Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the exploration, planets, open world, and universe size in No Man’s Sky, frequently citing the vastness and enjoyment of exploring the game's many planets and universe. However, many find the gameplay repetitive and lacking in content, with some also criticizing the game's story and value for the price. The sheer scale of the game's universe is a major draw for many players, but this is often offset by concerns about repetitive gameplay mechanics.

    Great Potential, Missed Marks

Let's be real, there was NO way this game was going to live up to the hype train that surrounded it. No Man's Sky is an absolutely beautiful and technically impressive game... that doesn't offer much beyond that. The core gameplay loop will consist of.. Go to planet, mine resources to upgrade some stuff and refuel so that you can go to the next planet and mine resources to upgrade some stuff and refuel so that you can go to the next planet. The fun is in the variety of the planets and scenery. It's simultaneously awesome, and boring as hey. The devs have stated they will be adding to the game with updates, but there's just so much that is missing that they promised prior to release. All in all, despite the flaws, despite the weird mixed signals from the devs, despite everything... No Man's Sky is fun, it's not the game to end all games it was hyped up to be, but it's not bad. It's way more fun to play than it is to watch, so I can't really recommend watching it on Twitch or Youtube to make up your mind. If chill games like Minecraft and such are something you enjoy, you'll likely enjoy No Man's Sky.

    Okay for what it is

A lot of people are disappointed by this game - much due to the pre-game hype. However, looking at it for what it is: it is an exploring game of a gigantic open-world sandbox to play in. An entire universe to be exact. Much of what you will see has never been discovered by your species - there are other aliens you will encounter. There are tales and languages to discover along with the fauna, flora and planets. There is some terrain that is not very friendly and barren and others areas that are lush and beautiful. You have a suit, multi-tool and ship to care for and upgrade to help you on your exploration. There are 3 paths: go your own way being completely free and open, the atlas path and the path directly to the center (the "ultimate goal"). You choose your way, you go at your own speed. Very little to no direction to follow BUT if you are looking for something that is mostly relaxing and very chill this could be your game.

    Exploration heavy, action lite

I saw a little about this game before deciding to buy, most of what I saw focused on the exploration of the universe. It looked like something different from most other games available, and it is. This game tasks you with discovering new planets, new species, new elements, and some aliens. Yes there is some shooting, but mostly it is about wandering around new planets, each one is a little different, some are very different, one world could be a barren, radiation soaked rock with very little on it and the next could be a "waterworld" type planet where places above water are few and far between. This appealed to me because I wanted to do something new, not just fight mindless enemies, I always want to see what the world in each game was really like, not just seeing it whiz by going from checkpoint to checkpoint before a timer runs out. This game fills that explorative niche I really wanted have filled. It's not a lot of action, and mining materials will get repetitive, but the journey and taking my time exploring is rewarding to me.

Amazing game, if you know what is to be expected.

This game has been getting many mixed reviews. Either people have loved it or hated it. It's definitely one of the most anticipated games of the year and it's clear to see that it hasn't lived up to the hype. If you were expecting a complex multiplayer game, where you could explore the universe with friends, fighting space pirates and forming alliances, the game will sorely disappoint you. However, if you play the game knowing what it was actually intended to be, you will enjoy it. It's a solitary experience that's focused more on exploration and discovery. The game doesn't hold your hand and many things you are left on your own to figure out. So if you were planning on exploring the galaxy with friends, stay well away from this game. However, if you want to explore a vast universe on your own, this is the game for you.

    Survival first exploration second

I picked the game up yesterday evening and played it for 5 hours straight. I'm impressed with the visuals and the survival aspect of the game. You constantly have to monitor your exosuit, starship and multitool. I don't mind mining for rare items thats needed to keep those things functioning properly. I learned the hard way to keep important materials stocked when confronted by two space pirates in a dogfight my shields depleted and I ran out of zinc to restore them. Of course I died but my ship had good enough weapons for me to win the fight. I'm anxious to run into them again. I love the thrill of never knowing when I'm going to be attacked after leaving a planet. My first dogfight with one pirate went well and I managed to get the kill. I've also managed to take down several sentinels. It's clear that this game isn't for everyone but it fits me. I can see how it can get repetitive as you go along but I'm enjoying it now. Besides the game was only $50 with my Best buy gamers club membership. Overall I'm very impress with what a small team of developers accomplished with No Man's Sky. Looking forward to the dlc..

First i just want to say if you're reading this then it's probably already too late...don't get caught up in all the hoopla and negative reviews on this game. It's very unique and unlike anything i've ever played. What you can do from an exploration standpoint is not rivaled by any other game out there. There isn't much combat in this one though so do not buy if that's what you are looking for. If you're looking for something that's different and want to immerse yourself in exploration than this is the one for you.

Great or Terrible Depending on the Gamer

The world generation is amazing. Being able to "seamlessly" travel through the galaxy is very neat. Graphics are above average, great when you consider they are all procedurally generated. No story to speak of. It can become repetitive. However, if you just like a casual exploration sim, its pretty neat. Hoping future updates that have promised base building and other updates will improve to make the game more full featured.

Space . . . The (Almost) Infinite Frontier

Summary: Few games have the honor of being as highly anticipated as No Man’s Sky. What was promised was nothing short of revolutionary. The scope of the game was almost unfathomable. The sheer amount of freedom and discovery gamers looked forward to with this release is nothing short of the uncontrollable excitement a child experiences the night before Christmas. Does it deliver on all the promises? Yes and no is the best answer to that question. Graphics: The visuals are delightful and mostly on par with what you would expect from this title, technically speaking. I felt that detail could be a little higher when being very close to things such as plants and terrain. The art style is fairly unique and the palette fits well. Most colors are slightly ‘washed’, or have a pastel feel to them, adding to the unique sci-fi feel. There is a familiarity in some plants and creatures from planet to planet, but that is to be expected to some extent when considering the scope of the game. Sound: The sound effects work well and are thought out. The technology sounds are appropriate and add to the ambience. The dynamic creature noises are interesting and even amusing at times. There’s not a lot of background noises, but what is there increases the realism. The sound track is nothing less than stellar and an absolute pleasure to experience in the game. I thought it would have been neat on the PS4 to have the system feedback announcements come through the controller speaker. Gameplay: This is where gamers choose sides. I’ve seen a lot of negative feedback on the game, both from gameplay and technical issues. In a time when MOBAs and high action shooters seem to reign supreme, I was looking forward to a slower-pace exploration game. The gameplay can get monotonous for some due to the constant necessity to mine materials to charge your life support and other critical tools and systems. You fly to a new planet, start scavenging materials, possibly find monoliths and other cool discoveries that increase your knowledge of certain alien races, go to another planet and repeat. A player can take extra time to interact with the alien species, trade, and upgrade their equipment, which I find satisfying. I enjoy taking my time experiencing the different planet’s characteristics, making discoveries, often renaming them, and then uploading them from the world to see. As for the technical issues, the game has crashed twice on my PS4 (which I’d not yet experienced a crash on my PS4 yet), and I’ve experience no issues on my PC. The framerate stutters a bit as the game is loading but after a few minutes the framerate seems solid and smooth. Final Thoughts: I think the game is a huge success and I love playing it. I love how small it makes you feel when accessing the galaxy map and how I can take as much time as I want exploring as long as I keep my critical equipment charged. I love discovering upgrades for my multi tool and finding really strange creatures. I also love not being forced into explosive combat situations all the time. Not everyone will love the game as I can see how some would find it tedious and monotonous, but I, for one, am very pro-No Man’s Sky. I love it and keep an eye out – you just might find one of the many planets I’ve discovered!

I was super pumped for this game that I bought it yesterday morning. I played it for 10 hours and it started out great, did a ton of exploring on my first planet, got situated, learned what I needed to so I could get off my home planet (they need a better tutorial to explain the interface more and how to actually make Carite Sheets) Anywho..After the first few planets the grind become noticeable and the micromanaging of my inventory got more annoying and bogged down the overall experience, the Outposts/mini missions got tiring as they all essentially look/feel the same. The planets, colors and life on each planet is varied and different each time but man, there are some similarities which I started to notice overtime. How certain Pineapple trees seemed to pop up on each planet, seemed kinda weird. I love the colors, the environments I just hated the micromanagement of everything else, especially on Toxic/Winter/Blazing Heat planets. It just sucks the fun out of the game for me. Not sure if I'll be getting back to the game, kinda glad I have a physical copy so I can trade it in at some point. Overall this is just another lesson of how hype can literally destroy a game for me. What a waste... :(

    Potential

This game had a lot of potential. Unfortunately with an extremely short and narrow story line with very little detail, left the game lacking. Gtav took one city on one planet and made an unbelievable game that is far beyond comparison. The quintillion planets on this game is nothing but a bragging right, u will b lucky to explore 10-30 of these before losing 100% interest in the game. There is nothing to customize in this game and every aspect of the game is very repetitive. I was quite dissappointed as the trailers and game play was very decieving when it came to in depth fluid gaming experience. Hopefully Mass Effect: Andromeda will fill the quintillion planet void that No Mans Sky has left. Which could be done in 1 hour of Mass Effect III gameplay.

initial response to the game was, wow, this is fun. It was neat, the concept was more than appealing, as time went on the appeal began to fade. I love this type of game, low stress games that keep you going for hours on end. In this game though, it almost becomes to tedious, I feel like the space in your inventory should be larger even after I spent time expanding it to the max. Certain items just wouldn't stack enough. I'm hoping that patches keep coming and improve the game even more seeing as I didn't trade it in soon enough, after like 2 weeks the game no longer held any value and then the dev's went into hibernation for a while. Haven't been back to visit the game since the last patch but I do hope to return to it again one day. For me it feels like the games I buy in early development on steam. I buy them to support them and don't play them until they release. Only with this game, it released...and is still waiting to be finished. Selecting not recommend to a friend until the game is fully fleshed out.

Not for everyone, but possibly my favorite release in the last 6 years. Pros: Soundtrack is amazing and adds to the atmosphere of the game Exploration is rewarding and fun No loading screens adds to immersion Cons: slow start, just rush your hyperdrive and you'll be golden lots of features in the works that will make this a 6/5 game that just aren't there yet Should you buy it? maybe. if you enjoy minecraft, EV Nova, the sci fi genre, space combat, and resource gathering/management, yes definitely. if you want a space shooter or simulator, definitely not.
