I have been using Yamaha Rx and Aventage series (mid-level) with Bose speakers and Polk audio sub for over 15 years. They are great for movies, I still love Yamaha but I was not 100% happy with music. Something was missing. I am not a Rock or R&B listener, I listen to classical, easy listening, fusion, instrumental etc. When one of Best Buy's Magnolia Theater persons asked me to try this Onkyo TX-NR646, I tried and fell in love with it. Oh, I have just bought a Klipsch sub-woofer and my entire family room and kitchen area is filled with music. My wife loves music but not so picky on audio stuffs like me, even she can tell the difference.

I'm very happy with the sound quality of this receiver, Onkyo products always sound great. The setup for this model can be as simple as plug-and-play or very complex depending on your willingness to explore the excellent manual and modify the setup. This model has been replaced by a newer version, and the price for this one can be very attractive for such an advanced receiver.

I purchased this product to replace an existing Onkyo receiver that was about 12 years old and still functioned beautifully but had no video switching capabilities, The new Onkyo receiver was substantially cheaper than my previous receiver and is Dolby Atmos enabled, which adds another dimension to movies. The receiver has plenty of power and will handle 4k video, with HDCP 2.2 HDMI copy protection which future proofs video switching. The receiver is full feature and is supposed to be DTS-X capable with a firmware update which the manufacture is still promising. There is also a plethora of online music options including SiriusXM, Spotify, Pandora in addition to Apple Airplay and Bluetooth connectivity for connection to phones and tablets. Now for a few Cons: the menu system is rudimentary, in the age of modern GUI the one provided is old looking. Some of the configuration items are buried and difficult to find and or understand. I had a real difficult time figuring out the HDMI passthrough feature (which allows you to watch TV without the receiver being on). The support of High Resolution sound formats is questionable, I had a tough time streaming FLAC files from my network cloud device or by attaching a flash drive with these files. Overall this is a feature packed receiver at a very reasonable price point.

I bought this to replace my Onkyo RC-360 when it started going out with the HDMI issues. What I was looking for in a new receiver was HDMI 2.0, Atmos, DTS:X. The TX-NR646 has all these features. 4K passthough from my PC to my LG 4K TV as excellent. It is currently driving 2 Polk Audio Monitor 70 towers, 10" sub, center and 2 8" in wall speakers. The only con is the menu. It is archaic.

I found this on Deal of th Day and it was worth it. It replaced my AVR7300 a Harmon Kardon Powerhouse . It runs all 7.2 channels and I even could BiAmp my front speaker. I Have all Klipsch Reffrence speakers with tremendous power capability as well. IT IS PERFECT . Plus I bluetooth my phone to it for music. I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH IT

Paired to a old Infinity SL40 set. The sound is great. Entire range is clear and bass goes deep enough and loud enough. This blows other bundled sets out of the water (comparison: samsung 2.1 sound bar and wireless speaker). Of course this setup is significantly more premium. Using it on a daily basis makes the purchase more than worth the cost.

I've been a long-time Onkyo owner through several receivers and they all served me well. When it came time to upgrade again for 4K, HDR, and Atmos, I looked for a receiver that had support for the latest standards as well as 7 rear HDMI inputs for all my game systems, PC, and other devices. This Onkyo fit the bill and received good reviews from both sites and owners. I'm primarily using the receiver for movies and games. After dialing-in the settings and sound I am very pleased with the unit and have had no issues.

My father purchased my family a skystream requiring us to update our 16 year old Harmon/Kardon receiver. After extensive internet searching we settled on the Onkyo even though some of the reviews were pretty scary. When we went into Best Buy to purchase, they had an open box one sitting on the shelf, and sin of all sins, we took it. To avoid future heartache, we purchased the extended warranty for the first time ever on a product. Installed it two weeks ago. Setup was a breeze, speaker balancing simple, and the sound is fantastic. Mind you, I am comparing it to a unit at least sixteen years old, yet we were amazed at the sounds we had never heard before. TV, stereo, dvd, and cd have all been enhanced with the Onkyo. Time will tell if the problems others have had will pop up, but right now we are more than pleased with the purchase. Buying the extended warranty will hopefully have waved a magic wand over the receiver and we will never have to use it, but hey, thats okay with me. Although I do not believe in the extended ones, better safe than sorry this time. Regards!

I thought it was good idea to finally upgrade from a 30 year old Pioneer receiver to go with with my 60 inch LG 4K TV. I was looking for a receiver that had the ability to play my IPOD and streaming music from my computer as well as good sound from the TV. I was more concerned with listening to music then theater TV. I bought a pair of Klipch's floor speakers as a start up. All I have to say is this receiver does it all! Where I live I cannot get any radio stations over the air. The tullen radio solved that issue and streaming music from IPOD via airplay was a breeze. The receiver integrates with my TV remote powers up everything, receiver, TV, Streaming media player and receiver. The only issue I have sometimes is it will switch to the streaming media player on power up instead of the cable box. Make sure you use a new 2.2 HDMI cable or you will have problems operating the volume from your TV Remote, and it will only work using the Onkyo remote I found out the hard way!

My beloved Kenwood receiver of 18 years died and after reading many reviews I decided on this one for all the features and future tech that it had. It was rated as the best sounding receiver recently as well. And with my Bose 701's and other speakers I can tell a difference. Only Con is the remote has no back light on it, when you are paying this much it should be lit.

Great receiver, easy setup and great sound.
Receiver allows for an easy setup and the sound quality is great. The bass is a little weak straight out of the box but with a little config, you can get to hit that sweet spot.
The remote is basic and just like the first gen...Receiver is on the top 10 list of best receivers of 2015 (CNET)

I bought this unit on the Deal of the Day to try out. I didn't think it would hold a candle to my previous flagship model Onkyo.
Immediately after hooking it up, I knew that I wasn't going to return it. The set up mic process was or thorough and the sound quality was much warmer.
I really like the ability to pass HDMI signal with the receiver off. I can also send HDMI signal to two devices at the same time. That was optimal for my set up with both an LCD TV and a projector in the same room.
It doesn't do video upscaling but I don't really miss that feature. The only issue I have is that every once in a while the auto sound format switching takes some time and I may lose a few seconds of audio. This only seems to happen with commercials and it's very infrequent so it doesn't really bother me. Overall this is an incredible unit for the money.
I love the Bluetooth feature too!
