I got this for portable gaming. And while it does just that, it’s too heavy and bulky to be more than a portable desktop.

Didn't even bother finishing the windows 10 setup. Fan noise was unbearable, typing experience was bad, touchpad experience was worse, and there was HORRIBLE backlight bleed. It was visible even with bright colors on the screen. Don't waste your money on this bad product with even worse QC.

    A beast of a laptop!!!

I absolutely love the new HP Omen 17" laptop. Let me preface this review by saying I have exclusively used Apple computers for the last 5-6 years. I used to be really well versed in Windows and have built my own computers before. With that being said i think HP hit a homerun with their OMEN 17" laptop. It is a solid, well crafted laptop with small intricate details that the company has obviously taken great care in building. The HP Omen is a beast. It has the new 7th generation core I7 processor and 12 gb of DDR ram. It hums along with anything you throw at it. I did a benchmark test and this computer finished in the top 20 of all models tested straight out the box! It boasts a 4k resolution screen. I've played many rounds of overwatch using an xbox one controller and it is buttery smooth. Really impressed by the graphical difference between PC and Console gaming. I knew there was a difference, but seeing it yourself on a gaming laptop really lets its shine. I really enjoy all the USB ports and the HDMI. The speakers are really well done as well and the backlit keyboard is really handy. I like that the keyboard is spaced correctly and its full size. Sometimes with laptops I feel like the keyboard is scrunched and it makes it awkward to type. Also really enjoy all the presets and buttons you can customize on the side of the keyboard. Nice tough. The battery life is good on the laptop as well. The only Con I could say would have to be the weight. It is heavy for a laptop. But that's because there is a lot under the hood, Full size graphics card and a lot of power. And all of that stays relatively cool the entire time I've used it. All in all I highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a high performance gaming laptop or someone who really likes the old Alienware line and wants something similiar. HP obviously took a lot of time and effort perfecting this laptop, and I think in a crowded market it stands out. Well done.

Don't waste your money! The Keyboard is clunky and works only when it wants to. The computer acts like it is always tax for resources and is super slow. I have a 12 year old laptop that runs circles around this laptop. When I tried to have it fixed the day after I bought it Best Buy says it is an HP problem, HP says its a Windows problem, Windows says it's an OEM problem. I cant get the unit fixed. I would have returned it but I needed a computer immediately and could not be without. There is many more issues but these are the big ones. I have found out that many others have had this issue and the only fix is to get a new hard drive and new OS. Bottom Line last HP computer and last time I buy anything from Best Buy.

I am pleased with this laptop. My only issue was that it was slow to start up. Once it did, it worked fine. I did not realize that the laptop talked you through the set up. I really like that feature. It took about 15 minutes to get set up. I like the backlit keyboard. I am still getting used to typing on it. The keys are a little flat, but not a big deal. The fan is kind of loud. I have only been on this laptop for a few minutes. The machine hasn't gotten too warm, so that's a good thing. Watching you tube videos on this big screen is nice. The sound is great, and the resolution is very clear. Surfing the web is great too. I'm still installing files and programs, but so far so good. The outside is a cute design, but it is plastic, and it does have a little weight to it. I guess I am used to my smaller laptops. I was expecting the machine to be a little faster, when opening files and web pages, but its not a deal breaker. The real test will be once my daughter starts playing her games. One thing I must add...it is very sensitive. I keep pulling up random pages, by accident. The touchpad is really sensitive. I will have to see how to adjust it. Overall this is a pretty cool computer, its a keeper!!

    Great Machine for the Price!

Got this machine on sale for 899.99 plus tax (Including the student discount). So an excellent deal in my opinion. Pros: Great CPU/GPU Combination. The RX580 handles a lot of games very nicely. I have the FPS locked at 60Hz and FALLOUT 4 never dips below that in ULTRA (All settings, including God Rays). I have played other demanding titles, but not as demanding as FALLOUT 4 is on this GPU, since the engine favors NVIDIA usually. The 1050ti, I had was getting only 35 FPS on the same settings. The RX580 falls between the 1060 and the 1070, on some titles the 1060 might be slightly faster, but not by much! There are zero professional or any other type of reviews for this machine. Its a mystery in the market. The screen is pretty descent. Its not as abysmal as the 15 inch Omen. That thing is garbage. The 17 inch is a CMN1738 which depending on which review you read it has 310 nits of brightness and covers on average 95% sRGB and around 60% aRGB. So while not great for photo or video editing, its pretty nice for most applications. Cons: For the price there are very little cons. If any the battery life is abysmal, but that is expected from this type of machine. I really cannot put this thing down. Another thing it’s the weight, but what to expect? Ohh, you need a pretty big bag pack to fit it in, but its not as bad as an Alienware. Others: I was hoping for TB3, but for 900 bucks what can I ask for. Lack of M.2 are easily fixed, same with the 12GB of RAM. The 7200 RPM drive is actually livable. I miss my SSD speeds, but I am buying an M.2 NVMe SSD soon to alleviate that lack of speeds. 1200 bucks still not a bad deal, but for 900 it was an excellent deal and hard to pass. I didn't give it five stars because I believe its appropriate for the regular 1199.99 price, but if anything I will say this is a 4.5 machine for the price I got it for.

First things first. This machine is an absolute beast! Although there's a lot of plastic in its construction, it is quite heavy and feels substantial. Most definitely not an ultra-portable. The design is a love it or hate it kind of thing, and I actually like it quite a bit. Every time I've used it in public I've gotten questions or comments. Enough about that, on to the good stuff. The Radeon RX 580 paired with the full HD screen make the video quality of this machine a huge step up from my last several PC's. The screen does only have a 60 Hz refresh rate, but I have noticed no choppiness or hesitation. The 8GB of dedicated video memory likely has a lot to do with that. I have found the 3 USB's and 1 thunderbolt port to be sufficient, although I haven't gotten around to trying out the full VR capabilities as of yet. Of course there's an HDMI out if that's something you're into. In heavy use sessions, there is a noticeable amount of heat generated, but the multi-fan and multi-duct design has eliminated the possibility of throttling die to heat buildup. Programs are snappy to open (limited more by the OS than the machine) and everything just works. The addition of a SSD would make this Omen a formidable challenger to machines costing twice as much, as I believe the HDD is a bit of a hindrance. The sound from the onboard speakers is not theater quality but it's sufficient. Headsets sound amazing, whether wired or Bluetooth. The red backlighting on the keyboard takes a bit of time to get used to but after that it's great. The red WASD have white backlights and you can toggle between all on, WASD only, or all off, depending on your preference or mood. The dedicated Omen button gives you quick access to essential system performance information. There are also 6 programmable macro keys along and just off the left side of the keyboard. HP has built a very solid mid-level machine that could easily be upgraded (SSD and a RAM bump) to make it into a real powerhouse. I've been very impressed and am excited to keep pushing the limits to see where it stops. I don't think I've gotten close yet!

This is a good gaming laptop - it looks super cool and has an excellent video card and a decent amount of RAM. It works well for games like Payday 2, COD, Battlefield 1, and others. I have only two real issues with the laptop - the biggest is the fact it has a hard drive. I highly recommend replacing the hard drive with a high end SSD - it will improve performance immensely. As far as weight - it is quite heavy, but that's expected with a 17" gaming laptop. All in all a good machine - would be great with SSD.

This is a very nice gaming laptop. However, why so stingy with the RAM? Also, needs a touch screen. I also have the 17 inch HP laptop with a touch screen and 16 gigs of RAM. It is a really good laptop, actually better than the Omen. The Omen lacks some features the HP touchscreen has. I have a lot of PCs both desktop and laptop. I always loved computers since the days of the huge mainframes that took up entire buildings. Until recently, I had my first PC. A Leading Edge DOS run with dual 5 1/4 floppy drives. No hard drive. They crashed too much back then. And remember monotone screens? Mine was a lovely green, LOL!!

Excellent gaming platform, poor general use laptop

So, let me start by saying I love this machine. I was nervous about it being too big at first since it's the first 17" laptop I've owned, but after about a month my wife and I have both settled into the size and feel like 17" is just right for a gaming laptop that doesn't leave the house much. The performance is excellent, for what you're paying, and it handles VR like a champ (I'm using the HP Windows Mixed Reality headset which I got on a promo with this machine over the holidays). As a benchmark, I'm running 180fps in most instances in World of Warcraft, while dropping to between 40-60fps while in heavily populated areas. Even though the machine is a great gaming machine, it does not really do a great job with general use otherwise. The battery life is poor in all situations, it's bulky and cumbersome to carry around, and the trackpad is 'good enough'. I bought this machine strictly for gaming and am very pleased with it. If I were still in college it would not be a good fit at all. Do not buy this expecting a productivity powerhouse. Bottom line: If you're looking for a great budget gaming machine, get this one. If you're looking for a productivity machine, look elsewhere.

I am really surprised by how much Value is here in this laptop, the overall build quality is solid feeling with very little flex around the keyboard area. I personally love the look of this laptop and enjoy the small touches they made to the keyboard lighting making the WSAD keys glow White while all the others glow red during game play. Normally I play on full sized desktop computers that I have Custom made, I spent about 8 years working for a small Computer company and have built more Gaming machines for varying budgets than I'd like to really think about, but I needed something portable that could also play some games. I was a little apprehensive about buying something with an AMD video card, in the past I haven't had the best luck and when building Machines we would always get the highest return rate on builds featuring AMD cards, but I took a chance and I'm glad I did! This RX 580 is a perfect fit for 1080p gaming at a solid 60 FPS, plays Destiny 2 oh High settings 60fps no problem, Overwatch, Diablo 3 and Path of Exile have not presented any challenges think I can get a good 2 years out of this laptop before upgrading. Sound: this was an area that really surprised me, was not expecting the sound on this laptop to be so good! I think it is using some forward firing speakers in the front and two near the rear, I'm not exactly sure how they are doing it but it really does give a good directional awareness impression when playing First Person Shooters. Heat also has not been a problem, normally I'd have taken the whole thing apart and reapplied some Arctic Silver to the Thermal Solution provided to bring down the temps, but so far tempatures have been great, no cpu or gpu throttling in my laptop so far. Also some laptops make the mistake of venting heat out the side right onto your mouse hand, or putting the GPU right under the WSAD keys which makes your hand start to sweat after prolonged gaming sessions, this laptop does neither of those all the heat vents out the back and the gpu/cpu is far enough toward the back to not be right under your palm when playing games. There are a couple pretty big cons however, there is no SSD in this laptop, if you are using the hard drive the laptop comes with it will feel like something out of 2010, it is SLOW booting, slow loading, slow downloading, slow installing just dog slow. Even tho the laptop itself is a great deal, I would plan on spending another 100-200 on a solid state drive, in 2017 it's not an option anymore windows 10 does so many things in the back ground that the drive is always going to have something accessing it while playing which will slow down your entire enjoyment of the powerful i7 cpu and good performing RX 580 graphics card. Last Con is the Screen, the unit I saw in Bestbuy looked like it had a good screen, mine however has a LOT of lightbleed in the corners, it's so bad that I can even tell some of the colors are washed out while in the games, I don't know if this is universal for these panels or if I just got unlucky, but at this price point I think it's probably a combination of the two I don't think the screen is all that great and I also lost the screen lottery and got a bad one in the batch. It's not a deal breaker, but the screen is something I will probably be replacing or I might take this laptop back and swap it out for another laptop that is exactly the same and see if the screen issue is resolved. Don't let my screen comment take any wind out of your sails about this laptop purchase however, just go into the store and take a good hard look at the screen on a display unit, go to a webpage with nothing but a black background and see if the backlight bleed is something you can forgive, not everybody is as picky as I am.

The Mid 2017 HP Omen gaming laptop is a solid performer with the looks to match, of course appearance being subjective. The Omen has the typical gamer aesthetic; however, it is not overbearing or gaudy when compared to other laptops in the performance gaming category. The Omen is definitely not your ultra-portable notebook to sit at the coffee shop with, a possible con for some, but instead it is a great desktop replacement and portable gaming powerhouse. This is a certainly a large laptop with some hefty weight, conversely, I believe its weight gives it a sturdy build quality, while also adding ample room for HP’s cooling solution that handles heat dissipation very adequately. I previously had a ASUS GL502VM with a GTX1060 which had terrible thermal management, so much so that I returned it days later to exchange for the Omen. I am happy to report that thermal management is not an issue with the HP. The AMD Rx 580 handles modern games with ease. I have listed some performance numbers for a few popular AAA titles below. .Overwatch 80 Fps Ultra .Battlefield 1 50 Fps Avg High .GTA V 60 Fps Locked Very High settings Overall, this laptop is a great choice for the price point. I am satisfied with my purchase. If I had to nitpick, it would be the forgoing of a SSD boot drive. In 2017, in my opinion a SSD boot drive should be standard In all PC’s. Luckily, HP has made upgradeability a synch with an easily removable back cover giving you access to add an SSD or more ram. I personally will be adding a SSD and expanding the ram capacity. HP has made a nearly perfect mid-range budget friendly gaming solution that meets high quality standards. I rate this laptop a 4 out of 5. Only not giving a perfect score due the exclusion of an SSD, as mentioned.

The price is very decent for its quite powerful specs. Overall built quality is also pretty nice and sturdy. However, the cooling fan is extremely noisy. I understand all gaming laptops tend to get loud under heavy load, but this one is almost like a jet engine. Also the battery life is not so good even if it's just vedio streaming. I can only get a little over 2 hours of watching Twitch. I blame AMD for these two cons since rx580 has a relatively high TDP. And it doesn't seem to support switching between intel IGPU hence casuing poor battery life during low loads due to always relying on the more power-hungry dedicated GPU. While it's still a decent machine, it could be better had it gone with Nvidia which had better power efficiency and laptop implementation.

The HP Omen 17" Laptop - Intel Core i7, 12 GB Memory, AMD Radeon RX 580 graphics, 1TB Hard Drive Included- The 17" laptop, Windows 10 Home, AC adapter, McAfee LifeSave service, complimentary phone support during the duration of your hardware warranty, and a limited warranty. The HP Omen offers an internal microphone, camera lights and camera, WLAN antennas, Touchpad on/off key and light, Windows lock key, Airplane mode key, OMEN key, Touchpad with left/right buttons, Windows Key, Mute key and light, security cable slot, mini DisplayPort, HDMI port, RJ-45 jack/status lights, USB ports (2), USB Type C port, Audio-out (headphones)/Audio-in combo jack, Audio in (microphone) jack, Memory Card reader. The laptop is about 16 5/8" x 11 3/4" x 1 3/8". The screen is nice and large. Easy to view what you need to with enough display. Because of the larger size, I feel like it's pretty heavy. I would not want to tote this around too much. The design on the new HP Omen is very cool and sleek. The black and red make it look ominous and masculine. The red backlights on the keyboard are a nice design feature. The W,A,S,D keys are solid red to highlight for games. It definitely has the gamer in mind with this set up. The keyboard is really large. So someone with small hands might find it difficult to type on. My 8 yr old daughter is learning and practicing to type and the keys are pretty spread out for her to be fluent. The Bang and Olufsen built in speakers offer a high quality sound. The Bluetooth interface allows you to wirelessly transfer photos, music and media. One con I have is that the power adapter is is too short with a length of 9' 10". When I'm sitting on the couch and I need to charge the laptop, the cord won't reach to the wall to be plugged in. That's a personal issue that not everyone may have, but it's a nuisance. I don't want to be restricted as to where I can use the laptop while it's charging. Also, the adapter is large and heavy. Another negative is it does not include a DVD/CD drive. I like to have that in my laptops but you can always order an external drive for a pretty reasonable price. We haven't had any technical issues with the Omen so far. For our basic, every day needs it processes fast and has a ton of storage
