Great amp for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Onkyo wasn't so hot when I was young, but now - after merger with Pioneer - their products are quite good. This receiver/amp does everything - high tech hdmi/4k inputs and outputs, RCA connectors and built-in phono amp - so I was able to hook up all my old- and new-tech devices. With my Definitive Technology surround sound speaker system, sound quality for video and music is excellent. Only drawback is the confusing remote control, for which it loses that fifth star.

Best Value overall
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've looked at a lot of different amps and this one stood out the most. 7.2 channels + 2 channels for zone two that may also be used as a 9.2 configuration. Blue tooth is swift, No lag with any settings. Very easy interface (my girlfriend can work it, so yes it is simple). And Very powerful. I feel like my BIV Vinturi speakers are ready to explode when I turn it up to 80% of the volume, with almost no noticeable distortion.

Zone two unreliable
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this unit for zone 1 speakers in the living room and zone 2 speakers back porch. Zone 2 stopped working shortly after, purchase and an online search revealed this to be a common Onkyo failing. Complained to Best Buy who said I should have purchased the extended warranty. I said they should not sell products with long term design flaws. Of course I have to have the factory fix the unit......

Great
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The sound is great coming thru my speakers. One thing I already had my picture quality on my tv fix, but when I connected the receiver, I had to set my TV again. Also sometimes I'm watching something on my dvr, and when I fast foward, sound cuts off. I have to push the button on the remote example the bluray, then come back to satellite. Sound cones back. Other than that is great

Setup difficult
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Just got this installed this past Sunday, weeks after purchasing. Not a cut and dry isntall. Told quite awhile to get speakers all set up and working and then to get the tuner and Sony TV to see one another and work together. Hope it lasts a long while, not ready to go thru the process again anytime soon.

Hassle
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After reading the reviews I felt confident with this receiver...the set up was easy enough...sounded great...for 3 weeks...then suddenly it quit working and flashed an error code which geek squad said meant it was an internal problem and to return it...I was highly upset...so my search continues..and reading the most recent reviews I see this seems to be a common issue lately

Excellent receiver
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this for my new home theater setup. It was very easy to setup and calibrate, and the zone 2 function is great. I use it for my outdoor speakers, and it is very easy to stream music from the receiver.

Excellent
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This receiver is excellent with AccuEq engaged or not. Very dynamic and clear with dialog. I only wish it would display Atmos vs just having a blue light to indicate Atmos is on.

Onkyo says to get a different manufacturer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Day 0 - geek squad set up my new 646. Day 1 - subwoofer intermittently dropped out. Day 2 - audio and video would intermittently drop out. geek squad couldn't do anything because it was difficult to reproduce (thus, intermittently) (min of 20 times in a 60 min show). Day 7 - CEC failed completely. 4 emails, 6 phone calls, and finally a call to the national number to get a hold of geek squad. Called Onkyo support. They advised me that this was a major problem with there entire line, and they had no solution. They literally said "turn it off and back on. If that doesn't work, return it and go with another manufacturer.

Great value for the money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's full featured so for the price I paid $399.00, (down from a list price of $599.00), and with free shipping and the Best-Buy reward program in which I earned $45 dollars with the purchase you couldn't beat it. The other brand receivers in this price range, (even at $599.00), didn't have a turn table input that you could connect right to without having to have an additional accessory for it to function.

Receiver fails after 7 months
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I also purchased the ONKYO 7.1 home theater speakers to accompany this receiver. The sound is great when it works. The subwoofer stopped working so I sent it in for warranty repair. Now the receiver stopped working so I get to listen to programs using the sound from the TV. Once again I am being inconvenienced due to warranty repair. I spent $1250 for this equipment and I am very disappointed that components are failing so soon and I have to pay to have the item shipped for repair. I hope there is an alternative to ONKYO because I don't plan to purchase their products again. Besides, their customer service is also really bad and they just don't care that you are having a problem with their products. I went to best buy thinking that they would help me choose quality products but I have had so many problems with the products they helped me pick out. They get my money and I get really poor products. Not a good exchange.

Disappointed in Onkyo
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had an Onkyo surround sound receiver for probably 14 years, before HDMI. It worked great. So I had no concerns about buy this one. Big mistake. For some crazy reason, the receiver will not play the sound if it thinks there is a problem with the picture. So if I fast forward my Directv box or Apple TV, it frequently will not play the sound until I turn the unit off and back on. I sit here right now with no receiver because I had to send mine off. If Onkyo really were confident in their products, they would have swapped mine out since it was only 90 days old. Look at Yamaha. I wish I would have

Didn't last long.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I upgrade often so I've owned countless stereo receivers. I actually prefer Yamaha and Pioneer receivers but expressed my interest in this one because at the time it was the only receiver I could find on the market that met all of the new 4K ultra requirements. Pretty much all of my old receivers are still in use in secondary locations or sold to friends and I know they are still working. Some are over 25 years old. I've only had 1 other receiver break out of all of them. It was also an Onkyo. I received this Onkyo receiver as a gift around 6 months ago. It was purchased from Best Buy. Easy to setup but onscreen graphics look like an old dos computer. Did the job though. The HDMI out stopped working. Unplugged the receiver hoping it would reset. Plugged it back in and got "Initial Setup - Please See TV". Of course I can't see TV because the HDMI output died. I managed to get out of the setup menu using the receivers display. Sounds terrible now with a distinct echo that won't go away. About half the time that I turn it on, it tries to do initial setup again. Tried to get HDMI working by switching main to sub etc. Both outputs are dead. Like I said, this is only the 2nd receiver I have ever had break. It had the shortest lifespan of any receiver I have ever owned. The other Onkyo gave me a year and a half.

Open Box Item Arrived Broken
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Unfortunately, it arrived DOA. This was an open box purchase. It had an amp check NG error code on start up. Disappointed with how it was boxed for shipping. In addition, the remote and setup microphone was missing. The description on the open box item did not indicate that any items were missing.
