I broke my nexus6p (first time in years that ive broken my phone) so I needed a new unlocked phone. I was browsing and saw nokia and thought - man nokia made reliable and heavy duty phones when i was kid - so im going to give them a try. I just got it and it is pretty sweet especially at this price - holy moly feels and looks like a 500 dollar phone. Its all about what you need and what you want out of a phone - not about what other people think. I compared specs with other phones and this one ranked up top. I am a 29 year old dude who uses google maps, a good amount of apps, use it for music, and i dont game. I have only had it for a few hours but I felt like I needed to leave a review because WOW I was surprised! Ive had my share of expensive phones and all that - all I can say is NOKIA is coming in hot!! Give it a try and it may blow your mind. Thanks NOKIA for making a good phone at a fair price.

Excellent Mid Range. Nokia is Back!

The build and hardware is expected at this price range. This is not a power user smartphone, but it will do 95% of what a flagship phone will put out. It may not be a a super fast fluid experience as a flagship phone, but fast enough for daily use. The camera on this phone is decent and photo apps can certainly fix the problem. After all, its mostly refined software from other big companies that make their cameras stand out. Why pay $300 more, so you can download the same apps like everyone else. Overall, this is a solid phone for every day use. This is an AndriodOne(Pure OS) phone, so you will get the latest updates up to 2 years. No more waiting on bloated version like others(Samsung, LG)

    Almost perfect

Excellent build quality, functional dual-SIM features (3G on both slots), great screen, and up-to-date software. This is an Android One phone, so updates are guaranteed for two years and buyers can rest easy knowing their phone won't be orphaned on an old version of Android (looking at you, ZTE). The build quality exceeds that of flagship phones; you won't worry about fragile glass or dings and dents with this device. Performance, when everything goes according to plan, is pretty snappy as well. The screen has a slightly bluish tint to it, but it's far nicer than displays on comparably priced devices. The display is much, much nicer than similarly specced Moto phones, with the only real drawback being a comparatively low max brightness. There are only three drawbacks to this device - 1) Occasional performance hiccups, which may have something to do with the latest Android build downloading to the device before potential stability issues are worked out. 2) The camera is OK, and I'll leave it at that. 3) Call issues sometimes emerge, but they're not frequent in my experience. The first week I used the device I had some problems, but I haven't had any audio issues since. Taking those caveats into consideration, this device is strongly recommended, and a great buy at this price point.

    Great Midrange Phone

I used to use Google's Nexus phones exclusively because of the guarantee that I'd have the latest and greatest version of Android and the price point that was easy on my wallet. Once the Nexus line was retired for the more expensive Pixel line I became worried that there wouldn't be anything that checked both of those boxes for me. When the end of the road came into view for my Nexus 5X I started paying more attention to the new budget friendly phones coming out and the Nokia 6.1 is what caught my eye. This phone runs very well with stock Android. It ships with 8.0 in the box but should update to 8.1 within a couple of days if not during the initial setup. The launcher is no frills without much in the way of customization but that can easily be remedied with any of the wide selection of launchers on the Google Play Store with my personal preference being Nova Launcher. The camera leaves a bit to be desired, but I think that's more Nokia's camera app than the actual hardware so hopefully there will be improvements in that area with future updates as seems to happen with most other phones. The build is fantastic. This thing is built like a tank and I appreciate the extra weight. In all honesty, I'd be more worried about the floor getting damaged if I dropped this thing than I'd be about the phone itself. I would prefer the rear fingerprint sensor being a little bigger as it feels like I get a lot of partial fingerprint readings, but that's really a minor thing and I'm sure I'll get my muscle memory worked out in time. I'm not big into mobile gaming, but I do enjoy things like Pokemon Go and Fire Emblem Heroes. This phone runs Pokemon Go very smoothly even in AR mode. And speaking of AR, this phone was recently added to the list of phones compatible with ARCore, Google's answer to Apple's ARKit. Most of what's been done with the technology seems to be more experiments than anything, but there is a lot of potential and this phone will be able to take advantage of that when the time comes. Over all I have to say I'm very happy with my decision to pick up this phone and I feel it would be an easy recommendation to make to anyone looking for something in the $300 price range.

This has been my primary phone for the last 4 years and it has met my expectations. Good battery life, responsive screen, USB C charging are some of my favorite things. Camera is pretty decent too. You're getting your money's worth but my biggest complain would be the internal storage(or the lack of it). At 32GB, there's not much you can do with that and that puts a limitation on the apps you can install.

    Went back for another

After my used Nexus 5 went belly up I spent too much time looking for a replacement. I previously had a Nokia 650 Windows 10 phone which I really liked but it just did not have the app support for my home automation toys and surveillance camera. It is still currently being used by my daughter. I totally miss Windows 10 interface on a phone. Don’t like it on a PC but it was awesome on a phone. That is spilt milk and back to the replacement phone. We are not power phone, heavy multimedia, or game player users and not interested in spending a ton of money on a phone. That said there were some things I wanted in an Android phone after our initial Android experiences. Unlocked. We use Consumer Cellular as an ATT GSM carrier. Not a fan of contract phones at all. Stock Android. Timely updates. Gotta say I love Android One program so far. Solid physical build. I don't like protective covers Decent performance. Price including a one year accidental damage warranty. Again I don't like protective covers. The Nokia 6.1 caught my eye and I decided to give it a try and risk the restocking fee. It was a bit more than I wanted to spend but seemed to be a good price considering what it offered. Once I got through the setup and all the updates (importing settings from Google was pretty much a breeze) and getting use to Pie I have been very happy with the phone. The only annoyances have been with OS quirks. Which come and go with updates. It does have trouble with hidden SSID Wi-Fi networks out of the box and currently. Even with the allow hidden SSID checked. I just unhide the network connect and hide it again. This is most likely an Android OS issue. I am not a camera person and wish the camera would do a little better in idiot proof mode. I have been so satisfied with the phone I bought a second one to replace my wife’s much weaker outdated Blu phone. I would totally recommend this phone to average users. You may get annoyed with the OS on and off but will probably be pretty satisfied with the phone and its performance in general.

    Practical Review 3.5 STARS

I really wanted to like this phone. It has so much potential. Make sure to read all the way to the last section which shares strange issues that I have experienced with the phone. Possibly worth your time on a trial basis. BODY AND STYLE - 5 STARS The phone is one of the best built physical phones in the affordable Android unlocked phone market. I love the way it feels I my hand. Easy to grip. Solid and attractive. BATTERY LIFE - 3.5 STARS Being an Android One phone, it should get great battery life. I have only experienced average battery life out of this phone. Maybe it is my phone? I wouldn't know unless I tried another one. FUNCTIONALITY - 4 STARS Basic usage of the phone is good. It is pretty fast and does what you would want from the phone pretty well. Good external speaker and decent phone quality except when using an external 3.5mm headset. Explained in more detail below. CAMERA - 3.5 to 4 STARS I am not a professional and the camera satisfies my needs fine although other users weren't happy with theirs. OTHER FUNCTIONS - 2 STARS I have had some very strange things happen with this phone. After a couple of months, my phone rings but I can't answer the phone. When I use an external 3.5mm plug-in headset, the volume level is very low unless I turn off the 4G LTE functionality. The dual SIM functionality is not great. My settings as to which card is the default one to send text messages and MMS sometimes doesn't work right or changes. It caused me to accidently send a text to someone from the wrong number that I wanted to keep private because I didn't realize I needed to check if it was using the default SIM correctly. Another minor thing that is not a big deal is that the volume is loud when dialing numbers and turning down the ring volume or any other volume control doesn't lower it. I have to cover the speaker. Again, this phone has a lot of potential to be one of the best in the category for value and functionality. Maybe a hard reset might fix the issues and maybe not. Maybe it is just the one I bought? I wouldn't necessarily recommend or not recommend the phone to a friend. I would say to possibly try it out if you got it for a great price with the idea that you may be returning it within 14 days.

I have had this phone for about 2 weeks and I will be keeping it. Initially the camera performance was poor, with long lag times or the old freeze and crash routine. Luckily this phone is a part of the Android One program and with the May Security Patch, Nokia has fixed the camera performance (still a little poor low light performance) and the phone runs smooth overall as well. This phone will get timely updates and has stock android, decent camera, and surprisingly good battery life also, Nokia is back.

Gotta say I did a lot of research before purchasing to make sure it'd work and would be something worth my money and it definitely was. Have seen some people complain about the speakers(more than loud enough for a normal person) as well as the camera(more than good enough for the normal person). Phone is very responsive and quick have had it a few days now and very happy with it. Dont mind the nitpickers if you're a normal user this phone is build well and does everything it needs to do. Works very well on metropcs. Well worth the money you're paying for it.

Excellent product - Nokia is BACK!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My review is purely based on what we get for the money we paid. There is no point in comparing this to an iPhone or Galaxy. Excellent build quality. Pure android experience. Decent cameras. Very responsive and no lag while multi-tasking. You can add a micro sd card upto 128 GB in the 2nd sim card slot if 32Gb doesn't float your boat. Finger print sensor on the back is something you would need to get used to if you are moving from an iPhone. Screen quality is good and overall phone feels solid. Battery lasted an entire day with 25% reserve after heavy use (Music via Bluetooth, Whats app, Netflix, Youtube, Email, Texting and calls). A better set of headphones is something Nokia should consider improving to.

    Decent phone minus the camera

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This phone is not a bad low end phone if you can live with a few caveats. The performance isn't bad at all, it can even play games decently well. It has a Snapdragon 630 octa core and 3gb ram for the 32gb model. It runs Android One (Pie currently) so it has pure Android with no bloatware and gets guaranteed updates for at least 2 years since the initial launch which is amazing. The updates alone are what sold me on a Nokia. The only downside with this phone is the camera app, it is absolutely horrendous, I can't believe Nokia thought it was okay to leave the camera app the way it is on this phone. It takes terrible pictures, the camera hardware isn't the problem, it's the camera software Nokia is using on the 6.1 that's terrible. It has not improved with updates yet. The pictures are noisy, dark, poor color balance, just absolutely terrible. If you need a phone and don't care about the camera too much, or can live with mediocre photos, then you're okay with this phone. But don't get this phone if you are expecting amazing photos. Other than that it's a really decent phone. It has USB C quick charge 3.0 charging which is super fast. Screen is decent for not being an OLED, a little wide for my liking but it's manageable. Build quality also seems very good.

A Beautiful Android One Phone with Nagging Flaws

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I really wanted to love the Nokia 6.1. Because it's part of the Android One program that ensures timely OS and security updates and features a clean Google Android experience, it's basically like a midrange (much less expensive) version of the Google Pixel. It also ticked my other boxes: unlocked (not tied to a specific carrier), rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, NFC chip for Google Pay, nice full HD screen, reasonably fast processor, premium-looking high-quality build, etc. I knew the phone was bigger than I wanted (even bigger than my prior phone, a Nexus 5X) but phones keep getting bigger and there wasn't anything smaller that offered all the features this phone had, at least at anywhere near its price, so I bought it. Unfortunately, after more than a month of use, there are three flaws this phone has that keep me from being fully happy with it. First, it's just not comfortable to hold for any length of time due to its width and its boxy design with somewhat sharp metal edges. At 75.8 mm wide, it's only 3.2 mm wider than my old Nexus 5X but that's enough to make a difference in my hands (which are, I'd say, average size for a man). And though the precision-engineered metal chassis of this phone looks fabulous, it simply doesn't feel as good to hold as the curved soft-touch plastic of the old Nexus 5X. (I don't use phone cases, BTW.) Second, the fingerprint sensor on the back of the Nokia 6.1 is simply too small. It doesn't look THAT much smaller than the circular sensor on the back of the Nexus 5X but it's enough smaller that I CONSTANTLY get partial scans and have to try multiple times to hit the sensor just right in order to unlock the phone. Think how many times a day you unlock your phone. It should be really easy to do but, with this phone, it's a real hassle. I thought I would get better at this over time but I haven't. (I've read other reviewers complain about this too, so it's not just me.) A lot of times now, I just turn the phone over when I pick it up so that I can see the sensor on the back and aim for it with my finger and therefore unlock the phone on the first try. Also, the sensor is awkwardly positioned too low down on the phone. It's not where the tip of your index finger would normally rest when you pick up the phone. Poor design choices all the way around here. Grrrr. Lastly, the camera. OK, I knew going in, from multiple reviews I'd read, that the camera was universally known as the weak point of this phone. And yet I've still been disappointed with it. Shots in bright daylight look nice, although fine detail is still not quite as sharp as I'd like to see. But it's when light is anything other than ideal that things go wobbly. Indoor shots during the daytime look sub-par and slightly muddy, with more shadowy areas especially looking noisy. Forget about truly low-light evening/nighttime photos (which I knew about before buying). And even with HDR turned on, dynamic range is just so-so, even outdoors in the daytime. Plus, the camera app can be dodgy. I needed to quickly get a shot recently but repeatedly clicking the shutter button did nothing. I had to close the app and re-open it to get it to work. And then Nokia updated the camera app last week to add some features, etc. And now HDR doesn't work. If I take a photo with HDR turned on, it gets stuck forever "processing" the photo after taking it. I'm sure a future software update will fix this bug but this does NOT inspire confidence in Nokia. If the camera had merely been as good as the one in my old Nexus 5X -- a mid-range phone from 3 YEARS AGO! -- I would have been happy. But alas, the camera in the Nokia 6.1 is definitely a step down from it. Apart from those issues, though, the phone is quite good. Call quality is good. The phone has been stable and generally very fluid and responsive. However, I have seen some occasional laggy scrolling, usually just after waking the phone in the morning. Still though, nothing major. (But note that I haven't tried playing any graphically demanding games.) Nokia followed through with the September Android security update just a few days before the end of the month. (An upgrade to Android Pie is supposed to be coming later this fall.) As Nokia says, this phone is "built like a tank" so you don't have to use a case. It's sturdy but also feels heavy in your hand or pocket. Considering the cost of this phone, the Nokia 6.1 still offers a lot. Trade-offs are unavoidable in any phone costing less than $500. The question is whether or not the specific positives of a given phone outweigh the negatives vs. other phones you might consider. For about the same price, I'm pretty sure I'd be happier overall with the Moto G6. It feels much better in my hand (at 3.5 mm narrower, with a curved glass back), has a front-mounted fingerprint sensor, and (based on lots of head-to-head comparisons around the web) appears to have an overall better rear camera than the Nokia 6.1 -- better dynamic range and better performance in medium and low light. Plus it has a more attractive 18:9 shaped screen. No, the build/design doesn't look as distinctive or premium. No, it doesn't have NFC to support Google Pay. And no, it doesn't get the sort of updates that the Nokia gets as an Android One phone. (The Moto G6 tends to only get quarterly, not monthly, security updates. Motorola has confirmed that it will get an upgrade to Android 9.0 Pie but that could be next year while Nokia has said the 6.1 will get it this fall. Plus, the 6.1 will also get upgraded to Android 10 Q in 2019 while that's very unlikely for the Moto G6.) But having played with an unlocked Moto G6 at Best Buy, I can say it doesn't have the flaws that bug me about the Nokia 6.1, plus it feels equally fluid and fast, has lean nearly-stock Google Android, and also supports all 4 major US cellular networks and even Google's Project Fi. Meanwhile, the Nokia 6.1 only supports the T-Mobile and AT&T networks. The Nokia 6.1 is the best available option for some people but, in the end, it wasn't for me. I've decided to return it and get a Moto G6 instead.

I purchased the Nokia 6.1 through Best Buy. They price matched it from Amazon down to $179.99 without a contract. This phone is amazing for the price. I could have spent more for the 7.1 model, but the difference of the processors weren't major enough and I don't care for the extra fancy screen or dual camera. I got tired of buying flagship phones for $700 or so and having it last only 2 years. The design and quality of the phone is great for its price. Android One is awesome! This phone did not come with any bloatware apps like social media, etc. It even allowed me to delete apps I don't plan to use. It updated to Android 9 (Pie) OS as soon as I set the phone up. Only knock on Pie OS is that you can't delete the Google Search bar from your home screens. You can't wait how many items per row of column either, but can be adjusted by setting the size. I had the HTC 10 before this and compares to the OS, Android One of this phone is much better. No bloatware and you can delete apps you don't want! As for the hardware. It's not as responsive and a flagship, but using the less powerful app allows for battery life and the lag is not noticeable enough I'm upset. This phone has amazing battery life. I only charge it every other day. The speakers are only on the bottom when you play media and it sounds muffled. Finger print scanner is very responsive. Screen is very nice too. The camera is good too. I do not use social media or game or take lots of pictures. I use it for texting, phone calls, and use of certain apps. This phone is perfect for me. I am very happy wit this phone. My plan is to just buy a mid range Android One phone every two years for between $180-$300 since technology tends to be outdated within six months.

I will keep this short...this is a fantastic phone that does day to day the same as my work phone which is an S8. The low light photos are the only glaring difference but really good daylight photos are here. The usual day to day phone, browsing, apps, and such are zero difference to me from the S8. Great build quality and battery life. Just get it and you won't regret. Awesome phone for money.
