Customers are saying

Customers value the Streaming 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player for its excellent picture quality, Dolby Vision performance, and upscaling capabilities. The device is also appreciated for its quiet operation and overall good performance. However, some customers find the button layout and user interface to be less than ideal, and the remote control and app selection could be improved.

This Panasonic Player Bests My Oppo UDP-203!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is a short review for now, but I will add to it as I spend more time with this player. In the short time I have owned the Panasonic DP-UB820 I have been very impressed. This a solid unit in all areas with the exception of apps. At present there are only three apps available: Amazon, Netflix and YouTube. If you are comparing this to the Oppo you're up by three. By design the Oppo does not support apps. The Panasonic GUI hasn't really changed since I purchased the first Panasonic BD player they put out. In my opinion it is decent, but I would love to have Panasonic spiff it up. The Oppo GUI looks so much better. Next up is build quality. There is no contest here. The Oppo has a higher build quality than the DP-UB820. BUT the Panasonic is still very well built and hefty compared to units like the Sony UBP-700. I have three other Panasonic BD players and all are still running as good as new. Where the Panasonic really stands out is picture quality. I was expecting the Panasonic to have slightly inferior PQ compared to my Oppo 203. Much to my surprise the Panasonic has better PQ than the Oppo! The color palate is broader, colors are richer and there is more detail apparent in the PQ of the Panasonic compared to the Oppo! This unit just puts out an absolutely breathtaking picture. This is especially true for native 4K (both disc and streaming) but also when upconverting standard Blu-rays and DVDs. Upconverted BDs look VERY close to native 4K discs, especially if the BD is well mastered. The sound quality of the Panasonic and Oppo are very close. Both sound excellent for both movies and music. To my ears the Panasonic sounds slightly warmer with a bit more detail than the Oppo. The Oppo has a colder more clinical sound. The remote on the DP-UB820 is really it's weak spot. Having had three previous Panasonic BD players I am very familiar with the remote layout. Having said that this remote has the "Top Menu", "Netflix" and "Home" buttons too close to the navigation buttons. As a result I find myself constantly hitting the "Home" button for instance instead of the right navigation button. It's really annoying! The other great thing about this Panasonic is that it now is firmware upgradable to handle all three of the most common HDR formats: HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. It does not support Technicolor's HDR format, but I am unaware of any 4k player that does at this time. There are very few TVs that support Technicolor HDR anyway. To sum it all up this is simply a brilliant 4K BD player. It's nice to see such a great player from Panasonic. They have always made great audio and video products and the DP-UB820 continues that tradition! SInce Oppo is no longer producing players I firmly believe this is the best 4K player out there PERIOD. Now if Panasonic would start making audio components again I would be a very happy man!

I can't attest to the actual performance of the component. I tried to run it through my pre/pro, and it kept trying to connect directly with the television. As you can imagine, this led to connectivity problems and it would not function. It may be good for a direct to tv connection, but if you have discreet components, this probably isn't the deck for you

We apologize for the playback issues you are experiencing. Please ensure that the disc format is compatible with your player. You can find the list of compatible formats in the manual. If the discs are compatible, we recommend resetting the unit to factory settings. To reset the unit, follow these steps: 1. While the unit is off, press and hold [OK], the yellow button, and the blue button on the remote control simultaneously for more than 5 seconds. "00 RET" will be displayed on the unit's display. 2. Press (right) repeatedly on the remote control until "08 FIN" is displayed on the unit's display. 3. Press and hold [OK] for more than 5 seconds. -M Panasonic

Bought this from recommendation of a friend and reviews. After 6 months will no longer play new 4K or Blu-ray Discs. Unacceptable for any price let alone the high cost of this unit . Now I have the hassle of dealing directly with the manufacturer to get the unit to work. Save your money buy other brand.

The playback is great but the streaming services are disappointing. No Hulu, Disney+, Peacock or other staples of on line streaming. Only Netflix, Prime Video and YouTube. Web Browser won’t connect to Disney+ with obscure security error. NAS Home support works well however.

I would recommend against buying this player. I’ve had nothing but problems since I bought it. After about an hour of watching a DVD or UHD blue ray it freezes and develops red and green blocks and lines. I’ve tried several different cables and it is hooked directly to a LG C9 with a GE premium high speed certified cable. If you look these issues up online you will see that this is not a isolated issue but a major design issue.

Hi, Jonathan! We apologize for the issue you have experienced with your Blu-ray player. To resolve this issue, please ensure that the disc is clean and free of scratches. Additionally, check for any available firmware updates and confirm that the disc is compatible with your player and region code. If these steps do not resolve the issue, we recommend taking the player to a professional repair service. -C Panasonic

    Fantastic Player!

As an physical media collector, and a quality guru, I can't express enough how awesome 4k and regular bluray discs look with this player. Paired with my Dennon AVR and my LG OLED tv, you simply can not get the video OR audio quality from streaming services as you can from physical discs and this player. I bought this player about 4 years ago now, and it's still going strong. There have been some hiccups from time to time where a pull of the power plug was needed to reset it, but with the latest firmware updates over the years, this has been less and less of an issue. HDR10 and Dolby Atmos looks stunning through this player. And CD playback is top notch as well. A lot of 1080p standard bluray discs look better on this player as well, as it has awesome up-scaling capabilities. If you're super hardcore about built quality, you could be looking at the big brother of this model the DP-UB9000P1K, but it is just not worth the extra $500 if you don't have a professionally installed home theater setup and the extra cash to burn. While the build quality of that model is top notch, it just isn't worth the extra $500.

Received the Panasonic UB820 blu-ray player for Christmas (it was purchased based on research and reviews). Connected the player to our system on Dec 27, plugged it in and tried five different (manufactured/licensed) audio CDs. All played perfectly, BUT the album title and track names were NOT displayed (meaning that the CD Text data encoded on the discs is not read and displayed). I updated the firmware. No help. I spent time in a chat, on the phone, and in email with Panasonic support. No resolution. They did not offer help in getting it to work, nor did they state whether the "feature" is or is not supported. This is basic stuff. It should work out of the box. This may be a minor niggle for many. It is important to me.
