So I bought a Onkyo receiver from a store. I had a really nice gentleman do a great job selling me on the features and power. However, 3 weeks later the receiver started acting up so I went online and saw others had this problem and there was a recommendation to reset it. It worked for another 3 weeks. I had the receiver for 6 weeks and now it is doing it more. Called Best Buy and the person who talked to me was rude. It is no wonder why they only have a 14 day return window because they know it will last for that time frame. Best Buy doesn’t support after a product has a problem and they will continue to sell it.

So, this thing is probably being returned. I'm "upgrading" from a Yamaha RX-V677, which does everything here except for Atmos, proper 4K HDR passthru, and obviously THX processing. I'm old enough for THX branding to still hold an air of prestige, so I was glad to finally be able to have access to that. The THX Music mode is a revelation! Robust, active, and directional use of the surround channels, as well as very clear separation up front along with some serious low-end. It's to DPLii Music was to regular DPL. Zone 2 functionality has proven fickle; on the plus side, zone 2 playback includes what's being transmitted via AirPlay (something the Yamaha did not do.) It also claims to be able to push content from SPDIF (optical digital) inputs to zone 2 as well, but I could not get that to work. Oh, and then the AirPlay functionality kinda "froze up" and I could not get it to a.) not realize that "Song X" was no longer playing or b.) have anything else find it on the network—including the remote app. I redid the network connection and everything, but no dice. Strike one. The GUI combined with the layout of the remote is a friggin' disaster; clunky and slow to respond. You have to navigate forward with arrow keys, but need to use "return" to go back a menu level. It's stupid. Additionally, the remote offers very little in the way of detail when attempting to adjust sound modes; you just press "music" repeatedly until you land on the right one. The display of the unit only shows the input selected; you have to use the "info" button on the remote to see the audio processing being used (or get up close and look at the itty bitty indicators on the unit.) Strike two. The main reason I got this was to be able to simplify my inputs/outputs. The Yamaha did not passthru 4K HDR content (it was released just before the format was fully settled on) from my Apple TV 4K (and forthcoming 4K UHD Blue-Ray player). All specs for this indicate that it is Dolby Vision capable. THIS RECEIVER DOES NOT PASS THRU 4K DOLBY VISION from the Apple TV. Apparently this is a known and ongoing issue between Apple and Onkyo that I obviously wouldn't have known about prior to encountering the problem. HDR is limited to HDR 10. I've read that other devices (such as disc players) can pass through with no problem, so I will confirm that when I receive my player. But either way, the lack of Dolby Vision when using my primary streaming device is kind of a deal breaker. Strike three. This is my first deviation from Yamaha in over 20 years; lesson learned. :-\

I purchased this unit because I was told it would support the Sonos wireless speakers without the Sonos application box. It turns out it does not. I wrote a previous review and receive no response. I would recommend a component but I would caution About sales expertise.

It’s great with my cable, Apple TV, PS4 and 4K bluray player. Concern is that I am not getting surrounded sound when using Certain TV Apps like VUDU. Might be doing something incorrectly, but haven’t been able to figure that out.

Bought this receiver as an upgrade to a 8 year old Yamaha RX-V371 after upgrading to a 4K TV. The specs and the majority of the reviews said that this should be a solid upgrade for the money. For the first year I was pleased with the performance. The only issue I had was that it would sometimes randomly power itself on after I turned it off. After a year it would sometimes power up and have picture but no audio. Power the unit down wait a minute to restart and everything would work fine again. This would happen randomly for the next several months getting more and more frequent. Finally one day I turn it on and TV says it can't find a source, so now I have nothing. I tried power cycling and changing HDMI cable with no luck. So I did a factory reset on the unit, but could not complete the initial setup because it will not output a signal to my TV. Now I have a 2 year old unit that is a brick. I hooked up the old Yamaha and am running again without the 4K passthrough. Googling the model number revealed others with HDMI board issues, but no parts available. Likely just bad timing due to the pandemic, but still no bueno for the consumer.

    Home Theater Sound

This Onkyo receiver features THX Certified Select theater-inspired sound, giving you the ability to create a home theater experience reminiscent of being in an actual movie theater environment. So, to break this down ... THX (which assuredly is familiar to most) amplifies the audio, giving you theater levels of surround sound. Dynamic Audio Amplification filters the sound for superior clarity and stereo performance, eliminating high-frequency distortion. Dolby Atmos provides an immersive listening environment, filling the room with clear, realistic sound. HDMI outputs let you connect 4K TVs to this Onkyo TX-NR686 7.2ch AV Receiver for bright, color-rich visuals. Using the AccuEQ mic, allows the receiver to guide you through the setup procedure, from speaker calibration to network connection. With the receiver’s GUI (Graphical User Interface) you can easily connect speakers, media devices, streaming services, and control multi-room management of audio throughout your home. Rest assured, there are enough connections on this Onkyo receiver for just about every electronic device you might want or own. And of course, there’s an app. Among other things, the Onkyo Controller App enables you to customize your connected speaker groupings. This Onkyo receiver delivers smooth music streaming through popular built-in services. Bluetooth technology lets you play music from all your mobile devices, laptops, PCs, wirelessly. Supplied accessories include: - Speaker setup microphone - Remote control, with batteries - Indoor FM antenna - AM loop antenna - Quick Start Guide and Basic Manual Handy receiver features: - Quick setup guide via the GUI (graphical user interface) - Easy connection diagram on the rear panel - 3-mode display dimmers - 40 FM/AM preset channels - Tone controls - bass/treble, for front L/R channels Something I found particularly useful, was having an HDMI connection right there in front, saving the hassle of fiddling around behind the receiver when you simply want to quickly connect, for example, a video camera or gaming console. Pairing this Onkyo receiver with my new Klipsch speakers, created a home theater experience which was not only fun to play around with, but was fairly simple to set up and customize for my desired entertainment needs.

I bought this unit because I wanted Bluetooth capability with good sound quality. The sound quality is good, but the Bluetooth connectivity is intermittent. When it works it's great but after only owning it for a month it would stop working periodically. The unit would show it connects to my iPhone but the music would not transfer. I would try to connect other devices but none would work. A few days later it would work again, but for no apparent reason. Then later it would not. Very disappointing.

From the start, this Onkyo is very attractive and looks very nice on the shelf. Let’s face it, that is the first thing we all look at when we go to buys something, especially when you are going to spend around $400-$500 for something. Many of them look the same, and there are varying degrees of features for the price you are willing to pay. For this model of receiver, I think it is a good balance of value for your money. First thing I look at is the number of ports the receiver has. Aside from the normal speaker ports (center, front, surround, etc) it has seven HDMI outputs which I thought was really nice being I wanted something to run an entire entertainment center. You can read about the specs on this device and see if it will meet your needs as far as watts per channel and the required ports you need. It is more than capable of taking care of the high end speakers you have and more. Personally, I used this in my man cave. I have a center speaker, two floor speakers, two book shelf speakers, open subwoofer, and two floor speakers running off this receiver. It is more than capable of handling the load from these speakers. What I care about is hearing the action on TV good as I can see the action before my eyes. I have a 4K TV hooked to this system and they work seamlessly together. It was not hard connecting them since as I mentioned this device has the HDMI inputs and outputs (or as they call it pass through) making the connection easy to complete. I am still experimenting with the calibration of the equalizer, but the presets I have using the speaker set up I have are sounding awesome so far. At high volumes (as far as I am willing to turn it up) I have not noticed any notable distortion yet. The sound is crisp, clean and the bass is strong as well. The coolest part of this receiver is its ability to connect to the internet and some of the more popular music apps like Spotify, Amazon Music and Pandora. I tend to use Pandora a lot, and I love that I can connect to it via this Onkyo receiver. At the end of the day, I highly recommend this to the above average audiophile that likes a quality sound without breaking the budget with some of the other brands. I would definitely buy this again if I needed another receiver. It’s a great product and it’s worth a look if you are in the market for a new receiver.

I upgraded my home theater system and purchased this receiver on the advice of the sales person. After all was setup I was t not thrilled with the sound. This receiver replaced an old JVC RX-778VBK. I did not believe I was upgrading based on what I was hearing. I returned it and purchased a Yamaha RX-A780. The Yamaha was worlds better than both the old system (surround sound) and the Onkyo (all around).

Living in an apartment, I wasn't 100% sure I'd really be able to bump up from using soundbars for years to a full fledged surround system with 8 speakers. So glad I took the chance. I can blast when the neighbors aren't around and still get amazing sound at quiet levels. Setting up took me a bit because I wasn't used to all the new terminology but it was pretty straight forward. I wanted to use banana plugs on everything but they didn't arrive in time so I twisted all the wires in to the receiver and the speakers. Wasn't too bad a task but I'll switch them over one of these days. The Dolby Atmos was really what I was after with this as I've heard so much about it but had never experienced it. I have a ton of movies that support it and the first one I tried out was Stephen King's "It" "It" was amazing in Atmos. Sound came from everywhere. It's hard to believe they can actually place each sound where they want it now and it is truly incredible to experience. Next up was Saving Private Ryan and that opening scene of them landing on the beach was mind blowing. The HDMI 4k pass-through worked like a charm right away. I didn't need to tweak or change anything around. Everything went fine and works flawlessly. I really like the On Screen Display. There are a bunch of options and things to tweak and play around with. I haven't spent a whole lot of time playing around in there yet other then setting the distance from the couch I sit on to each speaker. I'm really happy with how things defaulted too but I'll eventually mess around to make it even better. Can't recommend this one enough. I really don't have any other receivers to compare it with as I've just been using sound bars for the past several years. But this thing surely couldn't disappoint any one at all. 5 stars only cause I couldn't give it more :)
