Welcome back, Panasonic!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've always been a fan of Panasonic products- I owed several Panasonic TV's prior to the death of the plasma format, and seemingly the death of Panasonic's US presence. It's a shame that Panasonic's representation here is so minuscule. Good luck buying a 2016 Panasonic TV retail in the states. That said, Panasonic has a winner here in their flagship UHD player, the DMP-UB900. With Sony dragging their feet on releasing a player (no UHD on PS4 Pro???), and Samsung releasing an underwhelming model, the UBD-K8500, Panasonic is far and away the best current option. I purchased the Samsung player on two occasions. Both players were not up to par. I was having consistent lip sync issues, especially on streaming content with Netflix and Amazon. Further, the video processing on the Samsung, while good at times, was unacceptably poor at others. Google the Star Wars Han Solo/Kylo Ren confrontation for a prime example of poor Samsung processing. Now onto the Panny. I'll start with the bad: The price is a bit steep at $700. This will understandably turn off a lot of potential early adopters. Also, I wish the onboard operating speed of the unit was a little snappier. It's fine when setting up player preferences, but a bit laggy on others. For example, when rewinding, fast forwarding, or skipping chapters on Blu Ray/UHD, or when navigating the Netflix/Amazon menus, you wish this premium player's navigation speed was a bit more refined. Now the good: I have put this player through its paces for two weeks across every format it can play, and I can say with confidence, this player delivers the best picture and sound I've ever experienced on a video media player. I'm pairing the Panny with a Sony XBR65X950B, which is a 4k set without HDR, so I'm not getting the full UHD experience, but I'm nevertheless smitten with the results. I watched The Revenant in UHD, and the picture was flawlessly clean and lifelike. Blu rays look amazing, close to UHD quality, and DVD's are upconverted to HD resolution very admirably. I also do a lot of HD streaming on both Amazon and Netflix, and I must say, this is the best looking HD streamer I have seen to this point. While my Roku 4 has zippier operating speeds, it's over-saturated picture does not compare to the Panny. Despite some sluggishness with the Panny while operating streaming menus, I have no reservations whatsoever about using this as my go-to streaming device. Finally, the unit itself is on the larger side, but is a very handsome piece of home theatre. The entire unit (front panel, top, sides) has a high quality glossy plastic feel to it. IMO, this is the most consistently excellent media/streaming player available. The price is high, but will undoubtedly drop in the near future. When it does, this will be one heck of a bargain!

8 bit or 12 bit
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The quality of this player is outstanding, from the finish to the remote, it not only looks great but feels great. Once hooked up and all it is an outstanding player. But for the 700 bucks...hmm.. I was expecting better. Here's where I decided it wasn't worth the penny. As you may or may not know, this player will ONLY output at 4:4:4 8 bit or 12 bit OR 4:2:0 8 bit or 12 bit.. now that's as far as 4k uhd goes. If you own a tv that can display a 12 bit panel GREAT this player is for you! But if you are like me who owns an LG OLED10 BIT panel, than you're screwed cuz there is NO option in the player's options to set it to output 10 bit instead of 8 or 12. Now 12 bit is not better if your tv is not compatible with it. I loved everything else about it.. it's just for that price I want my player to play 10 bit colors not 8 bit! Under the 12 bit option even blurays look way better. Gonna down grade to the Samsung so it can upgrade me to 10 bit, let's see how it goes.

Over priced
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love the picture and sound from this player but the apps, connectivity and support are absolutely terrible. It no longer functions with my Onkyo receiver and I can no longer use my Samsung universal remote to control it. I wish the software was different and or updated by Panasonic to stay relevant.

Worth every penney
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Let me start by saying I rarely review anything, but this 4k player warrants my praise. I have a 2 1/2 year old Sony 4k TV, bought just before HDR, or High Dynamic Range was introduced. I bought the Samsung 4k player because many reviews stated that all you needed to do was make video setting adjustments and that gave a stunning picture. That was wrong. No matter what I did, the color and contrast was way off, and blacks looked the most horrible. Adjusting the gamma and the backlight made some, but not enough difference. It just seemed to me that HDR, as wonderful as it is, was just a way to screw those of us without the newest 4k set. This Panasonic player fixed that, with one setting selection. It allows you to select non HDR when you have a non HDR set, and it looks brilliant. I am in the process of re-watching my 4k blu-ray discs. There was a scene in fantastic 4, when Reed saw Ben for the first time at the base, and with my Samsung, since the scene was so dark, I could not even see Ben, it was just a purple blob. Now, I can see Ben clearly, and this is just one of a few dozen examples of the superiority of this player. the upconverted Blu-Ray to 4k is better too, with more lifelike colors, especially the reds and oranges. This player also looks better, with the ugly alloy undercarriage of the Samsung visible from the front profile (which is mysteriously cropped out of sales photos) this player is beautiful, and what a dvd player should look like. Non-HDR functionality, better picture, better upconversion, better look, and THX certified to boot. You get what you pay for. 700 is a stiff price to pay to be sure, but I have zero regrets and consider it money well spent.

Fantastic Blu-ray player
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In a time where everyone is gravitating towards streaming 4k (as best as you can), there is something to be said for physical movies. 4k players especially, and this is definitely worth the price if you have a proper AV setup to take advantage of it. From a visual standpoint the performance is better than the Samsung 4k (which is no slouch) albeit just slightly. the upscale of regular blu-rays is fantastic, and when it comes to 4k movies, it's like bright deep clarity that is completely engaging. What really puts it over the edge though, which is why I said earlier for those with a proper AV set-up, is the SOUND. Sound is where it really leaves the other current crop of 4k players behind, since it's Hi-Res audio certified. The sound is completely full, completely engaging, and completely detailed. The visuals and the audio that this can put out definitely makes your movies come to life. I would only suggest this if a person had a proper 4k HDR television AND and a good AV unit to take advantage of it.

Good high end player
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This player competes with Oppo 203 directly. if you need a player with exceptional picture and sound quality this is player to get. if you have high end HDR 4K tv this is the player to get. Build quality is exceptional as you could expect at his price point, make sure to use certified premium HDMI cable which is capable fo passing 18Gbps data. I am using it with Samsung JS9000 HDR 4K Tv. Setup was easy one HDMI connect to HDCP compliant HDMI port on TV and one Ethernet connection to Router, make sure HDR is activated on the HDMI port tv is connected to get HDR content shown on Tv. I have played 8-10 4K movies on it without any issues. regular bluray discs are upscaled to 4K as well, depending on BD source quality it could be very good or average. if you have LG/Sony OLED I would suggest get OPPO 203 as it has Dolby vision. Panasonic doesn't. I have Oppo 203 connected to LG OLED TV in other room, my advise people who have projector to pick Panasonic over Oppo as it deals with projector HDR better than Oppo 203. I hope this helps for people deciding between players.

Pure Lemon, returned it!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got a 75 inch SONY Z9D tv & the player downsized the picture of 4K DVDs & blurays to the size of a 30 inch tv. I called Panasonic & they said this was a one in a million I got & called it a lemon. So I returned to the store, very unhappy!

Best Player On The Market!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is 100% worth every penny! If you plan on investing into a 4K Blu-Ray Player, don't cheap out on a Samsung or Phillips. This one will upscale your Standard Blu-Ray's so close to 4K, it is almost impossible to tell that it's 1080p. The 4K Blu-Ray's look so good, I could be watching a terrible movie and still enjoy it for the HDR and 2160p. The best movie I'd recommend that really shows off this Player is Deadpool.

More than worth the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am starting out my review’s rating with 4 stars not because I have found anything wrong with my Panasonic DMP-UB900, but due to not having much time with the unit. As I gain experience with it I will modify the star rating and update this review. I was planning to wait until I purchased my first 4K until later in the year but my current Samsung had other ideas with it suddenly stopping to recognize a disc in the player. I looked at the Samsung 8500 but it was getting too many adverse reviews so went with this unit. Yes it is very expensive nut it has been out in Europe for several months and getting rave reviews. The unit is clean to looks at and set up was quick and very easy. I just plugged it into power and ran HDMI cables to the Samsung UN JU8500 and my Denon AVR. I have a new 4K capable AVR on order but until it arrives have to use the Denon for sound in my home theatre. Now the reviews of the Samsung 8500 player say it does a very poor job at splitting the video and audio while the reviews on this unit say it has no issues. Well in the 2 Netflix streaming shows and one 4K blu ray it had no sync issues and the sound, to my ears, was better than what I had been getting for my older Samsung blu ray. The picture is clean and very crisp even with the streaming 4K shows and the disc of Martian was superb, and I had previously watched a blu ray version of it. All and all, this is a superb unit and it is built to the standards which a price like this demands. I do, at this point, recommend it as a top line 4K blu ray smart player.

Well Built Machine, But There's A Small Issue
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Upgraded from a Samsung UBD-M8500 player and this Panasonic 4K UHD player has a much better build quality. Fast boot times and more options to fine tune both the picture and audio quality. Comes with a high quality, lighted remote control. I own a Samsung 70" UN70KU6300 UHD 8 bit, 4K set and have the Panasonic set on 4K/60p(4:4:4) with no issues. Better picture quality and sound than my old Samsung UBD-M8500 player. That "small" issue I have concerns the optical out terminal, which is faulty. My high quality optical cable, connected to my Denon receiver, slides right out. It DOES NOT snap into the Panasonic's terminal like it should. Disappointed about this lack of quality control on a $450 machine.

great uhd video playback
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Picture is fantastic on my Samsung 65hu9000 with sek 3500 everything is better looking from dvd's to blu rays and of course UHD 4k disk. The sound is also high quality, all highs and lows are great sounding through my pioneer sc 95. Highly recommend this player.

Reference Player
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After owning the Samsung, Philips and Xbone S, I bought this player once the US got it. Has been nothing but spectacular and reliable. Sure, its pricey, but it just works and looks outstanding doing it. Amazon and Netflix UHD apps work well too.

MIXED REVIEW
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There is a lot to really like about this 4K Panasonic player. Let me list a few: * Build quality is excellent. Ideal weight balance for form. * Attractive high-end look and fit. * Fabulous remote! Beyond excellent. * Great jack-pak in the rear for connection options. *Audio is above average even in all formats (1080, 4K, 720, 480, CD) There are also some negatives as follows: *Check compatibility as this player will not deliver 4K to all 4K TV's. * Apps have to be the worst of any player, 4K or not. You'll find no VUDU, HULU, etc. Just basic Netflix and Amazon and a few sub-par apps. So STREAMING is very restricted. *response time isn't as good as it could be and loading takes a bit longer. For its current price, the Samsung 8500 may be the better choice. Certainly for its apps and price (although the Samsung failed at picture quality and its remote). I'm a Denon and Oppo person. Quality really does matter. Panasonic has done a superior job but it's a 3 star at best when compared to what is right around the corner as several more 4K players are due by Christmas.

Good, not great
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I previously had the Samsung 4k player and had little to no issues with it. It would freeze up every so often, but I don't have a lot of faith in their products anyway, so I just took it for what it was. After speaking with someone who had similar issue and they upgraded to the Panasonic, I took my Samsung in and Best Buy was awesome and let me exchange it out even though I was past the return policy. Now onto this player, I love the remote and all the picture settings that you can play with. However I am noticing the edges of my tv are lit up since I plugged in this player. Now it only does it on a true 4k disc(HDR setting, I get it), but it is a bit of an annoyance, especially in low light settings. I currently have this tv hooked up to Sony 65x930c, but because of a few blown pixels, I just ordered a 75x940d that will be replacing the set. The 940d is full array backlit, so I am hoping this helps with the issue. If it does not, I may end up returning and going back to the Samsung even though, I am not really a fan of their home theater equipment. I am also going to be upgrading my audioquest hdmi cables as the ones I have were always intended to replaced once I bought tru 4k player and well because I know they make a difference. I love Panasonic products and was very disappointed when they got rid of plasma, I would like to think with a few adjustments, that this will be worth the purchase, if not, Ill get my $350 back and just get another Samsung.
