    Satisfyingly Fun Return To Form

This game is fun to play and hard to put down. Haven't noticed too much of a challenge yet. Interesting twist to the combat system, but it gets monotonous after several battles. The story is memorable and funny at times, and the environments are vibrant and colorful. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore and secrets to uncover. Plenty of collectibles too. I found myself humming along to many musical tunes as well. This game is a nice departure from the more recent Paper Mario iterations. Reminiscent of The Thousand Year Door. I wish they would go back to leveling up Mario based on battles completed.

This product has been reviewed by my son Jonathan, for whom the game was purchased. Mario has been Nintendo’s mascot for over thirty years and is easily one of the most recognizable of gaming icons. Considering this, it can be possible for someone to be a bias concerning his games. When it comes to the well crafted list of Paper Mario games, I cannot say which game is better because I love them all for different reasons but, I can definitely say that playing through the Origami King was not a tear-ible experience. Before I go into what I like about the game, I should explain what the game is. Mario and his brother, Luigi, have been invited to an origami festival. When they get to the town, they find out that nobody is there. It turns out that the origami king had invaded the town with the intentions of turning the flat-paper world into origami. So Mario sets off to stop the origami king and save his friends. But, to do that, he first needs to find the 5 giant streamers that keep him from entering the castle. Unlike the first 2 games-which were rpg adventure games, this game is more of a puzzle adventure game. Some people would think that’s a bad thing, but I think it’s a decent change of pace. As for what I like about the game, I honestly don’t know where to start. I guess the first thing I should talk about is the creativity throughout the game. Every time I saw a new enemy or a Vellumental (a type of boss in the game), I always asked myself “how long did it take them to make these models”, or “is there any way I can make of these for myself”. Every area had something that stood out more than the others. The red and blue streamer areas were both visually stunning and had plenty of creative events. The Big Sho’ Theater was one of my favorite moments. The yellow streamer area had the best music in the entire game. I would stop playing for a while so I could listen to the music in Shroom City. The purple streamer area had really fun gameplay, especially at the diamond island, where you had to go through the temples of power, wisdom, and courage (which definitely doesn’t remind me of the Legend of Zelda games... not at all). The green streamer area had one of my favorite boss fights. I loved how the scissors decided to make thing fair by putting on a sleeve. And if you broke that sleeve, they would not hesitate to unleash an attack the would instantly lead to a game over. From the beginning, all the way to the end, this game made me laugh, cry, and it even startled me a few times. I can understand why some people would miss the RPG style of the old games, or the original characters that would stand out more than others, but that doesn’t make this game any less enjoyable.

    It's Fun, But Not Perfect

Do you like puzzles and strategy? Do you like boss battles that involve memory challenges, matching games, and sheer tests of your patience? Then this is the game for you! Overall, Paper Mario: Origami King was fun. It is a nice departure from reality and is pretty wholesome overall and fit for young kids to adults who are kids at heart. I spent about a month playing this game from start to finish and overall, I enjoyed the experience and didn't regret buying it. That being said, this is not a flawless game with some aspects of it that will leave you scratching your head or even pulling your hair out. Many people went into this game hoping for a sequel to Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. I haven't played that game but from what I've read, this isn't at all a great follow up to that installment. Others wanted this to be along the lines of the fan favorite Mario RPG from the Super Nintendo. I played that game, loved it, and can honestly say this one is nothing like that, either. All of the battles in this game are turned based, similar to Mario RPG, but in order to beat the various challenges, it comes down to how well you can organize the battle board. Special items in this game end up having little value and with an abundance of coins, you'll easily be able to buy whatever special items you need. Still, the game drags on and feels monotonous at times. Each boss battle is just a matter of, again, how you arrange the board and special spaces. There are parts of the game that never feel fully realized or thought out. After you beat the game, you're hoping there's more to do or an added adventure–but there isn't. The credits roll and the game resets itself to the scene right before you go into the final battle. Unlike other RPG Mario games, your team is sparse this go around. There's no Luigi to join your team (he's in the game and makes appearances), no Princess, no Toad, Yoshi or special characters like Geno and Mallow–it's just you and Olivia for most of the game with brief stents of short-run characters with little to no personality. Overall, fun, a great way to past the time but the format of the game–having to battle bosses and bad guys through re-arranging the board–makes the game feel dull and flat. Also, the lack of playable content after you beat the game, unlike Mario Rabbids for the Switch, feels like a missed opportunity as well. It would be nice to have a DLC come out to extend the life of the game but it doesn't seem likely. With the puzzles and all the reading required to get through the game, I don't think young kids would enjoy this but teens on up will enjoy it.

The new battle system has a decent learning curve but once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad. But overall it’s a great story.

This game is so much fun! My kids and I had a blast playing through the whole thing! The animation is second to none. The story is fantastic! So many funny moments! There is so much to do and you won't want to put it down. The new ring battle system is a little different and difficult to pick up at first but you will be a pro in no time. This isn't just one of the best Paper Mario games, it is also one of the best Mario games, period!

The last Paper Mario game I played was The Thousand-Year door, which was one of my favorites. As you might know already, the battle system is different which took a few battles to get used to, but once I got the hang of it I had no problems at all. I loved the story and the humor was still there from TTYD. I do miss the old battle system but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

    Beautiful but... tedious?

I haven't plaid a Paper Mario game since Super Paper Mario on the Wii. I remember really enjoying that game but not too many details. But I love RPGs and I had fond memories of the franchise, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'll start with what I love... the graphics are gorgeous, this is a beautiful game to look at. Nintendo is killing it with the textures and lighting in games lately and produces results I was not expecting on the Switch considering it's not as "powerful" as PlayStation and XBox rivals. The story so far from what I've played is fun, and there's a lot of very cute humor. BUT it doesn't feel like an RPG to me (other than a lot of talking) there's not much of a leveling or skills system that I've seen so far. But my biggest problem is the combat. I am not a fan of the weird tedious puzzle rings to line up the enemies before combat. Maybe I'm just getting old... but I'm not a fan of this combat system. And the boss battles are even worse. So this is a tough one for me. I love all things Mario, the graphics are beautiful, the story seems fun so far, I WANT to like this game so much. But with the battle system I have to admit I kind of regret buying this one. MAYBE it will grow on me, and I'll keep trying to play it, but I can't give it a glowing recommendation. I'd say watch some reviews online that show the battle system. If that looks fun to you then you'll probably enjoy this game. If you're looking for a more traditional RPG, you may be disappointed.

If you have played previous Paper Mario games and what parts you enjoyed will affect your how you feel about this one. It is not my favorite, but it looks good, is humorous, and is fun to play. Our granddaughters enjoy it (having never played previous versions) as the pace is not too fast so they can think about what they would like to do. Good game, $60 was a bit steep for people who really liked the play of previous versions.

I really liked Paper Mario: The Origami King, it has really good dialogue, fantastic music, and it visually looks beautiful. The battle system will definitely be a hit or miss for people, I really liked the puzzle solving aspect of the battles but some people may not like that aspect. Most of the bosses are pretty fun but there are some that were a bit of a pain, but overall I really liked Paper Mario: The Origami King.

This is such a fun game. The concept is very simple but the visuals are hilarious. This is such a creative game. Although not as good as the flagship Mario games, it's a fun mis-adventure of sorts. The turned based battle grind can be a littlw daunting but easily avoidable in many instances. I highly recommend if youre a Mario fan. Also, buying this way makes it easy to pay cash and avoid adding your credit/debit card to another online retailer.

Not a big fan of turned based combat but sometimes the atmosphere and storytelling of certain games make me give them a try anyway. Went in blind to this and couldn't put it down. The world building is awesome, the characters and really fun, and the gameplay (even the combat) is engaging. Highly recommended.

Paper Mario is a fun action/adventure game for all ages with an entertaining story and characters, and is full of funny pun filled dialogue. The battle system is the only weak link in my opinion. It is just not that fun and can become a slog during boss battles. Fortunately the many, many, toads you will save throughout the game can help you out with that.

This is the best Paper Mario game since Super Paper Mario, or even The Thousand-Year Door, depending on your preferences. The battle systems is clever but not necessarily intuitive, so I never really got a handle on the more complicated encounters, even by the end of the game. It is, however, very well-written and beautiful to look at. I still miss partners, though.

Honestly despite the backlash this game has gotten from fans, there's a lot to enjoy in this game. The dialogue and writing is phenomenal, the graphics are drop dead gorgeous and charming, and the experience is very memorable. One big negative is there not being any rewards for battling enemies.

One can see the deeper they play into Paper Mario: The Origami King the effect of the restrictions placed on the development team in terms of not being allowed to utilize the core Mario characters in any meaningful way. The bosses you'll face are basically generic office supplies; Bowser and his (non-"folded") minions are firmly relegated to a minimal role, with a few exceptions. The battle system, which involves lining enemies up by rotating and shifting panels arranged in a circle around Mario, is okay but feels very repetitive quickly, and the lack of any sort of levelling up diminishes your incentive to do so. The Boss fights are far more varied and creative and offer a genuine challenge, though. The visuals are very nice and fit the theme perfectly; castles, buildings, trees, bushes, hills, etc. are all depicted as origami along with most of the enemies you face. The locations vary in type with a few standouts, and the music can be catchy at times. One pet peeve I've had with the game is that some repetitive things (like Olivia's Vellumental transformations) can be skipped, but other things that really need to be can't. The Eddy River stage (which takes several minutes to complete and MUST be finished all at once, and there is no way to back out once you've started) can be especially difficult if you're trying to collect all the coins for a "special prize"; fail and it's "Game Over" and a host of screens, animations, and a LOOONNG, unskippable monologue from the boat pilot as you begin the stage. It's not failing and having to repeat a challenge so much as the unnecessary steps and time required to get back into the action and try again, and when that's exacerbated by a challenge that's literally minutes long, you can hit "rage quit" territory in a hurry. Unfortunately this isn't the only instance in the game where you'll be subjected to such conditions. A word of warning unless Nintendo patches the issue: when you get the VIP Pass to enter the Spring of Rainbows toward the latter part of the game (20-plus hours in), DO NOT turn around and exit until you've completed the area. The guard won't let you back in and, without any known way to reacquire the Pass, it renders you unable to finish the game. Even so, there's a LONG (10 minutes-plus) "Win or Game Over" challenge at the end of the area, and be warned: it can be VERY difficult because its mechanics come completely out of left field from what you've become accustomed to throughout the rest of the game up to that point. I've enjoyed Paper Mario: The Origami King overall, but I honestly wouldn't rate it nearly among the best of the Switch's first-party offerings.
