Not Worth it as main receiver
||Posted . Owned for 9 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sound Quality is great, decent options. However maybe I received a faulty unit. Out of my Marantz for my main system and Denon for my Garage. This unit has been the most Pain in the butt to work with. Hdmi out menu will not display on my tv or even a monitor. Very difficult to navigate settings on the tiny screen. Can't get it to connect on the app. Even after spending 30 mins getting, it to connect to my network. Every time I shut it off, it goes into a setup phase. I cannot do anything about since I can't see the menu. Cuts the audio off till I back out of it with the remote. I have a protection plan on it, however I don't want it sent out and have to wait for 3 weeks for it possibly to be fixed. I understand the process since i worked for GeekSquad for 7 years.

Good receiver quality and installation.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Good design, sound performance very good. Initially the unit set-up was a bit confusing, but Geek Squad installer did an excellent job in the installation and providing me with operating instructions. He asked about our preferences and then set up the receiver to accommodate our requirements.

Our second Onkyo
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is our second Onkyo. We have it powering a 5.1 system at the moment although we bought it to also power 2 wired speakers on our back porch. So far we haven't been able to get these to function. Not sure what the issue is but others report difficulties as well. Will have to dig deeper as every problem has a solution. I don't believe it's the unit.

Onkyo king
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I must say that I haven't open the box as of yet. I'm anticipating opening the box during the Christmas Holiday. However, I have owned an Onkyo for over 30 years and it has never failed me in delivering high quality sounds. I'm quite sure I'll experience the same results soon. I have also gotten rave reviews from others owners.

OK when it works, which is seldom
||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had home theatre/AVR's since my first surround sound Yamaha back in the 'dark ages' prior to HDMI cables. Since then I have had 2 Yamaha AVRs, 1 Bose, 1 Denon and 1 Onkyo -- The Onkyo was the worst A-V purchase decision I have ever made, due mostly to reading the wrong reviews, and choosing a lower priced unit since I had to replace my Denon that was fried by a lightning strike in the early days of the first 2020 COVID-19 shut-downs. When I setup the TX-NR696, things went well for a while. Then my LG OLED TV (purchased at same time from BB) had a software update. Guess what? The Onkyo no longer would pass through the audio channels using eARC or any other HDMI combo; yes, I tried the reset function and also selectively powering off all components and then bringing them back online with TV first followed by the AVR. I tried all of Onkyo's trouble-shooting tips related to sound; I called customer service and spent more than 2 hours trying everything they suggested in three calls since they kept disconnecting me. I finally decided to go the reset-to-factory-original-settings route and had to redo all my sound field adjustments--the whole process took about 1.5 hours to get things back up and running--I did this on my own since customer service was not helpful that day. Problem solved--that is, until the next software update. Or the next power outage. Did I forget to mention the power issue before? Here goes: this Onkyo model doesn't 'like' being shutdown by a blackout, even though mains power goes through a top-rated and durable Tripp Lite 'Isobar' surge protector and the power loss in no way adversely affected the unit's performance except for the fact that the AVR loses its ability to pass audio signals through until you blank everything back to factory original settings and start over again with yet another setup. Then Onkyo sent through a software update late last week, and guess what? Yep. No sound pass through--AGAIN. I then spent more time with tech support last week and all they could advise (after having me try everything else,) was suggesting I needed a new HDMI cable -- Really? That's funny, because the HDMI cable I am using was in service for less than a year (with a 3 year warranty,) and it worked just fine until Onkyo sent through a firmware update; it is rated for 8K (while the Onkyo is 4K) and has a solid copper core -- Can a firmware update fry a top-notch HDMI cable? I don't think so. And I haven't even mentioned that when I change from video (the TV selection option) to something else, like listening to Radio (tuner), I get to join the reset circus all over again when I want to go back to watching home theatre just because I switched from TV to Radio...Stay away from this model; I know Onkyo makes some good products, but this model is not one of them--definitely do not buy anything from them made in 2019 or 2020. Before buying, speak with a qualified sales rep--Best Buy has good people, or read tons of reviews, specifically checking for problems associated with this model. Stay away from the TX-NR696 or any model associated with Onkyo's dreaded HDMI chip/board issues, or the DSP chip issue, or the DAC issues you may also read about online. Me? I bought a Yamaha to replace this Onkyo 'paperweight' and wish I had never left that brand to begin with -- Lesson learned. BTW: The Yamaha system has since been installed and it works fine -- And yes, I'm still using the 'old' HDMI cable through the TV's same eARC port that Onkyo suggested might be bad; the cable, TV and everything else works just fine since switching back to Yamaha.

Great company and great receiver.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This receiver can do everything. If there's any negatives, there's too many features! It has linked to out phones easily, casts audio from our phones or Amazon accounts. The connections were super easy and with numerous inputs it was easy to set up. Con: the remote is not programmable to be universal with all of the components plugged into it. We ended up buying the Logitech Universal.
