Great for portrait photography and awesome if you have a baby or toddler to photograph indoors. Fast capture with little to no blurs when they're moving around

Great starter lens

It let's in more light than the cheaper ones they trlhrow in with SLRs, and the fixed focal length really gets you used to composing your shots better rather than relying on the zoom capability.
