Customers are saying

Customers frequently mention the exceptional image quality and impressive zoom capabilities of the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens. Many also praise its ease of use and effective vibration reduction. However, some users note that the lens is somewhat heavy and its performance can be affected in low-light conditions. A few also mention that the price point may be a consideration for some buyers.

    Great Lens

This lens performs as advertised. As a relative newcomer to DSLR photography, I was concerned that using this lens would be intimidating and difficult. Not at all. I have had great results photographing birds in flight - the "Normal" tracking mode is easy to use. I have yet to try the lens out in "Active" mode. The lens is heavy, but the quality and results make up for the weight.

Works great and is just barely fast enough for sports in low light if you use a tripod or mono-pod. Great shots during the day, great zoom for the price.

I got this lens as i love to take pictures of nature so i bring this to every camping. This is perfect telephoto lens, it may be heavy but its reasonable because it is a telephoto lens.

The best consumer-grade zoom lens out there!

This is by far the best CONSUMER-GRADE zoom lens on the market. You will not find a better value than this one right here. The lens is a little slow, but the quality, clarity, VR, and overall value make up for it. If you were to get a better zoom than this, you're looking to spend $2k or more.

Inexpensive telephoto for DX and FX

This lens gets you out to 300 mm in a package that won't break the bank, with VR II to boot. From 70-200 mm it competes with the 70-200 options in sharpness, then weaker out towards 300 mm, but it does get you to 300 mm. Compared to the 55-300 for DX, the image stabilization is noticeably better, the focus is much faster, and you can just grab the ring to over-ride focus. Plus, it uses a more common filter size for Nikon, and will work on AF film and FX SLRs as well. All for not very much more money.

I love how easy it is to switch lenses and using the telephoto zoom lens, I can capture wildlife without spooking them. It has been fun using this new lens.

    Ok for beginners

I am a professional photographer and do landscapes only. I tried this lens a couple of months ago. It is useless above 200mm. This is a beginner level lens for those who don't want to know better or can't afford better equipment. I only bought it because I sold my 70-200 f4, which I regret, and will rectify soon. This lens was returned.

    Nice long lens

I took over 100 photos at a graduation ceremony from 60+ yards away. The VR(vibration reduction) is great. This lens is almost at the monopod, tripod size but hand-held shots are still clear. Even with cropping, pictures still have great detail. The lens creeps after you take a shot and lower it to hang from the strap. The camera will have to refocus again when you bring it back up and shoot something at the same distance. This might cause you to miss a spur of the moment shot.

Wanted to buy the 70-200 but was way out of my budget. This turned out to be a pretty deal. Only downside is it focuses real bad in low light. Luckily i dont shoot much on lowlight. If you're looking for a semi-pro lens go for this. If you want good sports photography and stuff go for 70-200mm

I used it recently to take photos at homecoming, and they turned out just great! It is a great addition to the lens kit that came with the d40x. Only downside is you can not purchase a warranty for accidental damage like you can on the camera from best buy.

    THIS LENS IS A MISTAKE

People who buy lens like this especially for an APS-C camera which includes all of the DSLR cameras short of the really expensive ones like the Nikon D700 or Nikon D3 with full size detectors the size of 35 mm film (24x36 mm) or comparable cameras from the Canon line, starting at $3,000 body only street price, considerably less on the street, are IMO sadly misinformed and really missing the boat. IMO one should buy for cameras in this class Nikon D90 (APS-C) should buy something like the Nikon 18-200 with VR or something like the Tamron 18-200, Tamron 18-250 or the Tamron 18-270, the 18-270 being the only one with VR. First of all a 70-300 lens like this suffers from a narrow field of view even on camera with a full size detector like the D700 and much much worse on something like the Nikon D90. Just look at the 35 mm equivalent focal lengths of 105-450 mm and the near focal distance of 4.9 feet, on an APS-C camera. Wide angle is worth much more than long telephoto any day of the week. With something like the lens I have mentioned above starting at 18 mm focal length, one has a near focus distance of about 18 inches and still has the ability to reach out in zoom. An 18 mm focus lens on the D90 gives a nice 75 degree field of view which is invaluable for shooting things including people in close. Sure one can buy an 18-55 lens to complement this lens but the real truth that one winds up using only the lens that is on the camera at the time and typically only one all day long. I have lots of lens sitting on the shelf and the only one I ever use on my Nikon D700 is the Tamron 28-300 and occasionally a 20-35 lens when I want something like a 90% field of view. I have a 75-300 which I have not used for a very long time. For my Nikon D200 which is my backup I used a Tamron 28-300 without VR which I happened to have around but bought the Tamron 18-200 when it became available for the wider field of view and the near focus of 18 inches in comparison to the 32 inches on the older Tamron 28-300. I want to make clear that the newer Tamron 28-300 lenses focus at 18 inches. For a camera with a full size detector like the D700 I would recommend the Tamron 28-300 with VR, about $600 street. Using a lens like this 70-300 and then bragging on it marks one as somebody sadly misinformed.

Great lens and good reach at a reasonable price

This lens provides good reach (zoom) at a reasonable price. I have only used it outdoors in bright sunlight so far with good results. The focus is of reasonable speed but it does "hunt" every now and then before eventually getting there.
