This is my second Onkyo receiver. I love their products. What they lack in the "beauty" of their devices or "updated/fresh" interfaces, they more than make up for in their hardware. It's an AV receiver...I don't care if it's all black with a green LED display. This buries other "sleek" models in sheer muscle (maybe the Denon AVR-S710W model aside).
I was actually going to buy the 636 model initially (based in part on The Wirecutter's review) but quickly realized this 646 model would help "future proof" me more.
With three HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 inputs and seven total HDMI inputs, it's hard to go wrong with this model.
Highly recommend it - you won't be sorry.

I was slightly tentative at first with this purchase. I had read some reviews online that said people were getting error codes and hearing popping noises. I had an Onkyo for a number of years prior, but needed to upgrade. I stuck with Onkyo due to the performance of my previous receiver. I have now had this product for well over a month and it works flawlessly. I love having the ability to change between zones A and B or even play the music in BOTH ZONES! at the same time. Air play works great with my phone and both zones. I have it paired with a harmony remote and that works great.
The only issue I had was created by myself. I did not realize the HDCP 2.2 HDMI can only be utilized by devices that output that format. My Xfinity cable box does not and I couldn't figure out why it was not working. I simply changed the HDMI input and it worked just fine. I currently only use the HDCP ports for one thing, my Amazon FireTV. It looks amazing.
I use it for 7.2 and I have two additional speakers in an exercise room (Zone B). It works great for both. Highly recommend. I did install a fan cooling system in my component cabinet just in case.

Onkyo TX-NR646 was exactly what I was looking for. It is a great, powerful receiver, serving as both a video-surround sound processor, AND as a multi-room music player. The multiple jacks for legacy/analog devices were an added plus. The self-balancing speaker setup was a delight. I would give this product my top recommendation

Bought this unit for my new house that had a finished basement with SpeakerCraft speakers pre installed in the walls. Wanted a unit that would provide enough power to them all while having enough creature features to satisfy. Does a great job at everything that I have thrown at it.

When I decided to set up a home theater in my living room I figured I'd be happy with a $600 reciever so I picked up an Onkyo TX-NR646, it was perfectly fine and the external mic Accu EQ seemed really cool, but I was surprised at how coarse and seemingly limited it was. I also dug some old Adcom seperate amps out of storage and realized I'd love to run those for my front channel and sub but couldn't. This lead me to do more research to see if I could find a receiver with audio outputs and also to the raging debate between Audyssey's EQ product.
Online consensus is pretty much overwhelming that Accu EQ sucks and that the Audyssey offering trumps it, especially the MultiEQ which other receivers like Denon have.
Overall this Onkyo unit is really nice and does the job well, it has good adjustability if you don't care to get more advanced, the AccuEQ will suffice.
I ended up returning this because I wanted more, this is a very nice receiver and there is nothing wrong with it, if your budget is about $600 I don't think you can go wrong, if you want more then you'll need to spend more to get these more advanced features.

I replaced an older model Onkyo with this unit to gain 4K upscaling, the latest sound processing and for the bluetooth controls. My stereo components are in a custom A/V closet located behind our home theater seating area. Signal is sent to big screen over a custom 53 foot HDMI, but all components are in the remote closet. I use the Onkyo to control satellite signal and act as active HDMI switcher for DVD/Bluray, etc, then send the processed signal through HDMI to the viewing screen.
Bluetooth and the Onkyo app lets my iPhone control everything without an RF repeater (basically through walls, etc. Makes the 7.1 come alive!

I purchased this A-V receiver based on several parameters included my requirement for a phono input. This seriously reduced the number of candidates in this very competitive field. Setup was a bit challenging but the results were worth the extra time. Sound quality and performance are outstanding. Flexibility and 2 zone operation are available although I am not using a second zone at this time. Connectivity is likely to satisfy nearly everyone. I am very satisfied with this A-V receiver and at this price point it should be on anyone's short list of receivers to consider. Highly recommended!

I purchased this receiver after my Marantz SR5008 died. This has been a great receiver. The dual HDMI out has been a true game changer. Initially, I couldn't get any sound to go through to the second HDMI out...only video. However, I made a call to the Onkyo technical support and was immediately on the phone with a very knowledgeable rep based in Tennessee who walked me through changing a couple of settings and it started working fine. My only criticism is that the manual that comes with the receiver isn't very detailed or thorough. It's best to just download the more comprehensive manual from online.

Compared this extensively to the comparable Pioneer and Sony products. If you want both ATMOS and DTS:X decoding this is currently only available on the Onkyo. It also has multiple HDMI 2.0 interfaces and supports HDCP 2.2 - critical for displaying the coming 4k content.

My old Onkyo gave up after 6 years. So I bought this more powerful receiver for my 7.2 Onkyo THX speaker system. It is last years model but for price difference of newer model and features did not justify spending almost twice the bucks. This one is awesome. I have tried pushing the volume but chest and ears hurt above volume of 60. I like it loud, especially movies. Overall, easy set-up and just the best from the best audio/electronics store - BB. They are great about standing behind what they sell too.

replaced my previous Onkyo that fell under their extended warranty program for a failed HDMI board. Very similar features, slightly more power but functions the same. HDMI/CEC control with my Samsung is a little weird. When the TV is turned on, it switches the input over to TV automatically about 10-15 seconds later. Tried several different settings and wiring configurations and always get the same result. Not a big deal. Some will complain that the OSD for setup is boring or plain, but I like that it is simple to use. The included mic and auto setup was much better than the previous version. Only one measurement required at center of listening area, but the test tones are different.

I Wasnt even going up to best buy to purchase a receiver, but i did want to get one, and i saw this one on sale and just had to get it! 4k, 3d, wifi, 7.2 channels, has it all! You definitely want to get wifi on any receiver you purchase whether it be this one or another. I would also recommend buying banana plugs to hook up speakers, but will advise you may want to shop around for them bc they are expensive. this receiver mos def jams! its pushing enough wattage to really jam out and it hits both hi and lo marks! I havent been able to turn up to maximum yet bc it is so friggin loud! Im afraid ill break something, not in a bad way either! talk about rattling window panes!
