Night Owl Wired NVR system w POE

The system I selected is what Night Owl tags as the wired network video recorder [NVR] system. Packed very nicely when it arrived, it was a really straight-forward process to get everything laid out and ready to spend a few hours getting it all in place and configured. Speaking of configuration, on my Android-based phone, the NO app does not play nicely on the signup screens such that I could not submit my email address etc. during account setup so I used the NVR with mouse and monitor attached. That went fine and was incentive to get familiar with the built-in app. Once connected to your network router, you can access the recorder from wherever you have an internet connection. The wired part of it is in the need to run ethernet cable to each camera location to supply power [POE] and a connection back to the recorder. This provides a great video image; the cameras are solid, compact and, when you have the locations picked out, easy to mount. The downside to this system [and the wired DVR system] is the need to lay out some cable runs. Supplied with the kit are 60' runs of CAT 5e; 100'-120' runs would be a much better fit. Night Owl provides a good range of options when it come to how you configure the system, You can choose between continual recording or motion-activated recording, audio levels, light levels for the built-in LED lamps in the cameras and so on. I think, in the end, a wireless battery-powered networked system would be the best option in my environment. NO offers that as well, they have a broad range of package configurations that shoudlk ift most any homeowner's needs.

Night owl NVR wired 2 way voice surveillance cameras, is replacing my previous wired cameras so I did get lucky on that part the wire fit perfectly through the existing holes that had to be drilled into the house just added some new weather proof sealant to fill the gap & so no water leaks into the walls. My house is small so I didn’t have to worry about the length of the wires that are provided HDMI & Ethernet. I did down load the app & connected the DVR to a computer monitor we have, it’s not necessary to connect to a tv or monitor we just prefer that option also so no need to look at our phones when someone is approaching. The two way audio is pretty clear we were impressed. The night vision is in color & is pretty decent picture, I’m not sure if the smart detection lights work with knowing the difference between a car & human unless it was picking up the person in the car cause the lights seem to go of often my neighbor said she liked the lights being that out street is very dark it lights up the side walk I front of our house. It comes with google asst. & Bluetooth to use for video streaming to your tv which is cool. You do need to download the app I order to set up features it also comes with a siren which we did not activate don’t want to make my neighbors mad with the noise haha. Forgot to mention you need to download the instructions which was confusing & irritating cause it’s for a couple different models. I kinda figured some stuff out myself. The app is glitchy I’ve had to uninstall & reinstall a few times since set up which I’m disappointed about especially when we had to leave town it kept freezing or really grainy. On my monitor it was clear both day & night, i like that it also does a still frame picture capture when someone approaches the house when detection is activated. It’s a good quality surveillance system if you don’t need anything super high tech, app was easy set up & easy to navigate, good pictures, 2TB DVR, bright lights. Just be prepared to drill holes for the wiring unless you figure out a way not to have to.

I've had this system installed for a little over a week now and can attest to just about every other PRO/CON listed. You are going to get exceptional night vision performance and pretty good day time results. The biggest headache comes from the app and user interface, which seems to be the norm when it comes to home security systems that are on the DIY side of things. So that part, while an annoyance, wasn't really out of left field as far as expectations are concerned. I have another system from a few years ago (a different manufacturer) that has almost the exact same PRO/CON relative to it's age (stellar night performance - for when it came out) but the app and interface make using it a headache. While the Night Owl *is* better, those things are still not what most are accustomed to when it comes to interacting with an interface and utilizing an app to control something. With that out of the way, you are provided with enough out of the box to get up and running in short order. Aside from picking hard-to-get-at spots to install your cameras, you can easily have all six up and running and tested in under two hours. If you wanted to really bullet-proof your install, I would recommend grabbing some bits and a drill, some sealant, and just in-case longer screws so that you can really secure the bases down firmly and then seal everything up so no water/moisture gets behind where you mount them. Sure, I'd like to remove two stars for the app/interface shortcomings, but at the end of the day the system still is an improvement over those that were similarly priced ~2-3 years ago, so I'll take that as a silver lining. I wouldn't say the system is an easy recommendation, but if you are in the market for night surveillance, it is amazing at that task and will definitely serve its purpose.

Purchased this unit, tested the cameras and made sure the all had a good picture. Once we had 4 installed i started trying to play back video to discover it was not recording. Reached out to customer support and started troubleshooting the unit. After an hour of unpluggin, replugging, restetting and trying every step they could come up with, we were told it had a bad hard drive and would need to mailed in for a warranty. Not a good start to a brand new system so we removed all the cameras we installed and returned it.

These cameras were pretty easy to setup. The most difficult part was the running wires to each camera. The difficulty depends on each person's situation. I wanted to hide the cables and ran them in the attic and had the camera hanging from the soffit of the exterior of the home. The quality of the cameras are fantastic. The app is easy to use. The night vision is great and depends heavily on the positioning of the camera. You can ruin the quality of the image pretty easily in night mode if you place the camera in a spot that a lot of the IR light can bounce back. The only real complaint that I have about the cameras, which you were likely aware of if you are looking at these is that they use a BNC cable for power and data transmission and not a POE setup with an NVR. This complaint is minimal, but keep in mind that if you have a POE setup, this could add complexity and if you have a BNC or nothing at all, it doesn't really impact you. I would encourage anyone wanting hight quality cameras to get these!!!

    A Great Wired Security system

This is a great system with a caveat, This Night Owl equipment is meant to be DIY installed. Which means with wires you’ll have to plan out cable runs for the cameras which in some cases could take a considerable amount of time. Having used both wireless and direct connect I would say the video quality is much better with the direct connect without interference issues. There are numerous videos to help along the way. The company offers 24/7 phone assistance in case you need help along the way. It’s a self-monitored system, and video footage can be stored locally on a MicroSD card or a hard drive, so you don’t have to pay a monthly subscription fee. When viewing with the Phone App, both apple and android use seems spotty, sometimes working great other times freezing and which would indicate a glitch in the software. The App could use some help. The Hardware itself is great! I would recommend this product for it’s clarity and operation. Direct connect works unless the power goes out then it doesn’t matter. You’ll always have a clear recording. What could frustrate some is the app consistency which needs addressed by the company. Remember the app is only for remote viewing, you can always view directly on a cheap 1080p monitor that you provide.

    Horrible Software, Unreliable Hardware

Unreliable and cheap hardware. Poorly designed and lightly featured software. We've had multiple NVRs and the software for this was by far the worst, but much worse than the software was the fact that our brand new unit couldn't remain online more than an hour without rebooting itself. We filed a warranty claim on day two, but they wouldn't have a new one to us until outside the return period - so based on the software experience, we decided not to take the chance, and returned it. Went with a brand we had before and are happy with the choice to return this.

We do not agree with your assessment of either the hardware or software, as both have an abundance of features while balancing ease of use. But we respect your right to have that opinion. The Security Camera Whisperer Recommends

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My family has begun to refer to me as the Security Camera Whisperer because I have tried numerous security camera systems over the years. I seem to always be offered them & take them as I love this technology since I am able to be sure that my family is safe. As the protector of the family & our domain I take that job very seriously, it isn’t something that I will leave to chance, or leave to an inferior product. It is why I so eagerly accept & testing these systems. I have had wired, (so-called) wireless & totally wireless battery operated security camera systems over the years. While I dislike having to replace the batteries every few days, the ease of install of a totally wireless system will never be lost on me…nor will it on anyone installing a wired system. Alas, I accepted this willingly and I installed this wired system no problem so that is something you will have to do as well if you want this system. Now they offer this 8 camera 1-way audio system or they have a 6 camera 2-way audio system. So if you are looking at this or the other Night Owl, that is the main difference. Since these were all installed outside our home I didn’t have a need for the 2-way audio system and happily accepted the 1-way audio. Being able to set this NVR/DVR on top of a ompetitors NVR/DVR, not have it hooked up to the monitor or the mouse that the competitor was is super cool as it leaves an HDMI port open on our TV, sweet! It may not sound like much but with multiple systems competitions for limited HDMI ports it can be a pain having to either purchase an HDMI switch or play the cable swapping game. So being able to set the system up over Bluetooth was nice! The image quality is of course 4K and is super crisp and clear during the day time. Also, even the nighttime image, which is usually where a competitor isn’t as clear but still nice, the Night Owl still looks super crisp at our home under the light conditions that we have. I am super impressed with the image quality of the cameras. We have had a few times is my being alerted to something that wasn’t a human setting off a camera but that is because of how sensitive I have everything set on all of the systems. I don’t see that as a negative, quite the opposite, I believe a system too quiet gives a false level of security. From install, to set up, to every day usage, the Night Owl 4K system is super easy, downright awesome & best of all American made. It wasn’t until recently where I experienced a data breach due to the haphazard implementation of security by a hardware vendor that I was slapped in the face with I could do everything right and that vendor could have made a mistake which allows everyone access to our files or security system. So every new device is put through the wringer in our home now. I can happily say this system does not phone the images home. They stayed right in our home during my testing. Don’t just take my word for it though. When you get the system set up your traffic intercepting and check for yourself, it’s the only way I had peace of mind. Give the a Night Owl a try, you won’t be disappointed!
