Look, the story isn't going to rock your socks off but if you're a newcomer to JRPGs or if you are a nostalgic gamer, this game will will eat up your time. I love it for its great and engaging combat and i love it for its massive quality of size. The stories of the 8 "main" characters ebb and flow in their own respective ways but they don't connect and that is where i see fault. My only wish of the game would be a better connection between the characters. Get it, buy it, see for yourself!

This is a decent RPG that harkens back to the golden era of SNES turn based RPGs. The story is great and the combat is unique but not necessarily groundbreaking. I did enjoy the job system to customize characters even though it had its limitations. My biggest complaint is paying a premium price for a game that uses simple retro graphics and style when it should be $30 tops.

if you miss old jrps like final fantasy ii and final fantasy iii you will love this turn based game. eight independent stories, some better than others, but all riveting once you progress into act 2 and act 3 of them. play them all, or just the ones you choose... the choice is up to you.

Some people don't like the fact that the 8 stories don't really intertwine. Why are these 8 people roaming around together? Get past that and it's a great RPG. Most of the individual stories are good, the battle system is great. I don't care for the traveling graphics (gets hard to see paths due to the lighting.) "Secret" paths to chests aren't needed. The items are usually useless as you have a bulk of the items, even from the chests that can only be unlocked by thieves.

There's genuinely nothing to recommend about this game except it's battle system, which might be the best in rpg history.
Other than that, this is a very poorly considered game. It's a game about 8 individuals who set out on *very dire and important* individual quests ... except none of those stories are interesting, and the characters themselves agree, because in the middle of those quests they join up with the other 7 individuals, for absolutely no reason. (I am not criticizing the reason the game gives you, it literally does not give you a reason.)
The pixel-art graphics have been lauded. They're pleasant, and effective at making you feel (at a glance) that you're in a retro game, but if you spend any time examining them you'll start to understand how poor the art direction is. E.g. the battle camera floats around, very slightly, which CONSTANTLY causes distortion in the pixel-art (which is at different scales for different on-screen characters). This is a game that basically sells itself on its pixel-art, and yet the game itself is completely disinterested in making the pixel-art look good. It uses modern gimmicks to distract you from how poorly synchronized all of it is.
The music has also been lauded. It's fine, but completely unmemorable and discordant with the retro vibe.
That's the best word to describe this game: discordant. It's a mess. It's also a kind of fun mess if you miss '90s-era rpgs and want to just grind.

Octopath Traveler is a Nintendo Switch exclusive that is an old school JRPG. Graphics look like something out of the early 90s but feels very current. The story is based off of 8 characters which sets a much different tone in the game. If you love old school jrpgs, get this game

A JRPG that goes back to its roots with a modern flair to it. It blends 16 bit sprites with a 2.5D overlay. The world is traversed like a 3D world, but retains the 2D terrain aesthetics. The game tells 8 stories for 8 different characters and if you approach it from that way, you'll have a good time. If you're hoping for one overarching plot then you might be slightly disappointed. Overall, if you like the looks and are a fan of old school RPGs then this buy is a no brainer.

I gave up early on in my first play through. I realized that the stories did not quite line up and I felt like I was playing different games with different characters; however, if you can give it enough time to get to Chapter 2 then the game becomes absolutely addicting.

I've always been a huge fan of the classic 2D final fantasy games and have been looking for a good one for a long time. This definitely scratches that itch and has awesome gameplay with a lot of adventuring to be had. Already put 30+ hours into it and barely scratched the surface.

This is not Final Fantasy 6. It is however an amazing game that takes most of the RPG of yesteryears and combine it here. The game is more akin to SaGa Frontire than anything else. If you have a love for the old JRPG, then this is a must. If your new, definetly check the demo.

I typically hate turn-based RPGs, but I absolutely love Octopath Traveler. The graphics are gorgeous, the combat is engaging and strategic, and the characters are interesting. I’ve only met 5 of the companions, and I look forward to meeting the other 3!

Octopath Traveler does a great job of creating a new feeling experience with an old genre. If you grew up playing RPGs on the SNES or even the Playstation era you'll find a lot to like here. Eight characters give you a ton of story and you get to play as them all regardless of who you start with.
Unlike many nostalgia fueled experiences Octopath Traveler actually tries and succeeds at bringing the genre forward. Things like fast travel are now present and the world feels like an "open world" game allowing you to pick and choose the areas you explore first. There are levels so some regions will be too dangerous to explore at first but nothing is stopping you from heading in any specific direction.
Lastly the art style is amazing and unique. With dreamlike qualities the graphics are a welcome throwback to the 16-bit and 32-bit RPGs of the 1990's. If any of this intrigues you I would say it's well worth the investment of time and money.

It basically feels like nostalgia in game form. It is old school story and graphics with just enough changed to make it worth your time. They did update with fast travel and some other things that alleviate old time problems. Can be grindy If you aren't prepared for that.

This game is incredibly deep, offering 8 unique characters and stories for you to go through. Completely this entire story will take time, but it is worth it. There is a reason this game is so critically acclaimed. I highly recommend this to those who love RPG titles

If you're a JRPG fan of any level and grew up w/ the golden age of JRPGs in the 16-bit era. This game is for you. Even if you're not, this game offers a ton to enjoy. The graphics; beautiful yet sometimes hard to distinguish between foreground and background, but a minor annoyance compared to how stunning the visual aesthetic of this game is. The gameplay has such a strong replay value based on the combat system & a fun and engaging dialogue. But all this only got me 10 hours in, collecting 4 out of 8 of the first character chapters before I just couldn't do it anymore. The repetitiveness with lack of story depth drained the care out of me. I just wasn't emotionally vested in the story and I attribute that largely to the fact that the story never feels to intertwine. These characters are all forging their path in parallel. I'm certain this is something that can be helped with a DLC, but until that happens, I'm not sure if I'll be picking this game back up anytime soon. I truly have no desire to find out if these characters make their goals :(
This game provided me roughly 10 hours of fun on the switch, your mileage may vary depending on how much the other factors of this game trump the lack of story depth. I wouldn't recommend to a friend at full price, or until some DLC comes about with a more interconnected story arch.

This game is the perfect modern update to the classic RPGs of old. I have trouble putting it down once I start playing. Unique characters and stories. Great part is you can go about getting them however you want to. Lots of grinding to do to get your levels up, but fun.
