Although the Home button is covered, my phone had no issues recognizing my Touch ID. I have dropped my phone numerous times since putting on the OtterBox Defender case, and both my phone and the case are still in perfect condition.
I would recommend this to a friend bought to protect does great.

That will protect the front. Remove the Otter Box clear shield (The Verizon Rep popped it off. They are WELL AWARE of this issue with the Otter Box Defender.) Just keep the rest of the Otter Box rubber back and frame on the phone,

Mine has stood up to drops, spills, laying in a puddle of water, and even being run over by my car tire. This one I purchased for my wife since her previous case was not so adept at protecting the phone.

The phone still fits in my hand & all the compartments of my purse easily (not too bulky). The only negative for me, & it's minor, is opening the case slot each time I need to charge the phone & remembering to close it to protect the connection.
