Less than two months, and the receiver doesn't work
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Less than two months, and the receiver doesn't work. I can't reset , the display reads ( NG: L R ) . I looked though the manual, it says nothing about this command. There is nothing I can do to make it work.

Love it!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Replaced a Denon AVR-790 with this Onkyo initially to gain a few more rear HDMI ports 7 vs 4. Really am enjoying the internet connection and TuneIn Radio and Pandora right from the stereo instead of requiring the computer that is part of my home theater system. Haven't hooked them up yet (need to run wiring in the attic first) but purchased a pair of outdoor speakers to connect to zone 2. The ability to install the Denon app on my phone and control it from anywhere around the house while connected to my wi-fi router was another big selling point. Was looking at the Denon AVR-X2100W in Magnolia but wasn't impressed with the more difficult setup and the inconsistent bluetooth pairing (2 different receivers at 2 different Best Buy stores). Bought the Onkyo and was impressed that it picked up all my devices, no matter how they were hooked up and just worked. Initial setup was a breeze. My old Denon required a decipher manual (Batpig) just to get everything to connect properly and had a remote with controls on both sides which became tiring every time I wanted to tweak settings, mainly due to forgetting what everything did in between. The Onkyo on-screen settings are very intuitive and have plenty of adjustments for all functions and audio controls. The Onkyo AccuEQ only has 1 placement adjustment vs. the Denon Audyssey with multiple adjustment placements. Not sure how much difference it makes though. So far I'm impressed, probably more so once I get some Atmos speakers.

Great receiver, simple setup
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Lots of HDMI inputs, great sound, setup was fast and easy (less than 10 minutes). Runs cool, even in an AV cabinet. Sound is easily customized, and plenty of power.

Sound is excellent, all inputs don't work properly
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For the price, this is a very good AV device. I was disappointed that this unit has a conductive back at the speaker inputs - very easy for a stray speaker wire to touch the conductive back. All of the inputs do not work as expected...since not all of my devices use HDMI cables I have to use RCA connections (including Component connections) - these simply did not work. There may be a resolution in the 200+ page manual. For some reason when using one of the HDMI inputs the sound could be heard but the picture would appear only for a few seconds and then blank out! If I changed the volume the same thing would happen. I noticed that if I clicked on the "Q" button on the remote, this resolved the issue. One of the primary reasons I purchased this Onkyo AV Receiver was due to the issue with YAMAHA AV Units being so susceptible to static electricity. Either a lightning strike was too close or a power surge caused my Yamaha to no longer power up even though I have a whole house surge protector plus a Monster Power Strip. After talking to several repair shops I discovered that these repair shops have a disproportionately larger number of Yamaha units than any other AV Units due to their susceptibility to static electricity. A simple fix could be included in EVERY AV Unit that used to be considered standard - a circuit breaker! It would be worth the small amount of price increase rather than having to pay $300 - $400 to repair the unit. Stepping down from my soapbox now... Having said this, the unit does have great sound - it does not have the bells and whistles that some comparable units do and the display is outdated, but the sound quality does make up for it.

Great receiver. Still no DTS X though
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I replaced my Onkyo TX-SR707 with the TX-NR646. Set up was simple using the included setup microphone. If you are looking to future proof your home theater this may be the receiver for you. It is HDCP 2.2 capable, Dolby Atmos. Sadly no DTS X. It is at a decent price point for the features it provides and power output. I have my 7.2 speaker system set up for Dolby Atmos 5.2.2. The receiver does not upscale it only passes the 3D and 4K signal through to the LG OLED (55EF9500). Connections There are plenty of inputs for components. I am only using HDMI ( I may get a record player and test out the Phono input.) The first three inputs are the only ones HDCP 2.2 compatible. I have my Xfinity, 4K up scaling Blu-ray, and Roku 4 on those inputs. The Apple TV, PS3 and Amazon FireTV Stick on the next three. I have one more left. Connections are evenly spaced, so there's enough room for the HDMI cables. One HDCP 2.2 compatible output goes to the OLED. Speaker terminals are binding posts. So they are compatible with banana plugs and bare speaker wire. There are two sub woofer preouts. I connect to the LFE input on both sub. I use the receiver to control the volume and crossover frequency to them. I don't use the wireless I'm using Ethernet connection. So I have to review of the wireless feature. Audio The volume never gets above 50. Rarely does it even get that loud. It's very clean un-distored sound. I'm no audiophile but I do enjoy tight bass and clean mids and highs. This fits the bill. You are able to tweak the speaker levels if the automatic setting are not to your liking. I did have to adjust my dolby atmos right height speaker it measured it at 3 ft from the microphone when it was more like 13 ft. The receiver doesn't have as many DSP settings as my old SR707. There is no THX decoding. You would have to go up to the TX-NR747 or higher. When playing blue-ray I let the receiver decode automatically. Dolby Atmos works great. I streamed Mad Max UHD from VUDU through Roku 4 and the receiver had not problem processing the 4K and Dolby Atmos signal. I recommend using the Onkyo app to monitor the incoming and outgoing signals. If you have apple devices, airplay works great. Still no DTS X yet unfortunately. Still waiting for a firmware update. If and when Onkyo releases the update I may give this a 5 star rating. DTS:X™ Support (not yet) Dolby Atmos® Support (firmware update needed) 170 W per Channel Hi-Current Amp Design for Authentic Sound Reproduction HDMI® 8 In / 2 Out Including 1 Front HDMI & HDCP 2.2 for 4K UltraHD Built-in Bluetooth & Wi-Fi® with Pandora, Spotify, and AirPlay DSD 5.6 MHz, FLAC 192 kHz/24-bit Hi-Res Audio Capable 384 kHz/32-bit Hi-Grade DAC AccuEQ Room Acoustic Calibration

Great Reciever So Far
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this receiver last month, but I only just got speakers to hook up to it yesterday. I decided to go with the Onkyo TX-NR646 due to the fact that it was one of the few newer receivers that is 4k HDCP 2.2 complaint on several HDMI ports, which I want for future-proofing. I do not currently own a 4k setup, so I cannot comment on how the picture quality passes through as of yet. I can say that setting up the unit was easy as long as you have no issue following the on screen prompts. The only issue that I ran across was attempting to set up the WiFi. The Onkyo would find my network fine, but repeatedly failed to connect. I am not sure if this was an issue on the part of the receiver or the router, but I rebooted both and then was able to connect without any further issue. The sound quality that the system provides is great; much better than the old sound bar that I used to have. I am excited about the fact that the 646 is Atmos compatable, but again, I do not currently have the height channels to test this fully. Overall it is a great receiver for the price, especially if you want to future proof yourself for 4k content.

Amazing value for a starter
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Paired to a old Infinity SL40 set. The sound is great. Entire range is clear and bass goes deep enough and loud enough. This blows other bundled sets out of the water (comparison: samsung 2.1 sound bar and wireless speaker). Of course this setup is significantly more premium. Using it on a daily basis makes the purchase more than worth the cost.

So far, So Excellent!!!!!!!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I read the reviews and already own an Onkyo receiver (it's 5+ years old still going strong) but wanted some new features (hdmi pass through, Bluetooth, etc....) that were not available when I bought mine. So far it took me 30 +/- minutes to setup and test my connections to make sure it would do what I want. I have 7 different devices running HDMI but anywhere from only 2-5 HDMI inputs depending on which tv I use so I wanted a receiver that I could run everything to it (with just the one HDMI cable) and then use a single HDMI cable to the TV. Sounds easy I know but I also don't want to have to run my receiver ALL THE TIME, there in lies the rub. With this unit I've hooked up everything (including the temperamental ps4 that never liked my HDMI switch and had to be run directly to the tv) with no issues and by switching a couple of settings can have sound to the tv with receiver OFF from anything connected (just use receiver remote to change input WHILE RECEIVER IS IN STAND-BY MODE ) and then just turn receiver on and sound is then cut from tv and plays through the receiver ONLY. Now that's just a personal preference you can run sound from both tv and receiver at the same time you just need an ARC compliant tv though. Now I will say this using Bluetooth to stream music from my phone is nice but it appears to me that when you hit Bluetooth it tries to search for new devices instead of just pairing with my phone. So I let it do its thing and then turn on my Bluetooth and no problems. Well I hope this helps anyone on the fence and right now my local store had it for $499 so get it while it's on sale if you can but knowing what I know now I wish I had bought it months ago even for the $599 price tag.

Q: QuestionHow many of the HDMI inputs are HDMI 2.0 and which ones?I know on a lot of newer receivers, maybe only 1 or 2 of the actual inputs are 2.0 and the rest are the older format.

Q: Questionno a/b switching capabilityWith the onkyo tx nr 646, how do you actuvate zone 2speakers with no a/b sitching capability?
Asked by ALEX.
- A:Answer Zone 2 is a seperate pre amp out. You can also configure Zone 2 to output on the surround back speaker taps, giving you a powered Zone 2. Turning it on and off and selecting sources is done with the remote control. You have to press the Zone 2 button on the remote, then the power buttons, input selection and volume controls are set to operate Zone 2. Check the owners manual. If you don't have it, download it from Onkyo's web portal.

Q: QuestionWill I be happy with this?I'm a long time flag ship Denon and Integra customer, I picked out this because of customer comments and the CNET review I'm also a bit cash poor right now. Stopped at the store and picked up the unit, I think my last Denon box weight more than the 646. Is this really something more that cheep plastic junk?
Asked by Gary.
- A:Answer Weight has absolutely nothing to do with performance or general manufacture. I can testify that the 646 is very well designed.

Q: QuestionTX NR646 Does this model have a phono input that will not require a separate pre ampI have an old Dual turntable that I used with my of TX 866. That unit has finally failed. Will this unit be able to connect the phone and play my old vinyl ? I see a lot of bad reviews with short working life on this model after set up - complete failures. Is this a common issue and will you replace a unit that has this issue within days of set up?
Asked by Joe.
- A:Answer Hi Joe, yes the tx-nr646 does have a dedicated Phono input so no pre amp will be necessary. We currently do not have issues with this model. If there are any issues with your purchase or if you have other concerns please feel free to email me at askOnkyo@us.onkyo.com, Thanks, JT
