A sturdy unit but the ease of use is quite complicated. After I accidentally figured out how to use it, I realized that the lights were obnoxiously too intrusive. My neighbor's nonverbal child was over and I realized that it was triggering him in a not so positive way. I quickly disconnected and after they left, I tried to reconnect and could not figure out how. Be conscious about the space that you are utilizing and how many lights that you are dedicating to this project! My livingroom looked like a NYC Broadway marquee with all those flashing lights! Heck it almost triggered me!

This works intuitively with my existing entertainment center structure and has made anything from shows to video games more interesting with a fun visual faire. I wish this still came in a set with the light strip itself, but, both of these together are worthwhile in any home theatre.

First Hue Play Box I received cleary seemed used, I spent over 2 hours trying to get it to work. I was really disappointed, especially after reading reviews with the same issue. After I returned it I decided to try one more time. When I received the 2nd box it, it’s set up worked and ran into zero issues and I love using it for movies and music. My only critique is not being able to play my PS5 with 120 FPS. I hope they make this upgrade soon. Also, I’ll be sure to add insurance to this since a lot of reviews are saying it stops working after a bit.

With the new updates, the Hue Play Sync box is definitely worth it. It took a little time to set up with my tv and soundbar, but it has been working very well ever since!

If you have the smart home hue setup and love movies/music/TV then this is an amazing device that will adaptively change your hue lights to match the mode or tone of what you're playing. It does have a bit of a hefty price tag so I wouldn't recommend to a non-enthusiast but have always enjoyed the hue as moonlights for my viewing and this really enhances the effect like having a private movie theater

I bought the Sync along with strip lights. Once I hooked it up and started syncing, I added my hue lamp as well. Now everything is in sync during a movie or sporting event. Just makes watching TV more enjoyable.

Good product. Only 2 complaints. I think the price could be better. The box gets pretty hot touch when in use for a lengthy (2hr movie) period of time.

Eventually these will be priced right at $100. But if your like me and couldn’t wait and have a bunch of hue strips around your tv it makes for a pretty immersive experience

Whatever you do - save yourself the trouble and wait for Hue to fix their issues. I have approximately 15 different hue lights and love the lights and could not wait for the Snyc Box. Buy the box, bring it home and followed the directions and nothing! I spoke with 4 different customer service reps about my issue and the first thing 3 of them told me, “we’ve been having a lot of calls with problems with the Sync Box”...red flag #1,2, and 3! This is what it boils down to - if you have a AV receiver where your Apple TV, PS, Directv, etc plug into and from your receiver you have an output that goes to your TV (this is done for the best sound) this product will NOT work!!! I was told by customer service they don’t have a fix for this and after reading complaints on Reddit - I am not alone. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Hue products and their lights and capabilities but do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy the sync yet!! They have too many issues right now and I will be taking it back to Best Buy first thing in the morning. And by the way Phillips Hue Leadership - your customer service is absolutely horrible!! Had 2 technicians put me on extended holds and then hung up on me after being frustrated of not having anyway to assist me! Furthermore, you have set your technicians and associates up for failure because you have left them NO instructions to troubleshoot these issues. This is a breakdown in leadership at Phillips Hue, and your company is better than this. Absolutely disappointing!!!

    • Brand response from The Philips Lighting Team
      Posted .

Hi there, firstly we'd like to apologize for the experience you had over the phone, that's not the level of service we aim to provide. We certainly have troubleshooting steps for the Hue Sync Box, and are capable of investigating any issues that can't be solved by these steps, internally. As with all new products, new challenges do arise following the release, but we work to resolve this as quickly as we can once they're reported.
The Sync Box does work with AV receivers, and it should be possible to use the sync box as second output. The recommended set up is still to have the sync box between the AVR and the TV. But if the receiver has two outputs, and the user prefers to use the second output, that works too.
It's unfortunate that you've decided to return your Sync Box, we would have been happy to help you out with it. If you ever need assistance in the future, you can find us on Facebook (http://m.me/HuePhilips) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/tweethue), where we're available 24/7.

Finally an easy and supported way to sync your lights to your entertainment unit. The price point is enough to scare a lot of people away. Setup is a breeze. Easy to control.

My husband bought this to enhance his gaming setup. He loves it and it seems to work as intended. This coupled with the Hue connect hub and the strips of lights help to create a more immersive gaming or viewing experience for him, so that's a win!

I have hue light strips behind my tv for ambient light. I also have two vertical strips hidden behind some trim on either side of my tv. This has worked much better than expected. Used as a hdmi switch: My previous hdmi switch would get confused by always on devices like the Nvidia shield or a firestick. This one has always gone to the correct device. The only con we have with the auto switching is when my wife turns on my PS4 by accident. That has nothing to do with this device in particular and just about hdmi switches in general. A major pro is you can open the app to select the hdmi device to use. My old switch has a crappy ir remote that would cycle through devices, turning each one on as you cycle through it. This will allow you to label each device and choose what to use. As a ambient light source: This works great for movies and games. For general tv shows, it’s mainly shades of white and not too noticeable. I have mine set to the most subtle setting and think that works great for movies. Action packed games may benefit from more dynamic modes. This is expensive, don’t get me wrong. I had many issues with our previous hdmi switch (I could get it working fine but my wife couldn’t figure it out). This has been a plug and play device and my wife hasn’t even had to think about it at all. There isn’t really anything to figure out, it works great with the always on devices that are problematic with the 30-40$ hdmi switches. The hue lighting is awesome and I really enjoy having the ambient light.

Works great in the Living room. Can have it sync my Hue Play Bars I have behind the TV while watching a movie, or Light up the Living room while playing some music. It also cleaned up the wiring I had going to the TV because all my HDMI cables now go to this box and I only have 1 HDMI cable going to the TV. Philips recently added IR support to the box so you can program a universal making it easier to use.
