that with the extensive NVR functions (more than we're likely to use any time soon), built-in camera spotlight and 2-way audio intercom, and it's a pretty robust system overall. It's not necessarily a 20-minute plug-and-play job as you will need to spend some time mounting the cameras and and accounting for power requirements, but if you've got the patience and expertise to handle the installation, I think you'll be happy with the results.

Thank you so much for the honest and detailed feedback you have provided. We appreciate it and will use it to make our product even better. As you noted, there are many benefits to this Wi-Fi security solution including 2-Way Audio, Built-In Wi-Fi (which allows for CCTV usage), no changing or recharging batteries, bright LED spotlights, crisp and clear images and ease of setup. You are correct in noting the cameras are much lighter than our older ones. They are made from a newer lighter weight material. This material is every bit as durable and has the same or better weather-resistant rating and operating temperatures. So long as adequate care is taken with them, they will continue providing detailed images for a long time. You are also correct in noting there are some limitations with camera mounting, particularly how far the cameras can be placed from the NVR. They can be up to 300 ft. with line of sight. The more obstacles in-between them and the NVR, the more reduced the signal strength will be. Unfortunately, that is part of the wireless environment. We continue to provide innovative technology and a solid, durable protect that meets our customers needs. We thank you again for your feedback and for choosing Night Owl!

We have had home security cameras installed throughout our home for several years and recently decided to expand our system with the new Night Owl Wireless home surveillance system. Out of the box, the system including the 1 TB base and four cameras, were fairly simple to set up, install and sync; I was able to set it up with very little reliance on the directions. I eventually had to refer to the directions and realized it recommended syncing the cameras before mounting and installing them; I had to take one down that was a little further away in order for it to sync and then remount it. The system comes with an ethernet cable to hard line to your modem/router and a HDMI cable to plug into your television/monitor. After the cameras and base were all plugged in, it asked to create an account with Night Owl and the system automatically searched for the cameras and synced them and immediately displayed the very clear live video. I then downloaded the application on both of our smart phones and logged in using the account I created and it soon recognized my system. I was able to view all four live videos through both the phone app and the Night Owl base plugged into our television using the provided HDMI cable. You can sync up to 10 cameras with this system and view all images at once or one at a time. The base will automatically record any time it senses motion or sound and save it to the 1 TB hard drive. One of the main selling points for us was the 1 TB storage space as all our other systems we have had were cloud based and required a monthly subscription. The local internal storage sounded like a good idea to get rid of the monthly payment option however we soon realized that this may actually be more of a concern to some buyers. For example, if your power ever went out it would render the whole system obsolete unless you have a battery back up installed to the system base and a power supply to all cameras. Our other security camera system has rechargeable batteries and is cloud based so even if the power goes out, it will still be functional, record video and send notifications assuming you still have an internet connection. PROS: Great video, easy to set up and install, no need to replace or recharge batteries, local storage, not cloud based, no paid subscription required CONS: Although it is called “wireless”, you still need a wired power supply for the system and cameras to work, not much light from the built in security light, no option to send pictures with push notifications, no option to adjust the sensitivity of both audio and video for notifications, no option to block out certain areas of the video for notifications (such as a waving flag or wind blowing a tree branch), no option to not have the light come on during daylight hours or if you decide to install them indoors, the provided power cables for the cameras are only about 10’ however you can purchase extension cables separately, you will need a power source near every camera you install, and the two-way audio on the cameras sound very robotic. Hopefully Night Owl can add more features with a future software update however there are many more options on the market for security cameras that provide the same video quality with many more customizable options to suit your needs.

The Night owl video surveillance system consists of a DVR with wireless networking capability that integrates well with the remote cameras. Night owl build mature, professional grade surveillance systems widely used at home and business. Set up was a breeze using their app, I also mirrored the setup process by connecting the DVR unit via HDMI to my TV. The wireless cameras synced pretty well on first try as long as they were fairly close to the main wireless AP/DVR. Having a dedicated AP/DVR separates the video traffic from you wireless network. The cameras are "always on" and produce crystal clear video. The mobile application works well, with an intuitive interface including a timeline view, the functionality of the application is mature and interacts with the network DVR well. So much for the superlatives, the system even though it is wireless from a networking perspective, the cameras still require a power source. The rectangular AC Adaptor does not appear to be weatherproof and will not fit in a weather sheltered outdoor AC outlet. The cameras are weatherproof, but requires some work to mount. After setup, ensure that the cameras continue to connect at your final mounting location, since the cameras should be permanently installed. Pros: • Easy setup • Clear video • Mature platform • Nice mobile app • HDMI output from networked DVR • mouse control attached to networked DVR Cons: • Requires power source (wired) for each camera • AC adapters could be better shaped to fit weatherized outdoor receptacles. • Cameras don't look particularly durable.

Thank you for the feedback Bappy. We appreciate the time you took to write this and your level of detail. It appears that your only concern is that each camera must be connected to a power source and that the power adapter does not fit your outdoor outlet cover. This is an AC Powered Wi-Fi system, which is how it is marketed. The cameras are not battery powered and must be connected to an outlet using the provided adapter. This has many advantages over battery powered product, including not having to change or recharge your batteries or worry about them dying on you when you are not home. We are sorry the adapter did not fit well with your specific outlet covers and understand that can be frustrating. Again, we thank you for the review and for choosing Night Owl!

Home security is a must for me and my family. I wasn’t too sure about using the doorbell camera systems as anyone would be too close to our door for it to be activated. I was intrigued with the Night Owl system, happy to see that it came with 4 cameras with 1080P quality, and best of all being wireless. It was very easy to install and since it is wireless, no cables to mess with. After a few weeks with it I am really impressed with the image quality and detail that it picks up. Pros: -Installation: Again, the wireless aspect of the Night Owl is one of the biggest advantages. No cables to get in the way or run around the house perimeter. You need to make sure that there is an AC power source nearby where you want to set up the cameras, otherwise that will be the only hard part with the installation process. The unit is very easy to program and the instructions and informations that came with it were very self-explanatory. It took me almost the entire day time to set it up due to the hot weather, but was pretty easy. -Operations: The cameras are great, very easy to adjust. The images are crisp and clear especially at night. I used my TV in our dining room area because I didn’t have a dedicated monitor yet. I ordered one online and set it up the video-corder unit was easy and simple. If you understand computers and smart phone tech, then you should have no problem, especially if you use Google Assistant which adds to your smart home system. Also, make sure that it is close to your internet router to avoid using long internet cables. -Image Quality: Again, this is where the Night Owl is at it’s best. The night time image captures are crisp and clear and you can make out what you are viewing pretty well. I feel safe knowing that I can see who is out there and observe my property. Each camera comes with a spot light that is pretty bright and assists the lens to get that great crisp real-time quality. -2 way audio: each camera has the ability to hear and speak through as an intercom system. I’ve used it on my smart phone and the audio pick up was good, not the greatest, but was discernible. -1TB storage. I was afraid that you would need to subscribe to a cloud system for a monthly plan. None of that. All of your images and video are recorded onto the accompanying hard drive where you have 1 TB. This was such a greasy addition. Cons: -None really. Overall, this is an amazing camera system. My family and I feel safe knowing that we have HD quality image capturing system around our home. The smart home aspect is so enjoyable and easy for all of us to use. I highly recommended this!

Home security cameras without any ongoing monthly fees or costs. This particular set of WiFi based smart security cameras are a great investment for me since I despise paying extra for cloud based services and added monthly charges for subscriptions. In the box you get 4 WiFi cameras that need to be plugged into a wall outlet, 1 Hard Disk Drive for a home base unit, and accessories to screw your camera to the wall/ceiling. The setting up of this system can feel a bit cumbersome and complicated since it isn't simply app based. You'll need to use the provided HDD base unit as your main hub. This HDD unit gets plugged into your router and therefore creates that secure network to communicate directly with your camera units and not slow down your WiFi network. You'll also need the app on your phone, and in my case it worked well on my iPhone XR. The cameras need to be synced and activated to the home CCTV and then can be placed around your home as you choose. The setup software screen feels a bit simple and not user friendly, but be patient with the process and you'll have the cameras running quickly. The customer service line is US based and that's a big plus to know that you're supporting a US company. I like the ability of these cameras to detect human detection, motion on the camera, ability to have 2 way audio, and also for the spotlight feature. Once you're up and running the HDD can be hooked up to your TV via HDMI cable and you can see all the cameras running in real time. The app allows for the same thing. I can pull up the app when I'm away from home and get a snapshot of all 4 cameras running at once. I can then select a single camera to see what is happening on the designated camera in real time. You can also look over the event history to see what the camera picked up on various notifications. The spotlight can be toggled on/off in case you don't want to have it going off on every movement the cameras catch. The night vision of the cameras is also pretty good and picks up good quality. Overall the security camera system is great with it's solid WiFi connection, multiple cameras, and no monthly fees. I hope that as this product continues to develop, the user interface on the HDD and the app becomes more user friendly to set up out of the box. Once it's up and running you are good to go. PRO: No recurring monthly / annual fees 4 cameras included with the ability to add more as needed Good clear quality picture for day and night CON: Initial software used during the setup process is cumbersome

Thank you for the feedback and for choosing Night Owl! As you noted, all of the recordings are stored on the Wi-Fi NVRs pre-installed hard disk drive. This secure storage method allows us to provide a security system that is free of burdensome monthly fees. The NVR has built-in Wi-Fi to communicate with the Wi-Fi IP cameras. It will only need to be connected to your router for remote viewing on a Smart Device. We do have some customers who do not wish to network their device. As such, the NVR can be connected directly to their TV/monitor using HDMI cable and the system can function as a CCTV solution with no networking. Also, as you mentioned, this system can hold up to 10 total devices. If comes with 4 cameras but you can add on to expand your coverage should you need more. Thank you again for the great feedback. We appreciate you!

The cameras give a good quality image. I did not have any problems with the WiFi range as other reviewers mentioned. Also, the night vision is good too. However, the sound is extremely poor. If you try to speak to someone through the camera and microphone there is about a 3 second delay and then you get into a situation where there is an echo feedback. So when you try to talk to someone, the microphone picks up what you said and sends it back over the system. You end up with echoes of echoes. Eventually you just give up. Forget about two way communication with this system unless they fix it. To fix this, all they would have to do is turn off the camera's microphone when the speaker is putting out sound. The motion detection needs a lot of work. For example, I can walk in front of the camera. Eventually it will turn on and record. But the recording stops after 40 seconds even if I am still moving around in front of the camera. Its as if they have a timer that turns off the camera 40 seconds after it detects motion, even if the person is still there moving around. The software playback is buggy, especially if you have more than 4 cameras. I have 8. I found it very difficult to access and playback video from cameras 5-8. Sometimes it would play back at normal speed and sometimes it would be 4X or 8X. I had no control of it. Right after I first bought this system I had problems with getting it to work with my cellphone. I called tech support and they had me go through a very convoluted series of steps to get it working. I think tech support spent about 35 minutes with me. I give tech support for answering my call and getting me through the cell access problem. If they could only fix the sound, motion detection, and playback issues this would be a good system. But right now its a work-in-progress.

I want to get mad at it when it keep losing connection. Unplug it, reset it, but it only works for a while, sometimes a few days and then the connection is lost again, while the wifi still works normally. I bought 4 other sets that use wire and they are perfect. Never lose connection. And this wireless one is extremely, extremely bad. I planned not to review this product but the connection loss persisted so I wanted to let everyone know. The only plus point is the clear image and sound.

Need to add sound alerts to push notifications

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I currently bought the NightOwl 4 camera with DVR and set up was easy. Camera has great quality. The App required for smartphone needs the sound or chime for alert to be added. It only sends you a silent push notification to your phone without a chime or text alert sound that you received the notification. So only way you know your camera detects motion is by always checking your phone for the banner notification. This defeats the purpose of a security camera if it doesnt alert you properly. Even though the app setting on your phone has sound option and its on but you never get the sound alert. So someone could be breaking in your home or stealing things from the outside of your home during the night and you would never know it cause the push notifications doesnt have sound to chime your phone. So this is the main issue with this system. App needs updating to provide sound and this would be a easy 4-5 star system.

Though it has a few good qualities, I found the Night Owl system lacked the main things I was looking for in the first place. Not saying it’s bad, but just depends on what your expectations are with it. Firstly, the installation was WAY more complicated than I would have preferred — I almost would have hired a professional to just do it. Then, as the instructions said, I downloaded and tried to the link the Night Owl app, which was a headache as many reviews shared, the app is very frustrating and when calling customer service, it was a long wait and not very helpful. A few headaches later, we halfway resolved the app issue and got the system up. Then the cameras — I’ll just say, I would suggest an extender of the wifi antenna to make the experience better with this product because the cameras need to be super close to the homebase unit, which doesn’t work well for me when my wifi router (where the system is plugged into) is located upstairs in my home. This limitation is not communicated in the manual. Nonetheless, here are my pros and cons: PROS GREAT image quality and in color Great audio; can hear sounds very well Two way communication to talk to who’s outside CONS Outdoor cameras are FOREVER losing the signal So I found out from another customer that I will need to buy separate extension antennas since my home base unit is so far from my outdoor cameras.I personally feel I shouldn’t have to spend another dime for the system to be up and running fully. After calling customer service found out that we can’t see motion clips till 24 hours after (this totally defeats the purpose of being able to see motion in real time, which is what I wanted) The app is a nightmare and really puts a damper on the quality of the system because its functionality really depends on the app; and customer service just says “an update is coming” to fix the app. All in all, if you have a small home where all the cameras are within a very close distance to the home base, and you download the app, and it actually works, then you may enjoy the system. This was not my experience though, so I would pass on the system if given an option to purchase again.

Good afternoon and thank you for reaching out. This system has a 300 ft. wireless range which is clearly communicated in the marketing material and in the support material. Each camera can be up to 300 ft. from the Wi-Fi NVR with line of sight. If there are obstacles in between the cameras and Wi-Fi NVR, then the signal strength will be reduced. Some obstacles, such as concrete walls or brick walls, more heavily impact the signal strength than do others, like drywall. For customers who need help bypassing an obstacle that is impeding the signal strength, we do sell a Wi-Fi Extender Antenna on our sales site that will help. Unfortunately, wireless systems do have range limitations. The motion recordings should not take 24 hours to be available for viewing (either on a TV or monitor or via the App on your Smart Device). Please, at your convenience, email [email protected]. Please provide your best contact information and a brief description of issues you are experiencing (you can copy this review for this purpose). One of our advanced agents will quickly follow up with you and work to help correct the problems you are having. We look forward to hearing from you and being able to help. Thank you.

Cameras work great. Easy to install. Make sure you follow the directions. Cameras need to be plugged in near the receiver to pair them all together at the very beginning then can be unplugged and put where you want. Audio and voice work good to talk through the cameras. The app is easy to use on your phone.

Video quality is really good easy to set up and speakers work great even at a distance there isn’t a lag in video so it’s great especially with opportunities to record actions that involve faces motion or pixel change.
