Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the exploration, planets, open world, and universe size in No Man’s Sky, frequently citing the vastness and enjoyment of exploring the game's many planets and universe. However, many find the gameplay repetitive and lacking in content, with some also criticizing the game's story and value for the price. The sheer scale of the game's universe is a major draw for many players, but this is often offset by concerns about repetitive gameplay mechanics.

No Man's Sky is an incredible achievement, but the gameplay may not be interesting enough to support it long term. It's definitely worth seeing for yourself though, especially if you value pure exploration and discovery.

First I would like to say that this game is one of its kind. The technology of a randomly created universe is very innovative. Nothing like this exist yet. Just imagine trailhead the galaxy planet to planet from star system to different galaxies. Now for the not so great...it gets repetitive and lots of crashes. This is where the game could have been improved. Hopefully there will be some updates that will fix the frequent bugs.

Not for everyone, but what I wanted

If you're into exploring, or "walking simulators," as some reviewers call them, this is pretty much the pinnacle of the genre for me. I like the isolation, the exploration, and the (at times) aimless wandering, with the occasional hyperspace jumps to land on different planets. Technically, the game looks nice. The sound and ambient soundtrack are very well done, while the graphics are pretty decent for a procedural game. Traveling through space, encountering traders and hostile ships, as well as some space/time anomalies is where this game shines. I never bought into the hype, but I could tell from early accounts, this was the game I wanted to play. If you're on the fence, watch some YouTube Let's Plays and see if this is for you.

The first couple of hours I played this game I had fun. After that, everything was extremely repetitive and there really wasn't much to do. There was a lot of things missing from this game that I had seen in previews and it's a shame that the developer decided to not include them, but still advertise with those missing things. This game really should be $20 and not the full 60.

If possible I would give this game 2.5 stars, but since I don't think it's worth a full 3 I'll lean more on the negative. No Man's Sky is a very beautiful game, even on the PS4. At launch however I would say this game was a complete scam. Even if you didn't know anything about what was promised to be in the game the PS4 launch was riddle with bugs and the game crashed all the time. Since then a lot of patches have came out and things have improved. The price has dropped as well to 39.99, and the up coming black Friday promises to lower it even further to 24.99. At that kind of reduced price point I would suggest any one interested in open ended space exploration might want to give it a shot. Like others have said it's sort of like minecraft in space, in that you go around randomly generated terrain in the forms of the planets you visit being akin to new biospheres and explore and gather resources. I think one the major things lacking for minecraft fans however is you really can't build anything to leave a lasting mark. You just upgrade yourself and your space ship. You can't build a cool base or anything like that with all the millions of resources you gather. Which long term is what hurts the game, the endless need to harvest common resources to power your shields and life support, refill your hyper drive etc.

    Beautiful, Serene, Calming

This is not a game in the typical sense, but in the same sense as 2001: A Space Odyssey is not a typical movie. And they have more in common than the focus on outer space. Both are experiential in their form rather than directional or dictated (although 2001 has more direction given that it is a film). This is not a game to play to behold a story as intended by some designer, but to craft and experience your own. I play and enjoy No Man's Sky for the same reason I like to sit in a garden, star gaze, or walk through the woods: it is soothing and without purpose other than existential contemplation. As opposed to other games (e.g. the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess) that have repetiton of story, such that the game entirely plays the same as it would with any other player or whether it's your first time or tenth time playing it, No Man's Sky is superficially repetitive (which is what is soothing about it). More importantly, no two players will have the exact same experience. That is beautiful to me.

Heard all the hype at E3 and when t came out I was like I have some cash to burn let me check it out. Looking back kinda waste of money but now I can fully tell friends to stay away. The graphics are top but the overall game play is subpar to what I expected. Most like destiny in UI and nature minus guns and enemies. May turn out to be like destiny where after a DLC release it'll be totally different. Otherwise stay away from the hype

    Find the Wonder

Right off the bat, this game is not for everybody. - If you like information drip-fed to you, it's not for you. - If you like to be guided through a structured narrative, it's not for you. - If you are only interested in shooting things, it's not for you. - If you are expecting a universe full of marauding multiplayer pirate clans, it's not for you. This game really has me thinking about how games have changed over the years - they are much more complex, but somehow less fun, and certainly less of a challenge. There's an element of wonder to this game that I hadn't even realized I was missing until now. With No Man's Sky, the narrative is pretty much up to you. There are certain tasks you need to learn, and pathways you can take (or not take), but overall it's more about the experience of exploring the great unknown. There is a peacefulness to this game that really appeals to me, and playing it for a few hours in the evening has an almost therapeutic quality. The musical score by 65 Days of Static is perfect for the "sci-fi book cover" aesthetic of the game. I have not experienced the bugs that others have, and I understand that these are being fixed in the next patch. In any event, to some the game may feel unfinished, but to me, I feel as though it's a starting point for something that will evolve over time, and I'm excited to see what it will become. As I said, it may not be for you, and that's fine. That's what the gaming community is about, a diversity of opinions, tastes, and experiences. But if you are looking for a little peace, give this a try.

    Needs some polish

Overall, despite it's shortcomings, I like the game. Many people are complaining about the lack of "multiplayer", as something that was promised, but this game was never marketed as a multiplayer game, so even though it's a bit disappointing, I never really expected to play this game "with" other people. Exploring planets can be enjoyable if you like the premise of what this game really is: a discovery game. Not all discoveries are amazing, many times you will find very similar creatures and planets and it can get repetitive. That is also what makes finding something new a bit more enjoyable. A good chuck of your time will be spent mining resources in order to keep your ship and suit systems fueled, and for money to upgrade. For me, this game is something I can play to relax without having to put much thought/effort into what I'm doing. Nothing is particularly challenging (with what I've been doing) so you can go about at a rather relaxed pace. Where I find the most fault in the game is the UX. The UI seems designed around motion controls and therefore doesn't translate the best onto controller (probably worse for mouse/kb) and things like crafting and upgrading your suit/ship/tool are a chore and not intuitive. Buying a new ship is weird, and since you don't "sell" your old ship it would make more sense if they worded it as a trade + or - cash so that it doesn't feel like you're buying a ship for, say 1million, and just losing the value of the ship you already had. Hopefully the developers will be adding updates continuously to the game through player feedback, because the game has promise, it just needs to iron out some kinks and missing features that would make quality of life better

Interesting concept game, not much else

First off, let me say No Man's Sky is a beautiful game. Some of the landscapes on different planets are breathtaking, and nothing quite can replace the awe inspired by travelling through space. That quickly wears thin, however, in this game, which is a difficult one to say the least. Difficult games are fine, as long as there is ample reward for the corresponding difficulty, and I find it difficult to be rewarded for this game. The developers are spot on when they call this a 'survival' game, but instead of the kind of awesome survival game like Last of Us (one of my favorites of all time), this game reduces the survival format to a monotonous closed loop of collect resources, charge your equipment, try not to die, travel to a new system, repeat. It's not enough to keep me interested.

    Don't Listen to the Hate

First off, I have been following this game since late 2014. Every demo, every interview, every screenshot was EXACTLY how the developers explained the game. Contrary to almost every negative review, Sean Murray never once said multiplayer was a part of this game. He said numerous times there would be no focus on multiplayer. If you bought this thinking there was multiplayer, thats on you and not the game's fault. That being said, this game is revolutionary. The shear expanse of the universe is unimaginable. Each planet with it's own environment, animals, plants, climate, etc. makes the journey exciting. The graphics aren't super detailed and thats ok. Now I will say that after about 16 hours of playing the game and visiting nearly 30 separate planets, many of the base characteristics are similar. You can tell that the game uses an algorithm to simply piece animals and plants together from pre-built modes and thanks OK. Mining for elements can get a little "grindy" but what game out now isn't to an extent? My hope is this sets the baseline for a great game legacy. Hello Games said they want this to be the starting point and to build on the platform for years to come. Could you imagine what this game will be like in 2 years? I knocked 1 star for 2 reasons. First is that for some reason, there are more bugs than I would have liked. The options menu crashes on me at least 1 time in a play and some mission checkpoints dont trigger so certain items dont get completed. Not the worst things to happen since the game isnt narrative driven, but it could be improved upon. Should you get this game? Yes. A new type of game from an indie publisher sets a new precedent for gaming.

Although this game was overhyped prior to release it has actually been one of the best I have played in a while. If you are interested in exploring beautiful galaxies never before seen and being recorded as the one who discovered them this is your chance. This is as close to true cosmic space travel as you can get! It also continues to improve with promised content patches which contain many of the features promised at E3 2014 coming soon.

If Best Buy would issue me a refund for this product that would be great cause by default The game is broken and crash's all the time and has never been fixed So, No mans sky was a great idea and I really wish I would have came through, yet this did not happen instead the Devs lied about the content and released a broken game. there is no multiplayer, not much single player content, recycled content, 0 player on player interaction Literally all you do is zoom through endless space seeing the same things over and over again and nothing changes Overall 0/5

No Man's Sky is a game of unlimited adventure, but yet one of little to do while adventuring. While the planets and animals all have some sort of variance, the buildings and monoliths all look the same no matter where in the universe you are. It just gets kind of old after a while. But It is worth playing.

I was super excited for this game. Constantly being pushed back made me just anticipate it more. Turns out I was kinda let down. I think it's a great concept, but it gets kind of repetitive; some of the worlds are pretty identical. I'm only giving it 3 because it's worth trying, but not worth 60 bucks.

Like many I was falling the hype that followed this game, however for the most part I feel like it succeeded in what it was trying to do. This is a survival and item collection game at heart, with a massive amount of exploration. Believe it or not there is a story and although shallow it is enjoyable. It's worth getting if you want to kill a few hundred hours very easily.

I sank almost 40 hours into this before reviewing. I'm an old school gamer with favorites in multiple genre's. This game could have been an all time great but it has one major flaw. No substance. It's completely rng with artificial game time inflation. Little story and highly repetitive. It is gorgeous, flying is fun, the ships are cool and the item customization albiet small is a good start. Had this game had a more intriguing storyline, aliens that were more diverse and actually did something and most of all a goal other than getting to the center of the universe. (laughable especially when you finally do). Hopefully they build on this foundation and make a better game later, but as released this was an overhyped slightly boring time sink.
