Panasonic Has a Winner
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been a long time user of Oppo DVD/Blu ray players. However, I discovered that my Oppo 203 wouldn't send the increased color Ultra blu rays are capable of to my Sony 385ES projector when using the Oppo's tone mapping (SDR2020). I discovered that many projector owners were using this UB820 with great results, and were able to overcome the "bug" in the Oppo or Sony which made you choose between full color, but no tone mapping in the player (relying on the projector instead to less than ideal results), or superior tone mapping, but only rec709 color or 8bit color. The Panasonic has at least as good, if not superior up conversion of less than 4K resolution, and the sound quality is every bit as good as the Oppo. So, I sold the Oppo and am enjoying the superior picture quality the controls allow. The only thing I miss about the Oppo is the superior back lit remote control (motion activated) and build quality. Both of those are remedied by the Panasonic 9000, if you want to spend the extra money. Picture quality should be identical however.

Very good 4k player
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I still like physical discs, streaming just does not match the bandwidth available on physical discs so for the big blockbusters they still look much better on disc with a good TV. I was using an Xbox X for playing my 4k discs, but more and more 4k UHD titles are on triple-layer BD100 discs that were having layer transition issues with the Xbox. This has not had any hiccups yet, everything we've viewed so far has played straight through, and the video quality has been fantastic.

There is no comparison
||Posted . Owned for more than 2 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Blu-ray player will unleash Blu-ray and HDR and allow them to reach their true potential. The audio and video on my last BD player from Sony was “reference grade” audio and video . So this gem from Panasonic shows me that that they have a much higher standard of reference grade AV. You won’t regret this purchase.

Playability Issues After Several Months, Beware
||Posted . Owned for 10 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought the DP-UB820-K in September 2022, as part of upgrading the entertainment center from 2K to 4K. For the first few months, this unit was awesome. Then, we started finding scratches on new 4K UHD discs on first open that the UB820 would hang on. The movie would stall and the picture would digitize. Sometimes, the unit would take a a minute or more and play the rest of the disc. Other times, it would just abort playing. Once in a while, the player would stop responding and we'd have to pull the power to the unit and plug it back in just to be able to eject the disc. Then, we started experiencing the same thing with 2K Blu-Rays. After replacing quite a few 2K discs that played perfectly on our Sony BDP-S6700 (that we gave away thinking we would no longer need it) with 4K discs, we had some of the 2K discs tested on a 2K player... they all played fine. Then, my husband tried to play an audio CD... Disc not recognized. Same thing with a gold-plated Maxell laser cleaning audio CD. We now own another Sony BDP-S6700 that we use to play everything below 4K. Way out of the Best Buy return window my husband started a dialog with Panasonic support. Their response was to pay to have it shipped to their Florida facility for repair. He sent a cleaned Blu-Ray disc that played fine on the Sony BDP-S6700 and totally hung the UB820 with a screen shot and time marker of the spot where the issue occurs. . Panasonic is returning the unit with "No Issues Found". My husband talked to the technician who said the disc was heavily scratched and had debris all over it, and played the same on his reference unit. The 'UB820' we sent in passed all of their tests. For what it is worth, the DP-UB820-K has a stunning picture and fantastic audio decoder section. From what I found scouring A/V forums, some of these units end up similarly to the one we bought, but most are fantastic. . I'd suggest buying the Geek Squad Protection on this one, especially while it is on sale. It cost us $45 to mail the unit to Panasonic. It would have been well worth dealing with Best Buy under their protection plan than what we experienced. . And, don't get rid of your 2K player for while! The Sony BDP-S6700 2K-only player has pretty good 4K up-scaling, and is serving as decent fallback player for us. We got to the point where we would open every new movie

Worth the price!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wow! This player was a substantial upgrade over my previous player - Sony X700. The options for DV and HDR10 as well as the 1080p upscaling are all worth the price tag.

A DVD player worth its price.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Panasonic UB-820 is an amazing bluray dvd player. Panasonic has produced one of the better-quality players on the market. It is a little pricier than most players, but it is worth it in my opinion. Hook up a decent hdmi cable and the picture is amazing.

Does Everything Right
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It loads and processes discs quickly, the menu is reasonably intuitive, and I've had no issues with playback functions. The remote is the same as the Panny remote I had about a decade ago before moving to an Oppo BDP-103, so I have no complaints about the remote. I do understand why others complain about it, though. If you're looking at this player, you're thinking one of two things: "It sure is an expensive 4k player." Sometimes, you don't get what you pay for. I simply did not want to pull the trigger on the $1k flagship unit, and this one has exceptional audio and video quality with superior processing speed, making it the right choice for me. It is not built like a tank like Oppo or other flagship players, but as long as you don't abuse it, the unit will last you many years.

Bring your TV up to its potential!
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great dvd player. You really can not appreciate a new high-end 4K tv just using streaming. Everything is better video and audio. DVDs are not dead. Have an OPPO on older version of OLED, stopped making thiese. In comparison, I am not disappointed at all in this Panasonic. Bought during Black Friday, $100 off. Might buy another one for New OLED when price goes down again. Great Quality. Very Satisfied.

Best 4K player under $500 (right under)
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have two of these, each hooked up to a high end samsung TV. I initially used Samsungs top end 4K player and the Panasonic hands down destroys the samsung. The auto settings on this player are legit and the ability to set the luminance based on TV capeabilities is a hige bonus. The player seems to maximize picture quality based on your TV features. The picture quality outweighs the pricenof fhe product.

Top UHD player
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After lots of research into a 4k player I decided that this may be best I could do for under $1000. This thing is amazing...sound is better than I could have imagined in 5.1.4 Atmos. The HDR optimizer that allowed me a much better experience with my UHD65 Projector was worth every penny. Had to order it cause my Best Buy wasn't a Mangolia store. Took a week. Well worth the wait. Oh and Netflix HDR +ATMOS! Be mindful no VUDU though.
