Since I am not a photographer, I tried to do as much research as possible, in order to surprise him with a new lens that he was going to love! I highly recommend it for lenses in this price range. He loves it so much and it is now his favorite lens of his collection.

Great Lens

For a beginner, it helps me to be out there and practice taking pictures to better understand the use of manual picture taking. Now with this lens, I will have to venture into using my flash; otherwise, it is still dark. The next step is taking me into using my light-room cloud.to justify the beauty of the picture I just took. If you are serious in learning, this lens will push you to understand photography. My DSLR AF lens truly spoiled me. If you want to go beyond point and shoot mode this lens will motivate you, if you wish to learn.

Must-have lens for every skill level.

Some plastic in this one but it hasn't let me down. I pack this and a medium zoom for travel and I can get most indoor or outdoor shots without hauling around a bunch of glass.

This is a great portrait lens!

I added close up lenses to it and got great macro shots of flowers, insects and did a few trick shots that had people wondering how I'd gotten the effect. This might be a good lens to include in the Nikon packages rather than two zooms.
