Useless camera
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this April 1st. It’s now may 18th. The camera has malfunctioned 4 times leaving it non functional. It fixes itself after a few days and malfunctions again. Reset, playback and menu are non functional. I am now past the 18 day period to return it. I’ve been dealing with Nikon customer service. They have been very nice but I now have to send my month old camera in for repairs. They believe it is internal electronics that are bad. Camera is too fancy, too much to go wrong

Terrible picture quality for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This seemed like a good starter set so I bought it with the intent to photograph birds on my proprety and at city parks. After receiving it I saw that the lenses are very low quality. Many pictures, even those not taken in direct sunlight, suffered from chromatic aberration to the point many birds I photographed had glowing blue and purple wings. Even those in shadow on my deck inexplicably glowed to the point I could either spend hours re-touching countless pictures in Photoshop or just be left with a poor quality picture. My $120 Canon point and shoot from 2015 takes better pictures in this regard because it does not produce this color fringing. I also had a lot of difficulty getting the auto-focus to work correctly. There are a multitde of tracking options but it seemed regardless of what I chose the camera had difficulty recognizing the bird from the background scenery and the bird ended up out of focus. Most pictures came out blurry to varying degrees, to the point where even a duck sitting still in the middle of the pond was fuzzy. Not all this can be blamed on the auto-focus but also speaks to the low quality of the lenses. Lastly, this is a full DSLR with a ton of menu options and configurations. The instructions are less than helpful because they only tell you a feature exists, not how to use it or what exactly it can even do in some cases. I had to end up watching videos and tutorials online but still found it very complicated to get the right balance of shutter speed, aperature, ISO, and metering system to produce a decent quality image. This camera can in theory shoot at 1/8000th of a second, which for birds sounds amazing, but upon trying it all my pictures came out almost entirely black. To compensate you have to crank the ISO to absurd levels and that introduces too much grain and noise for the picture to be usable. Even at 1/2500th speed the quality takes a hit as other factors need to be changed to let enough light in. Instead of going fully manual you can set one factor and let the camera auto calibrate the others for best results, but even with that most were too dark or too light because it mis-judged them and gave me an unusable image. Considering I mainly bought it to take pictures of birds which are very active and do not remain sitting still on a branch for more than a few seconds I don't have time to be fumbling with the settings and reconfiguring the values until I get the right combination. Auto-focus and other adjustments need to work immediately and that was the biggest failing of this camera aside from the horrid color fringing issues, which admittedly I think are mainly the fault of the lens. I used the 70-300mm one which I believe retails for $400 alone. I'm honestly surprised for that price the quality was so bad. What I'm saying is this is NOT a beginner friendly DSLR and the picture quality from these bundled kit lenses was not greatly better than my previously mentioned point and shoot, and in many cases worse. If you have a kid that puts this on their Christmas list think twice about it, because even though the camera itself is probably decent, it's going to be severely held back by these included lenses. You're better off buying the camera alone and spending much, much more money on better quality lenses, but at what cost? I only got this because it was a bargain on sale at $999 but was not even worth that price. Best Buy forced me to pay $150 just to return it, which I find absurd since I had returned another bad camera to them in 2015 for free (also Nikon btw). I feel scammed but paid just to be done with the aggravations this camera brought me and losing $150 is better than wasting $1000 on something I'll never want to use again. Very upset Best Buy changed their camera return policy and will doubtful be buying from them again since I lost a lot of money buying this product.
