I replaced my Onkyo TX-SR707 with the TX-NR646. Set up was simple using the included setup microphone. If you are looking to future proof your home theater this may be the receiver for you. It is HDCP 2.2 capable, Dolby Atmos. Sadly no DTS X. It is at a decent price point for the features it provides and power output. I have my 7.2 speaker system set up for Dolby Atmos 5.2.2. The receiver does not upscale it only passes the 3D and 4K signal through to the LG OLED (55EF9500).
Connections
There are plenty of inputs for components. I am only using HDMI ( I may get a record player and test out the Phono input.) The first three inputs are the only ones HDCP 2.2 compatible. I have my Xfinity, 4K up scaling Blu-ray, and Roku 4 on those inputs. The Apple TV, PS3 and Amazon FireTV Stick on the next three. I have one more left. Connections are evenly spaced, so there's enough room for the HDMI cables. One HDCP 2.2 compatible output goes to the OLED.
Speaker terminals are binding posts. So they are compatible with banana plugs and bare speaker wire.
There are two sub woofer preouts. I connect to the LFE input on both sub. I use the receiver to control the volume and crossover frequency to them.
I don't use the wireless I'm using Ethernet connection. So I have to review of the wireless feature.
Audio
The volume never gets above 50. Rarely does it even get that loud. It's very clean un-distored sound. I'm no audiophile but I do enjoy tight bass and clean mids and highs. This fits the bill. You are able to tweak the speaker levels if the automatic setting are not to your liking. I did have to adjust my dolby atmos right height speaker it measured it at 3 ft from the microphone when it was more like 13 ft.
The receiver doesn't have as many DSP settings as my old SR707. There is no THX decoding. You would have to go up to the TX-NR747 or higher. When playing blue-ray I let the receiver decode automatically. Dolby Atmos works great. I streamed Mad Max UHD from VUDU through Roku 4 and the receiver had not problem processing the 4K and Dolby Atmos signal.
I recommend using the Onkyo app to monitor the incoming and outgoing signals. If you have apple devices, airplay works great.
Still no DTS X yet unfortunately. Still waiting for a firmware update. If and when Onkyo releases the update I may give this a 5 star rating.

Less than two months, and the receiver doesn't work.
I can't reset , the display reads ( NG: L R ) . I looked though the manual, it says nothing about this command. There is nothing I can do to make it work.

I purchased this receiver last month, but I only just got speakers to hook up to it yesterday. I decided to go with the Onkyo TX-NR646 due to the fact that it was one of the few newer receivers that is 4k HDCP 2.2 complaint on several HDMI ports, which I want for future-proofing. I do not currently own a 4k setup, so I cannot comment on how the picture quality passes through as of yet.
I can say that setting up the unit was easy as long as you have no issue following the on screen prompts. The only issue that I ran across was attempting to set up the WiFi. The Onkyo would find my network fine, but repeatedly failed to connect. I am not sure if this was an issue on the part of the receiver or the router, but I rebooted both and then was able to connect without any further issue.
The sound quality that the system provides is great; much better than the old sound bar that I used to have. I am excited about the fact that the 646 is Atmos compatable, but again, I do not currently have the height channels to test this fully.
Overall it is a great receiver for the price, especially if you want to future proof yourself for 4k content.

I purchased the Denon AVR-X1200W first and was not happy with it at all. Returned it after 2 weeks and upgraded to the Onkyo TX-NR646. The Onkyo has better sound quality and performance. I don't need to use a 2nd receiver for Zone 2 like I did with the Denon. And I can still get 7.2 in the home theater. Its Atmos enabled but Im not ready to add the extra front height speakers. 7.2 will do just fine for a while. Can independently control each zone from my Android phone with ease. The Denon app had more control options but lost connection alot and several times it would change zone 1 source while I was controlling zone 2. If you're on the fence go with the Onkyo. You won't regret it.

For the price, this is a very good AV device. I was disappointed that this unit has a conductive back at the speaker inputs - very easy for a stray speaker wire to touch the conductive back. All of the inputs do not work as expected...since not all of my devices use HDMI cables I have to use RCA connections (including Component connections) - these simply did not work. There may be a resolution in the 200+ page manual. For some reason when using one of the HDMI inputs the sound could be heard but the picture would appear only for a few seconds and then blank out! If I changed the volume the same thing would happen. I noticed that if I clicked on the "Q" button on the remote, this resolved the issue. One of the primary reasons I purchased this Onkyo AV Receiver was due to the issue with YAMAHA AV Units being so susceptible to static electricity. Either a lightning strike was too close or a power surge caused my Yamaha to no longer power up even though I have a whole house surge protector plus a Monster Power Strip. After talking to several repair shops I discovered that these repair shops have a disproportionately larger number of Yamaha units than any other AV Units due to their susceptibility to static electricity. A simple fix could be included in EVERY AV Unit that used to be considered standard - a circuit breaker! It would be worth the small amount of price increase rather than having to pay $300 - $400 to repair the unit. Stepping down from my soapbox now... Having said this, the unit does have great sound - it does not have the bells and whistles that some comparable units do and the display is outdated, but the sound quality does make up for it.

The reason i purchased this unit was to use two sets of outdoor speakers. I needed dual channels and a decent amount of power, this head has fulfilled both requirements flawlessly. The sound is clear, channels easy to set up, and can be loud enough to anger the neighbors. I highly recommend this product for anyone needing a good dual channel stereo at a good price.

Replaced a Denon AVR-790 with this Onkyo initially to gain a few more rear HDMI ports 7 vs 4. Really am enjoying the internet connection and TuneIn Radio and Pandora right from the stereo instead of requiring the computer that is part of my home theater system. Haven't hooked them up yet (need to run wiring in the attic first) but purchased a pair of outdoor speakers to connect to zone 2. The ability to install the Denon app on my phone and control it from anywhere around the house while connected to my wi-fi router was another big selling point. Was looking at the Denon AVR-X2100W in Magnolia but wasn't impressed with the more difficult setup and the inconsistent bluetooth pairing (2 different receivers at 2 different Best Buy stores). Bought the Onkyo and was impressed that it picked up all my devices, no matter how they were hooked up and just worked. Initial setup was a breeze. My old Denon required a decipher manual (Batpig) just to get everything to connect properly and had a remote with controls on both sides which became tiring every time I wanted to tweak settings, mainly due to forgetting what everything did in between. The Onkyo on-screen settings are very intuitive and have plenty of adjustments for all functions and audio controls. The Onkyo AccuEQ only has 1 placement adjustment vs. the Denon Audyssey with multiple adjustment placements. Not sure how much difference it makes though. So far I'm impressed, probably more so once I get some Atmos speakers.

After reviewing A LOT of receivers, I finally came to conclusion and getting this one. I am so glad I did! It is a great product getting into the premium line of receivers. It has everything I need including the dtsx, Bluetooth, multiple HDMI ports, a ton of customizable sound preferences and 4k compatability. It produces great picture and sound for my 4k TV and surround sound home theater system. I am able to quickly link my phone to the receiver to play music. I am very happy with this purchase and I highly recommend this receiver!

Reviewed several different receivers and talked to different sales staff about which was the best. Everyone agreed on this one. I was about to order it online when I saw an open box option for about $100 less! Figured why not. The received came in original box with all original manuals and accessories. For the life of me I cannot figure out why this was an open box! The received even had the little cap on the plug so it doesn't even look like it was ever plugged in. Thanks for an awesome deal Best Buy! And this received rocks. Easy to hook up and sounds great!

Does the job right. Powerful enough to drive all 7 surround speakers effortlessly. Its the Cummins of audio engines. Sleek and impressive looking, sound is phenomenal especially when hooked up to an ATMOS configuration. Running 6 vintage Advent speakers coupled with a blood thirsty JBL LC2 and a Klispch 12" 400w Sub. Better than real life! PROS: WiFi music is a breeze, has a somewhat nifty phone app to make basic adjustments and did I mention the POWER? CONS: My only complaint is that its a little difficult to switching fields and navigating the system through the remote, especially adjustments through the on screen menu. Definitely a learning curve. Overall its one of the best bang for the buck receivers on the market.

Replaced a 10 year old Onyko receiver with this newer model. I connected my Bose speaker system and I cannot believe the difference in sound. The wireless and bluetooth features were a big part of my decision. But once installed - boy the sound from all speakers is so noticeable I was blown away. Easy to connect and set up. My surround never sounded this good.... Great upgrade and for the price it was was a excellent choice. Highly recommend this receiver.

My new Onkyo receiver is a replacement of an older one. This is the only receiver for the money that has Bluetooth, Wifi, 8 hdmi inputs, supports 4K hd, and easy setup for 7.2 surround sound. Awesome power, and the smart remote even controls my X1 Comcast dvr. Really great receiver over the competition. If you find the same features on a different brand receiver it will still be a lot higher in price. This is the best A/V receiver Onkyo has made.

Excellent quality for the price. The sound is very clear and powerful. It's a great match with my Klipsch and Bose speakers, as well as my 4K TV. It was pretty easy to set up and the speaker microphone actually did a great job of balancing the speakers. Everyone that hears it is very impressed. The two zone feature is very nice also. My only complaint is that the receiver switched functions by itself a few times. It could be that I missed something during the set up. Otherwise everything works great. I even use it for my old turntable, laserdisc player and VCR - all with improved sound.

Lots of power for a moderately priced receiver. This just replaced my old Onkyo NR727. Even though it does not have THX as the higher end models, It still has great separation with my 7.1 speaker setup. It has two HDMI outputs which I was looking for to feed my projector without swapping cables. Also one great feature is it has a live HDMI pass though. This means you can have the receiver off and you can still watch TV from your cable or satellite box. Perfect for when you just want to watch news and don't want the the Receiver on. Quick set up with lots of input options in the rear. The only thing missing is a S video input for us who still have SVHS recorders or Camcorders. Also miss the audio inputs in the front for my phone, but the 646 has Bluetooth to pair up with the phone.Up to 8 devises. I also like the internet feature to receive my Sirius/XM account with no extra charge. You have to have internet service with Sirius/XM to access this feature. Great price with all the bells and whistles.

This receiver was a replacement for another Onkyo receiver we had for 10 years. The only reason we replaced it is because we wanted to upgrade and get new options to be more compatible with our new TV. So far it hasn't disappointed. Bluetooth has been the most fun - streaming music from apps like Pandora through the surround sound speakers in our family room has been great! We recommend this - and really any - Onkyo receive available.

I read the reviews and already own an Onkyo receiver (it's 5+ years old still going strong) but wanted some new features (hdmi pass through, Bluetooth, etc....) that were not available when I bought mine. So far it took me 30 +/- minutes to setup and test my connections to make sure it would do what I want. I have 7 different devices running HDMI but anywhere from only 2-5 HDMI inputs depending on which tv I use so I wanted a receiver that I could run everything to it (with just the one HDMI cable) and then use a single HDMI cable to the TV. Sounds easy I know but I also don't want to have to run my receiver ALL THE TIME, there in lies the rub. With this unit I've hooked up everything (including the temperamental ps4 that never liked my HDMI switch and had to be run directly to the tv) with no issues and by switching a couple of settings can have sound to the tv with receiver OFF from anything connected (just use receiver remote to change input WHILE RECEIVER IS IN STAND-BY MODE ) and then just turn receiver on and sound is then cut from tv and plays through the receiver ONLY. Now that's just a personal preference you can run sound from both tv and receiver at the same time you just need an ARC compliant tv though. Now I will say this using Bluetooth to stream music from my phone is nice but it appears to me that when you hit Bluetooth it tries to search for new devices instead of just pairing with my phone. So I let it do its thing and then turn on my Bluetooth and no problems. Well I hope this helps anyone on the fence and right now my local store had it for $499 so get it while it's on sale if you can but knowing what I know now I wish I had bought it months ago even for the $599 price tag.
