I never knew the joy of making coffee until now. Like other users intended for a machine like this, many spend (too much money) at a local Starbucks. However, I am cheap, and I only drank instant coffee. It was easy to make – all I had to do was to boil a pot of water on my electric kettle – and that was it. Using a smaller regular coffee machine was time-consuming and bothersome. Furthermore, probably the most important fact was that if I only wanted to drink one, or two cups, it wasn't easy to get a consistent result because I didn't know the arts of making coffee. (A friend who worked at Starbucks used that word.) Basically he said I didn't know the amount of coffee grounds I had to use to make consistent results. I have been using this machine for about a week and like others; I am happy with it. Although it is mostly made of plastic, for home use I think it will last for a long time. This is not a heavy duty machine that can be used at a coffee shop or at a restaurant. (And I realize they do not make it for one.) It does take a couple of minutes to get a small cup and that's another reason it is not fast enough for such a place. But for someone who lives alone or a family, it is perfectly fine. The little dial can be set to select the size of your cup or even the provided glass carafe (which is appropriate for a small office, but I have not used it other than testing it for this review.) One major attraction of this coffee maker is that it eliminates the need to buy expensive coffee pods. These are the little Keurig® or other brands. Even to generic ones from places like Costco. You could empty your bank account quickly by using those on a regular basis. I remembered being at the market and looking at the Starbucks brand; they were a dollar each. While that may seem to be "cheaper" than what one pays for at the actual store, it still is like throwing money away. I am becoming more environmentally friendly, and those plastic pods aren't exactly good for the landfill. (Yes I realize you can use a multi-use pod in a Keurig machine, but it's only for one cup at a time.) This Ninja coffee maker eliminates that and you can make different sizes as you need. Others have talked about pro and cons of the machine – while I think the milk frother is a good idea, it doesn't warm the milk but it works well enough for me to turn regular whole milk into frosted milk for my coffee. The "over ice" option I felt it was odd. If I had to add any sugar or Splenda to my coffee, I think it would be easier if it were warm, instead of cold. Ninja recommends ice cubes. Other types of ice could not stand the heated water and it may overflow the cup from turning into water. The settings of "classic", "rich", "over ice", and "specialty concentrated" aren't gimmicks. I think it mainly varies the amount of water (and perhaps the temperature but I could not tell because I don't have a thermometer to test it) that is used to brew a cup. Adjusting to "rich" setting uses less water hence it is more concentrated. The "specialty concentrated" is defaulted to four ounces of quite concentrated coffee. You can do really fancy things by adding other ingredients to it. (The manual comes with a few interesting recipes.) Since I have only been using my own coffee mug with this machine, I noticed that the side of the machine gets splashed from the drips. I wish it were not so but I don't see how anyone could have designed the machine so it would not happen. I think it is a trade-off between a faster cup of coffee versus slower drips which makes less mess. The solution is that I just wipe it from time to time. The machine has a cup platform that is folded down and it elevates the cup to be closer to the drip.) Still doesn't totally eliminate the splashes. I also try to use my own paper filter which I had left over from my little coffee maker. After the machine beeps to signal that the coffee is done, it still continues to drips for a few seconds. When the cup is taken away, it will drip down to the heating element so I put a little tower there to absorb it and to measure the amount of coffee drips for this testing purpose. I don't think a bit of coffee on the heating element will ruin the machine but this is something you want to know. I never remember to click the "drip stop" which shut it down when I remove the cup (it is there for a purpose which is pretty unique among any coffee machines I have used or encounter since I expected it to be automatic but then that only works with the carafe made for it - I am referring to other brands of coffee maker.) With the permanent filter, it doesn't drip after it's done. The delay brew works like most after the initial clock is set you can dial in the time you wanted to start working you can choose the size of your coffee and the style of the brew and after a few seconds beeps to let you know that it is set. If the drip stop is set to on, the little light will warn you, too. The water reservoir is easy to deal with. It comes right off you can take it to the sink to fill it up or what ever of the water you use, or you simply open the lid on the top and fill it with water. The cleaning function takes according to the manual about one hour to run. I have not had to use it yet. This machine is not for used to make tea. I suppose any coffee machine is not made for tea because it is virtually impossible to wash the coffee oil/flavor off of the holder and it would ruin the taste of your tea. Ninja makes another model that could do that but it is more expensive than this one. The machine stays on after you make a cup and if you forget to turn it off, it turns itself off in about one hour. If you use the supplied carafe, it will turn on the heated element to keep it warm. I think it stays on for two hours but can be adjusted to last longer (who wants to drink 2 hour-old coffee?) If you're planning to buy this for your office, make sure the quick start guide is available. I don't think I could figure out how to use it without one. (The link is below.) To sum it up – the nice thing about this machine are the consistency of the coffee it makes. It has the spoon that is attached to the left side of the machine that is clearly labeled (of how much coffee, i.e. how many scoops, you ought to use for the size of the coffee you are planning to make.) And of course the machine eliminates the needs to use the environmentally unfriendly pods to make your favorite coffee for yourself or for the family whether it be one cup or up to half or whole (supplied) carafe. This part I really like. No more instant coffee for me! A friend at work has this machine at her house when she noted that I was looking at the manual during my break. She loves it, too, and she said she no longer goes to Starbucks. I agree with her. Here is the manual if you're interested (quick start guilde) https://www.ninjakitchen.com/include/pdf/qsg-cm401.pdf

Great Machine. This coffee maker is very versatile. The frothier works very well even on skim milk. This unit is replacing three coffee machines that I have eliminated and works as well or better than the three it replaces.

I’ve been looking for a replacement for my current coffeemaker that still gives me the same choices for making single cups of coffee but cheaper and just as fast as my other caffeine machine. On the plus, with just a turn of a dial, push of a button, and a few more scoops, you have a carafe full of hot goodness. Pros: There’s a lot of things I like about this coffee maker. The option to make different cup sizes is probably my favorite. I don’t know the exact sizes of all of my cups, so I had to practice finding the correct setting for my cup size. The drip saver feature on this helps a lot with this because if you’ve made too much you can always activate the drip saver and swap cups out without spilling a drop. I usually make the carafe on the weekends and will fill a large coffee cup 3 times using it. Secondly, as silly as this sounds, it’s the scoop and milk frother. It’s mostly how each is nestled stealthily into the design and is there when you need it and blends into the design when you don’t. The scoop has two sides with two different sizes. Small images are etched into the plastic which shows the suggested scoops for the size settings on the coffee maker. The frother is easily attached and removed and after using it, I just rinsed it under the faucet and re attached it. Finally and most importantly, how does the coffee turn out? Well, pretty darn good. I USUALLY drink coffee black. I’m almost always in a hurry and tend to drink a single cup before I have to get ready for work. I started off on the high end of the spectrum for the suggested scoop amounts for the cup size. I found the low end of the spectrum is much tastier. Single cups of coffee are made in just a couple of minutes, a few more minutes for the carafe. My wife brewed over ice and she typically prefers cold brew and rarely regular coffee, but found the over ice to be “pretty good”. Cons: Not really any cons. If I had one complaint it would be that the specialty setting doesn’t seem to do anything different other than make a smaller amount. I did use it to try and make a mocha, but I am no barista. I’m pretty sure, with a skilled hand and a solid recipe will be making delicious drinks in no time. Other Thoughts: Overall, I really like this coffee maker. I have best of both worlds with a single cup brewer, that can go the extra mile for a carafe. The drip stop is used way more than I thought I would, and the design is elegant but functional, which is the way design should be.

I'm a coffee connoisseur, I've been ordering Coffee from Boca Java and getting specialty coffees from Starbucks for years (whole bean). I've been using a Cuisinart craftless (Coffee on demand) brewer for nearly 20 yrs (on 4th unit), Always been happy with quality brew and that it keeps coffee away from air and hot for hours. Upon unpacking the Ninja I was impress with quality of the unit, it looks very nice and does not take up and unreasonable amount of counter space, just slightly larger than my Cuisinart, with so many more functions. So the Ninja says you should 2 run water through it twice before use (this takes just over 4 min per pot, make sure to completely fill (but not overfill reservoir) otherwise it will tell you you need to "Add Wtr". Learned something about the unit already. Now with that done I found the smart scoop a large and small size, probably 1tbsp and 2tbsp. The Ninja craft is 50oz my Cuisinart makes 60oz (10 vs 12 cups), I generally use about 6-8tbsp in my Cuisinart for 12 cups (~2.5 oz) so I use one less tbsp in the Ninja vs the Cuisinart. The Ninja has 2 brew strengths (Classic and Rich + Over Ice), I decided to start with Classic, and off we went. Both units finished within 5 minutes. The brewed temperature of the Ninja was clearly hotter than the Cuisinart. My instant read thermometer had the Ninja at 194 degrees and the Cuisinart coffee at 185. I let both sit a couple of minutes, as I don't drink my coffee that hot. The comparison... The Ninja was slightly bitter compared to the Cuisinart coffee, I'd say from brewing too hot. It was acceptable, I've had worse, but my first impression didn't impress. I looked through the manual to see if there was any way to change the brew temperature, and it said it was all automatic to yield the perfect brew. I did note there was a means to calibrate it for high altitudes (where water boils at a lower temperature (I'm in Phoenix at about 1600ft, I'd not expect much difference, but worth a try) - press and hold the Classic and Over Ice Button at the same time and the timer will say CAL. Much to my suprise it stopped after about 1 minute, probably only 12 oz of water used. So I repeated my test (after offering my wife and daughter coffee from both test brews - and there was a consensus the Ninja was slightly bitter, but maybe fuller also.) I brewed another Ninja pot it's initial temp was 191 degrees, so the calibration did do something. I let is cool a bit and it was improved, not as bitter, very close to the Cuisinart taste (which is good). Now to try single (large 12oz) cup, I used 2 rounded small scoops (probably close to 2 total), I filled the reservoir full, but selected the XL cup size. The brewing started, paused and then resumed, finishing in under 2min. The temperature was 190 at the end of the brew. IT was more full bodied than the full pot, far more coffee flavor, more like the black coffee I get from Starbucks. So this it did very well, in fact excellent, very similar to the single serve k-cup machines. I can see my wife liking this for her Caramel Latte. My biggest hope was for great Iced Coffee, about all I drink in the summer. I filled the carafe with ice, which seemed strange, but that's what it said to do, put the about 7 small scoops of coffee in, and hit the "Over Ice" button. It again started brewing, but paused longer, as I think the brew temp was lowered then more slowly it entered the pot of ice. It looked very quite dark, and after 10min it was not done, maybe just over 1/2 done. It finished after about 15m. the served ice coffee was cold, but much of the ice was gone. I added more ice to a vente cut and poured my brewed Iced Coffee over it, added a little cream. And not bad but not starbucks, just on the thin side, lacking the rich coffee taste; it was ok. it might save me some afternoon trips to SB, but might not stop me from going in the morning. I tried making a single travel mug with with 5 small scoops, not much difference, still a tad thin. I wish I could instruct the machine to let it brew longer, or use a slightly higher temp, not exactly sure but it's too watery, not the richness I'd hoped for. This is a nice machine, it does a lot, mostly well. IMHO if it gave the user some more flexibility to better taylor the brew temp/time/strength for all beverages if might be more successful. But many might see this as making it too complicated (my wife would). So it does a good job for coffee and brewed beverages. It's not quite got Ice Coffee nailed yet. I've now tried adding an ounce of cooled specialty coffee to the ice coffee, and that does the trick, I now brew a cup of specialty coffee, put it in the fridge when I make Iced Coffee, then add some to each cup of IC served, it's more work but it get me closer to a great cup of IC from my Ninja (my tip to you).

This is my second Ninja coffee system and I LOVE THEM!!! My first is a one cup and is perfect for me. However, when having guests over I need bigger!!! This system does it all. I made a full pot using 5 scoops and brewed it on RICH...(this would make hair grow on the bottom of me feet if served alone) and we ended up make 4 large lattes at once! The frother is great!!! Works flawlessly but make sure you RINSE IT IMMEDIATELY. The directions say 4-6 scoops for regular, but actually 4 is strong on the regular brew. One caution- I used the Drip Stop to pour myself a cup, and by the time I got the pot back, the filter area was full of water and loose grounds were about to drip. I solved that by waiting until it is done! I have yet to use the Iced function- sorry. The only problem with this is the price. While it appears nice and sturdy and I am sure with proper gentle use it will last, but most people I know use a simple $20 pot and would not spend this much on a coffee machine. But it does make a great gift!!!
