Excellent value on an Onkyo receiver if you can still get your hands on this model. The successor to this model appeared to offer no notable improvements so getting a model that is a year or two older is a no brainer. Have owned for about 15 months now.

Initially we were using Sony 5.1. The surround sound was very bad and we thought of changing speakers. During thanksgiving sales we found this and purchased to try. Our initial analysis were wrong. Speakers were good and issue with Sony receiver. Now we are enjoying the music and movies.

This was an upgrade in order to get Dolby Atmos in my home theater family room. Setup was easy. It does on screen instructions and the auto EQ process (watch out, it’s a Loud process) has had great results. And the way it turns on and off automatically with my Sony tv and Apple TV is great!

I bought this receiver as a replacement for my 15+ year old Onkyo 706 that finally died. This review is a comparison of this receiver vs. my previous receivers (Onkyo 706 and a Yamaha). Things I liked: 1) It was literally a drop in replacement for my 706 in my audio system. 2) Setup was easy. 3) Sound as a home theatre receiver is very good. 4) Cost/Value - Did research and this receiver has a lot of value. Things I dislike: 1) Audio quality when playing straight music is lacking depth. Worse than my Onkyo 706 and Yamaha in my opinion. I'm using older Polk Audio floor speakers. 2) Less preset audio settings than my Onkyo 706.

This receiver is truly amazing. It gives such great quality dimension to the movie experience. I grabbed a bunch of Klipsch speakers to go with it, so that doesn't hurt. I honestly use it mostly for my turntable though. Nothing like blasting some music over this beast, I'll tell you.

I've had this reciever for approximately 3 weeks....it is currently running a polk audio T series 5.0 surround system as I haven't added a subwoofer yet ( ahem bestbuy, waiting on that klipsch special) .....even without the sub movies are incredible.....screened "First Man" , "Rogue one" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" so far......simply amazing......the sound is incredibly clean even at very high volume. Also I find this reciever very intuitive to use with its initial setup features and on screen GUI......Well done ONKYO

I bought this to pair with my Samsung television. I have in ceiling speakers using the 5.2 diagram. The sound and balance are game changers, for normal watching I can leave at a relatively low volume And comfortably hear the tv, as well as most of the ambient noise. Movies, wow!!! the sound quality pulls me right in!!!

Very happy with this. I’ve never had an amplifier before but set this up in my man cave and it’s perfect. I have 3 tvs and subs set up to this and 12 speakers, all sound and work great!

Not my first onkyo reciver and won't be my last. Bought on sale and for the price was pleasantly surprised with all the features you get. Dolby atmos and enough power to push all my speakers 5.2.2 setup. Sounds really good.

This receiver makes my surround sound bose speakers sound amazing. The reciever’s built-in wi-fi allows you to play music from your iPhone and use apps like pandora and YouTube. Bluetooth capability works great as well. Very pleased with this new receiver. Dual zone 2 allows you to play different source in a different room.

Great Sound, Great Amp, Great App, Too Much?

This amp sounds great!! Plays music from Apple Airplay in great detail and better than I have ever heard. I use the Zone B speakers setup for a 2nd set of speakers in my kitchen. You can have 2 different sources playing in each zone or the same thing. The only issue with this is if you are sending source music via Air Play you control the volume in Zone A (main) with the stereos volume or your Apple device volume. Zone B volume is controlled by the Onkyo app. If you send music via Bluetooth then your sending device will control the volume for both zones. My only issue with this amp so far is the Bluetooth and Air Play functionality. It drops out some time (about 4 times so far) and your music will look like it is playing on your device and you are connected to the amp but nothing is coming out of the amp. I have to power off the amp completely (not put in standby) to get it all working again. That is why my title says Too Much? Maybe we putting too much functionality into these devices?? Other than that I love this amp. The Onkyo app works great and allows you to turn on the amp and start playing music from your phone.

This receiver has a lot of nice features and has a good amount of power to let you appreciate it through your speakers. The net functions don't always work perfectly ( some freezing) but it has gotten better since the beginning. Other than that it has worked perfectly.

This receiver is pretty good. Good power and sound. I do not like that I have to turn the receiver on and off to switch between inputs when I don’t want the audio coming out of the receiver. Also my audio will not come out of the receiver for any Apps played through the TV

I had to replace my Onkyo TSXV7M amp. I bought it new in 1987 and it finally went kaput. I figured why not give Onkyo another shot after having such good luck with the last one. I was not disappointed! Awesome sound, awesome options. I almost wish in bought it sooner. Movies really sound great!

I purchased this receiver 2 months ago when it was on sale for $249 and I'm very happy it. I have a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup in my media room. My tower and height speakers are 30 year old Hitachi. I purchased a Sony subwoofer and Polk rear speakers around $250 from BB on sale a week after getting the Onkyo TX-NR686. I have an Apple TV 4K, Roku Ultra, Fire Stick 4K, Chromecast 4K and PS3 plugged in the HDMI ports of the receiver. I hope to upgrade my 5 year old Vizio non HDR 4K TV in the fall on sale. It doesn't take a lot of money to build a Home Theater system. Just wait for a sale, price match everything, and work within your budget. My only issue with the Onkyo TX-NR686 in the wireless WIFI loses connection each day. I don't know if it's my network or something else. I may have to hard wire to the receiver. This model is discontinued but I highly recommend this or the next model.

I liked the in-store demo unit so I bought one. LOL The ease of setting up my speakers and overall listening style was SUPER easy for me. I didn't really need the manual to configure the whole setup. While not an extensive home theater I was able to set the speakers up and added a subwoofer. This thing rocks!!

Nice unit, used to replace my old one, also an Onkyo, that would not easily work with an Apple TV4. This one does port audio thru the HDMI unlike my old one. One thing to watch is that does NOT work with an unpowered sub. You have to have a powered sub. That was a $100 mistake for me!

Easy to set up. The included microphone for setting up the speakers was dead on accurate. Got perfect balance the first time. My only nit - the built in Bluetooth won't connect to an external wireless speaker. It is only for inputting a signal from a cell phone, etc.

Plenty of jacks of various types enabling being able to hook up more equipment than originally planned. It's all working with little need to troubleshoot during the initial setup process. Hopefully it will last for more than a decade like the older Onkyo it replaced.
