When the Beatles' catalog was initially released on CD in the late 1980's, the albums were released in the original UK format. The two Past Masters releases were designed to accumulate the cuts that were available only as singles and EPs in the UK. Since the practice in the UK was not to include singles on the accompanying LP releases (so customers would not pay for the same song twice - something we never worried about in the USA0, the Past Masters include many of the most famous cuts. Volume I includes the pre-Rubber Soul releases, with classic singles, with some surprisingly good lesser well-known cuts and B-sides. In retrospect, the German versions of She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand would have been better relegated to the mid-90's Anthology series.
