A Smart Ring Worth Wearing Every Day

The Oura Ring 5 is one of those products I wasn't sure I needed until I started using it. I've followed the smart ring space for a while but had never taken the plunge until now. As someone who has worn fitness smartwatches for well over a decade, I was admittedly skeptical that a smart ring could offer much beyond what my watch already provides. After a few weeks, I've come to appreciate that it complements a smartwatch rather than replacing one. The first thing that stood out was the design. I went with the Stealth finish, and the matte black coating looks fantastic. It has an understated, modern appearance that doesn't immediately scream "tech gadget." It's also extremely comfortable. After the first day or two, I mostly forgot I was wearing it. I was initially concerned about scratching it during everyday use, but after several weeks of wearing it while working, exercising, and doing chores and yardwork around the house, it still looks nearly new. Sleep tracking has easily become my favorite feature. I've always hated the feeling of sleeping while wearing a smartwatch, so I usually ended up sacrificing sleep data for comfort. The Oura Ring solves that problem. It's comfortable enough that I don't notice it overnight, and waking up to detailed sleep metrics each morning has been genuinely useful. It also automatically detects many activities throughout the day. Since the Oura Ring uses your phone's GPS for route tracking, I still preferred using my smartwatch for runs and rides when I wasn't carrying my phone. Activity detection was generally very accurate, though I occasionally had to make small edits. For example, one of my runs was automatically detected, but the workout ended a little earlier than it should have, resulting in a slightly shorter recorded distance. Fortunately, making minor corrections in the app was quick and easy. For me, the Oura Ring fits naturally alongside a smartwatch. I still rely on my watch for GPS tracking during runs and rides when I leave my phone behind, but the ring is capable of tracking many of the same metrics, including sleep, activity, and heart rate. If you're already invested in a smartwatch ecosystem, the Oura Ring adds a level of comfort and insight that's hard to replicate with a watch alone. I normally dislike recurring subscription fees, but Oura's membership includes enough meaningful insights and historical trends that I quickly found it worthwhile, and I plan to keep the subscription for the long haul. The app is clean, easy to navigate, and does a great job presenting your health data in a way that's actually useful rather than overwhelming. Battery life has also been excellent. Unlike my smartwatch, which I charge every night, the Oura Ring lasts for several days before needing to be topped off. The app also provides helpful reminders when the battery starts getting low, so I never found myself unexpectedly running out of charge. The included wireless charger is compact, fast, and easy to leave on a nightstand or desk. I also appreciated never having to worry about water damage. I've worn it swimming multiple times without giving it a second thought, and it has performed flawlessly. Overall, the Oura Ring 5 is a comfortable, well-built health tracker that fits naturally into everyday life. The excellent sleep tracking, thoughtful app experience, long battery life, and premium design make it an outstanding companion for smartwatch users, while also serving as a capable standalone tracker for anyone who wants detailed health insights without wearing a watch around the clock.

I’ve been wearing a smart ring for the past few years and, in my opinion, have found that it’s one of the most convenient and comfortable ways to keep tabs on my health and fitness tracking versus other options such as a watch. Being that it has been several years since I invested in a smart ring, I decided it was time for an upgrade and replacement to catch up to the latest technology. I switched from a different brand to the newest edition of the Oura Ring, the Oura Ring 5, because it was recommended by others at our gym that have Oura Rings and they swear by it. After initially charging the ring, it was very easy to set up using the smart phone app, creating an account and entering my personal information so the ring and app companion could get a better understanding of my personal details such as my age, weight, height, activity level, etc. and use that information to make user specific recommendations throughout each day, week, month, etc. Upon setting up your account, it does give you a free trial of their upgraded tracking and AI features which I also strongly recommend after using it for a little over a week. The ring is so lightweight and comfortable that I forget I’m wearing it most of the time. Unlike a smartwatch, I never feel the need to take it off, especially at night, which means my data is much more consistent. The battery life is great, lasting about a full week on a single charge using the included charging dock, therefore I don’t find myself having to charge it nearly as often as my smart watch. The app is easy to understand and gives meaningful insights instead of overwhelming me with information. Everything feels personalized and genuinely useful. It even scored my heart age and tracks my cycle, all in one easy to use app. The sleep tracking is incredibly detailed and fascinating to wake up every morning and see exactly how well my body recovered overnight. I love that it doesn’t just give me numbers, the AI features help me understand how my sleep, stress, activity, and recovery all work together. One of my favorite features is the Readiness Score that helps me decide whether I should push myself in the gym or give my body a little extra recovery; I’ve found myself listening to my body much more because of it. As someone taking vitamins and medications, including GLP-1 medication, I appreciate how the software and AI in the app takes my personal information combining it with my sleep, activity, stress, etc. to provide me a better understanding of my overall wellness. Seeing those trends and numbers over the past week combined with the AI features has been eye opening and motivating. If you’re looking for a wearable that’s focused on improving your health rather than just counting steps or sending notifications, I highly recommend the Oura Ring 5 along with their subscription service for more inclined health and fitness tracking. For me, it’s become something I wear all day, every single day, and it’s completely changed the way I not only understand my health and body but use the recommendations the software gives me to make adjustments throughout my busy days.

    The Ultimate Tiny Health Tracker

This is my first Oura Ring but not my first smart ring. Before this Oura Ring, I used a ring from a close competitor. I decided to wear both for a week to compare the data. It felt strange wearing both, especially on fingers that are right by each other. Regardless, I found this to be the best way to obtain accurate data from both rings. While I will have some comparisons in this review, this will mostly be about the Oura Ring 5. *TLDR at the bottom ================= IN THE BOX/SET-UP: The Oura Ring 5 comes in a small white box. Nothing particular stands out from the unboxing experience. It was pretty simple, and there is nothing wrong with that. There is a charger and some documentation in the box. But you need to provide your own charging cable, as there is no USB-C cable included. Set up is quick. Download the Oura app, and the app will walk you through the setup. This took about 5-10 minutes. ================= RING FIT, DESIGN, DURABILITY: In terms of fit, I chose a size that was snug but not tight. Ideally, you want a size where the ring doesn’t move around on your finger. While the ring fits great, I did find that with sweaty hands, the ring tends to spin on my finger. It's worse when you wear gloves. This does create inaccurate data, but it's not a dealbreaker as my hands aren’t sweaty all the time. But overall, the fit is comfortable. It almost feels like I’m not wearing anything. This is the smallest smart ring yet. As I was unboxing the ring, I was amazed by how tiny the ring was. Compared to my previous smart ring (see pictures), it is significantly smaller. Holding things feel much more natural compared to my previous ring. Along with the tiny size, the ring feels like you’re holding air. It really is that light. If the ring was the same color as my skin, I think it would certainly blend in. On the inside of the ring, there are several sensors, with the bulk of them on one side. There are 2 photodetectors, 2 triple LEDs(red, green, IR), a temperature sensor, and an accelerometer. There is also a tiny mark on the outside that indicates the direction the ring should be worn (palm side of the hand). I have worn this ring for about two weeks now. I’ve gone on runs, strength trained, worked and washed my car, helped someone move, and much more. After doing all of this, there isn’t a single scratch on it. This ring is extremely durable. The ring is made with a fully titanium design with a superhard PVD(physical vapor deposition) coating. While it was able to withstand everything I did these past two weeks, I am curious how durable the ring is over time. My old smart ring was also fully titanium but with a tungsten carbide carbon coating. About a year and a half later, the ring has held up, but the coating on the outer edges is starting to rub off (palm side). This Oura ring won’t last forever, but I am curious if this Oura ring will experience the same fate about a year from now. ================= OURA APP: As someone who’s never used the Oura app, I can confidently say it has a great UI. The app is easy to navigate, and the information you need is available as soon as you open the app. Do note that early on data will be limited. Some data will be available the next day. But there is data such as your Body Clock data that won’t be ready until day 90. There is a lot of information, but I will cover the main stuff. Readiness Score: The readiness score is a score that shows how ready you are for the day. There is a lot of stuff that contributes to this score, like your resting heart rate, HRV balance, sleep, and activity balance. Activity Score: This score measures your activity levels. It tells you if you are training frequently, your recovery time, how many alerts you received for inactivity, and even your total calorie burn. Sleep Score: This is one of the main reasons I started using a smart ring. To improve my terrible sleep schedule! What I find seriously impressive is how accurate the sleep/wake up times are. Some other information you get is total sleep(for the night), deep sleep, and timing. Heart Rate: The heart rate tab is useful. It tells your heart rate when you're sleeping, when doing activities, and even when you’re stressed. It lays out the data in a nice line graph so you can see your heart rate throughout the day. Vitals: The Vitals tab is filled with quick snippets of your health, recommendations, and alerts. For example, under the sleep tab, there is a sleep debt that lets you know how much sleep you need. Under the readiness tab, there is the Symptom Radar. Although nothing in particular has come up for me, this tells you if your body needs extra care. This can be due to lack of rest, the cold, or severe stress. There is so much more to the app that I couldn’t cover. There is stuff about measuring blood oxygen levels, enabling rest mode (for those all-day rest days), meal tracking, and much more. The app also informs you when there are new software updates. But if you are serious about your physical health, the Oura app will give you plenty of information to improve and maintain your health. ================= MY 1 WEEK OF USE: As I said in the beginning, I wore my old smart ring with this Oura Ring for the week. My old ring provides about the same information as my Oura one. The question is, which one is more accurate? This question is tougher to answer without something else tracking these health metrics, like a smart watch, which I don’t own. But I did my best to wear the rings consistently and on the same fingers (one on index, the other on middle). I strength trained a lot with this ring. Some exercises were harder to perform than others, but overall, you can work out with the ring on. Anytime I worked out, I turned on the live activity feature, which is a nifty feature that tracks your heart rate, active calorie burn, and the zones (1-5 zones) your heart rate was in. My older ring is significantly thicker, so gripping dumbbells and barbells felt much more uncomfortable. On the other end, I was able to comfortably deadlift with the Oura ring. But with barbells that have more aggressive khurling or heavy dumbbells, you start to feel more discomfort. Especially with row movements that require significant grip strength. I do recommend a protective cover if you plan to work out with the ring, as over time the khurling can start to wear on the coating. The ring is water resistant, so there is no need to take it off when doing anything with water. When it comes to sleep, it does have accurate/sleep wake times that align with my sleep time and alarm. It is significantly more accurate compared to my previous ring. There was about a 30-minute average difference between my old ring and Oura ring. This Oura also does a better job of tracking your time in bed, which can probably be due to either the accelerometer or the temperature sensor. I love how the ring syncs with the app throughout the day. But this only works if your Bluetooth is on. My older ring required that the app be open for the data to sync. But you don’t need your phone with you the entire time for the data to sync. The ring has a memory capacity of 3 days of data storage. Which is on the shorter side and much less compared to the previous gen, which stored data for up to one week. My older ring also was able to store data for about 6-8 days. In terms of battery life, it’s honestly great. On a full charge, it lasted about 8 days. Of course, over time, this battery life will diminish. But if I can get about a week of battery towards the end of this ring’s life cycle, that’d be awesome. Now I will cover items that my older ring does better than the Oura Ring 5. One thing that my older ring does better than this one is location reporting. I hope I don’t lose the Oura Ring, as the location is more inaccurate than accurate. It's worse when you’re in an urban area. The app has a difficult time pinpointing the exact address that the ring is located at, which my older ring did do a better job at. Another feature that my older ring performed better in is reporting when you should move because of the lack of activity. I WFH a couple of times per week, and when there was a long time of inactivity, my older ring would consistently let me know to move. While the Oura ring does send push notifications of inactivity, these are less consistent. ================= CONCLUSION/TLDR: Overall, this is an excellent upgrade from my previous ring. Location accuracy and lack of push notifications aside, this ring excels in reporting more accurate health metrics compared to my previous ring. If you are someone who is looking to take control of their fitness, sleep, and overall health, the Oura Ring is an excellent piece of wearable tech. You will get useful information like a sleep, activity, and readiness score, which tells you how ready you are for the day. This ring does require a subscription, compared to my previous ring that was a one-time upfront cost. But if you value data accuracy and constant innovation, Oura does an excellent job with that. I wholeheartedly recommend this smart ring!
