The Most Beautiful JRPG I've Played In Years

To say this game blew away my expectations is an understatement, but I feel there are many reviews that haven't quite done the game justice, mainly because it's clear the reviewer hadn't finished the game. Without any spoilers, I can GUARANTEE that the eight stories are connected, but without going through an optional post-game dungeon, you would never find out. In my opinion, the only thing I do not like is how the true ending is tucked away in this manner, but that's where my dislikes end. The first thing that really grabbed me, and I'm sure brought plenty of attention to the game itself, are it's visuals. The game looks beautiful when the switch is out of the dock, but the full effect of the dynamic lighting and amazing effects really shines when the game is on the big screen. There were moments where I would have to stand still and take in the scenery because some parts of the world were just that breathtaking. There were even times I opted to not just run for my next destination like I would in any other rpg, instead taking the time to let the music and atmosphere really sink in. Speaking of which, the music is phenomenal. I didn't expect much in that regard, if I'm going to be honest. I expected some generic orchestrated parts, but they really only reserve such pieces for gigantic battles, and even those are composed in a way that makes such confrontations feel that much bigger. The character themes perfectly represent each character's personality (my favorite being Olberic's), and the music for standard battles is pretty catchy. I will say that the normal battle music can get repetitive, but just as you go into more dangerous areas, you get better variants, and in my opinion, the second and third battle tracks are much better than the first. As far as battles are concerned, I love the combat system. Smart, intuitive, but not too difficult to get the grasp of. This game was developed by the same team that made Bravely Default, which means a few aspects got carried over, namely the job system. You reach a point where you can unlock secondary jobs (classes) for each character, adding extra depth to combat. The key to success is making a well-balanced team that can cover every aspect of battle, and sometimes overcoming an obstacle might require you to change your team layout for the sake of utilizing a new strategy (sometimes the only thing better than one healer is two healers). And just so you're aware, there's almost always something tucked away on the side while you're on your way to different towns. Exploring these secret locations may give you something nice... And finally, the stories. These all range from serious to light-hearted, and even the most milk-toast of stories have some sort of twist at the end that really bumps the suspense up. Obviously nobody is going to love all eight stories, but they all do have their own moments and have decent payoff, but tye main purpose of these eight stories only draw together the protagonists for the true ending, which for some odd reason is completely optional. Ultimately, all stories ARE tied together, and I find it upsetting that so many people will say otherwise, though I can hardly blame them. As stated before, I'm not a fan of the true ending being a secret, but it's certainly there if you're willing to find it. As far as a game thats focused on its eight protagonists, there's no interaction between them other than travel banter, which is again, totally optional and dependant on your team. Even then, the banter is either loosely related to the current predicament in the story, or its strictly friendly conversation. I found it a bit upsetting at first, bit after going through so many of them, it became clear that these moments helped build up the characters without relying on the story to do so. All in all, I still appreciated the interactions, though I still wished that they interacted on a higher level through the main stories. Phew...that took a while. I'm never one to write reviews, but overall the game was such a joy that I had to share my thoughts. I'm also one to never buy the 'special edition' of any game, but I keep kicking myself for not having done so for this title. The stories may not be to everybodys liking, snd some people may not find the characters all that interesting, but I believe you can only get the best experience for this game in every aspect by seeing it through to the end. As a complete package, the game is amazing, and has quickly earned a spot among one of my favorite switch games, and I'm already looking forward to a second playthrough. If you decide to pick up the game, I hope you enjoy it! May the Flame guide you!
