Let's be real, if you own a Nintendo Switch and want to play games like Mario Kart 8 or Splatoon 3 online with friends, this isn't really optional. You need a Switch Online membership. While I'm never a fan of paying extra to play games I already bought, I have to admit that Nintendo makes this a pretty great deal for the price. What's good about it? The main reason to get this is for the online multiplayer, and it works great. But the real value comes from the extras. The biggest one for me is the Cloud Saves. After hearing horror stories of people losing hundreds of hours of progress in Animal Crossing or Zelda when their Switch was lost or broken, having my save data backed up to the cloud gives me major peace of mind. The other huge bonus is the library of classic NES, SNES, and Game Boy games. It's awesome to be able to fire up Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, or Super Mario Bros. 3 anytime I want. It's a fantastic dose of nostalgia, and it's a great way to show my kids the games I grew up with. For about $20 a year, getting online play, cloud saves, AND this huge retro library feels like a steal compared to what Sony and Microsoft charge. What's not so good? The voice chat system is a joke. You have to use a separate app on your smartphone, and it's clumsy and inconvenient. Everyone I know just uses Discord instead. Also, some games, most notably Pokémon, don't support cloud saves, which kind of defeats the purpose for some players.

As much as I hate the PC/console divide, I do find that my gaming habits come down firmly on one side of it most of the time: I'm a "PC gamer", for the most part. As such, there's always going to be a part of me that chafes at the idea of paid online. Online play is just part of a game's included functionality to me, and I don't like the idea that I have to pay for an additional subscription in order to use an included feature. That said, for a service that I come to inherently disliking, I have to admit that Nintendo Online provides great functionality. The online is just as smooth as the year and a half in which it was free, and subscribing to the service, as well as downloading the included app, were easy to do. Speaking of the included app, it's where most of the value comes in my opinion. Nintendo Online comes with access to the Nintendo Entertainment System app for the Switch. This gives you access to a library of 20 classic NES games, from Super Mario Bros. to Legend of Zelda. While they're not all top-tier games, there's certainly enough hits to make it a great offering to someone like me, who grew up on the original Nintendo console. While we're on the subject of Nintendo Online apps, my earlier writing might have led you to believe that the missing star was from resentment over paying for online access. It's not. What caused me to knock the service down one star is the voice chat. Nintendo provides voice-chat for online play in their Nintendo Online package, but only through a smartphone app which must be downloaded and used separately. I can put my bias towards online play aside, but I just can't fathom a system that expects me to basically skype in to games in order to use voice chat. I would have preferred if they'd just left the functionality off the service entirely. If I want to use a phone-based app to kludge voice chat onto my games, then I can simply use Discord, Skype, or any number of other apps custom-made for the purpose. If you can't give us integrated voice chat on a console in 2018, then don't try to put a band-aid on the problem. Overall, great service marred by a couple of simple problems that, while frustrating, do not mar the service beyond repair. And assuming that you came for a review of the physical card, rather than the service it represents, I'd still give it a 4/5. Sturdy cardstock, solid, minimalist design, easy to scratch-off numbers, but it loses a star because I prefer the old plastic style gift cards that used to be commonplace in the 00s. Overall, probably won't get bent or torn in any gift-giving scenario, but feels like it should be sturdier for the money.

It's what you expect, a physical card with a code on the back for 1 year of Nintendo online. Never had an issue. I've given a few as Christmas gifts to friends and family, and the card is a lot better than trying to print out and wrap an email with a code. I don't understand why more stores don't carry these. Nintendo Online isn't really that great, but it's also not too expensive for a year either. It's fun playing games like Mario Kart online, but the entire switch online functionality feels like it's from 15 years ago and intentionally tries to avoid player to player communication. Furthermore, it's Save Cloud service excludes games that you spend the most time in, like Pokemon. They give you no other way to backup the save data. The GB, NES, and SNES apps that you receive with Nintendo Online are cool, but I would not recommend paying for Nintendo Online if those are all that you care about. They will stop working once the subscription expires and your game saves are stuck there. Note: After redeeming the code, you need to go into your account and turn off automatic renewals, every time that you redeem a code. Otherwise, the next year they will charge whatever payment method you have on file. I wonder how many people were surprised to see Nintendo auto-billing them a year later.

My son lives in another state with his mom. Getting this for him has allowed me the ability to play minecraft together during the times we can't be in the same household. The only issue is this is not for family use, so he has to play on his mom's account in order to play with me due to how things were activated. But still, makes skype calls more interactive for him. I can be on PC and he can be on switch. I dont know if his mom uses the other features this offers, like free monthly games and such, but I get to play with my son in a house that we built... until he covers it in lava because I "didnt make it out of diamond." Great purchase for our case and I'd do it again.

Finally! Nintendo released their online service after a year and a half. Was it worth the wait? Overall, I have been happy with the service, especially for the price. Even so, I think Nintendo could still add more content to this package. The main features I'll discuss a little further are online access and the NES games. Online Access This membership allows you to play games online with others. Up to this point, doing so has been free. Understandably, Nintendo charges for such a service, as long as it works well. So far, playing games online with the service has worked great! I've spent some time playing Rocket League with others, and I have no complaints about how online games work. NES Games The membership also includes 20 old Nintendo (NES) games. Many of these games are games that I grew up playing, so it has been a lot of fun to play. My wife and I enjoy playing the puzzle game Dr. Mario together, and I've introduced her to the old Mario games. Other feature games are The Legend of Zelda, Tecmo Bowl, and Excite Bike. Paying $20 for a year membership, I believe that this is a great deal to get to play these games again. However, with Nintendo's HUGE library of games, I think they've missed an opportunity to add a ton more games and maybe charge a little bit more. I would be happy to pay maybe $35 for 100+ games from NES, SNES, and N64. Hopefully, they will add more games in the future. Overall, I'm happy with this great service. However, I believe Nintendo could do even more with this. If you played the NES back in the day and/or you like to play with friends online, this $20 membership is definitely worth the money!
