Great for keeping lights in sync tv but not hdmi 2.1. That’s means you can’t do 4K 120.

This little device is a disaster. It’s such a pain to try and get it working. I’m currently using two Hue Plays behind my TV, and the software seems extremely buggy. I should have done more research on this product. I automatically assumed i could use my Samsung Smart TV to use it... for example, using the Netflix app on it. Nope! I had to connect my Xbox to it with Netflix to make it work... when it actually works. Overall, this isn’t worth $230. Great concept, but too buggy right now. I’ll wait a couple more days, up to my return period, to see if they can fix the issues.

Hi Toddles, thanks for posting your review on the HDMI Sync Box. We need to inform you that the device won't work with built-in Smart TV apps, Smart TV apps run directly on the TV. The content will need to pass through the Sync Box so it can analyze the content and send the right commands to your lights. If you are facing any bugs, please report them to us on Facebook (http://m.me/HuePhilips) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/tweethue) where we should be able to flag and resolve them. We are available 24/7, so you can contact us anytime that suits you best.

For the price this is not worth it. Barely functional most of the time. You also have to install two separate apps and switch between the two depending on what you want to do. Quality of the strips and environment is awesome when it works, but until the app is fixed, the entire experience is terrible. I've had the sync box for a few months and it has been a little testy with holding a connection at times, but usable. In the last few weeks it's been borderline broken and I can't figure it out. I can start the sync everytime, but once I adjust 1 setting, like brightness, or intensity, it loses the connection and never reconnects. It will continue syncing the lights but I'm unable to change anything. Only way is to completely kill the app, stop the sync and restart it all. I did a factory reset on the sync box, and the hue bridge, uninstalled and reinstalled both apps as a fresh install, but still have the issues. The Wireless is set to a 2.4ghz connection (wifi split between 2.4 and 5). The connection is Shield-> Sync Box -> TV. This is super straightforward, and the router is literally 6 inches away.

I read the reviews before ordering this product. I've seen some cool user videos posted online and some people are having success with the product. I don't want to pay $200+ to be a beta tester. I'm going to wait to by version 2 or wait until they can support HDR+ and Dolby Vision. I mainly tried this with my AppleTV 4K, LG E8 OLED and SK9Y Soundbar. Also briefly tested with a FireStick 4K. I have my AppleTV set to 4K SDR, 4:4:0 Chroma for menus and have the video set to "match content" so it will select HDR or Dolby Vision when an item in my AppleTV library calls for a specific format and some top calibrators suggest this as well as running HDR runs the screen at 100%, consumes a lot of power and burns screen out faster. The Hue Play HDMI Sync Box had problems switching to different formats and kept turning my "match content"setting off. It also lowered my output to 1080p HDR. Did the same thing on my FireTV 4K stick. That's not going to fly. Also, video randomly cuts out for a second and seemed to do this every minute or two at times. It also at times went to a "digital snow" screen like you see when you are having DRM / HDMI issues and tv having sync issues. Dolby Vision is not supported and the best option would be not to do any syncing and pass thru the video and revert to a mood setting on lights. Instead, it would have bright fuchsia and purple looking colors that didn't at all match the screen. No bueno. I've wanted this solution so much that I toyed with the idea of just using the FireStick hooked into the box specially since the AppleTV app is now available on the FireTV 4K stick and it's only in 4K HDR on the app which should have technically worked since basic HDR is supported. It also had issues and after I boxed it up, I saw that it had changed my video settings to 1080p HDR as well as I had it set to match content like my AppleTV. I experienced a lot of syncing issues and decided to box the thing up and plan on returning it when I feel like going back to BB. If this was a reasonably priced item, I would have kept it and waited for firmware to hopefully fix my issues and used it with a secondary FireTV or Roku Stick +. I love HUE products. They are like crack....very addicting. However, they are very overpriced and I'm not going to overpay for something that feels like it was rushed to market in time for Christmas. I waited on hold for 20 minutes to ask the support person if future firmware would address the Dolby Vision and I could barely understand him and he wasn't at all helpful. FWIW, I'm not getting points for this review as I've reached my yearly limit. I'm so disappointed with the Hue Play HDMI Sync Box, I am taking the time to post an honest review that may help someone with a similar setup not waste a bunch of time until they get the bugs worked out.

We really appreciate that you've taken time to share your honest feedback, it's the best way we can work on improving our products and services.
Of course, we're disappointed to hear you were underwhelmed with your new Sync Box, and plan on returning it, but we hope you can give it another chance in the future.
It's unusual that your 4K content was downgraded to 1080p, the Sync Box supports 4K; 3D, HDR+, Dolby Vision and HDMI ARC content is also supported as pass through, but the light sync will not work. It may be worth testing out another HDMI cable between the devices-Sync Box or Sync Box-TV.
If you change your mind about sending it back, we would really like you to reach out to us via Facebook (http://m.me/HuePhilips) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/tweethue), we're available 24/7 there and will be happy to look into any issues you're experiencing.

Expensive 4k or 8k tv mounted to the wall ✅ Equally expensive surround sound ✅ Comfortable living room couches or lazy boys ✅ If you have what's listed below this is the last piece to make you visual experience a over the top experience you usually have to pay at a IMAX theatre to achieve. Pair it with Netflix or the upcoming Disney plus service and youll never wanna watch TV without the hue sync box again. You already invested thousands into your entertainment system of your like me. If your a baller with some cash to burn, this will be one purchase you will not regret.

Hooked up two Hue Play bars behind my TV. Works really well and the lights look great. The auto signal detect doesn't work all the time so you do have to switch inputs manually either via app or physical button on the box.

It’s a neat idea but in reality the flashing lights started to give me a headache 30 mins into a movie with it set yo the modest intensity, had it a month an used it 3 times. Took it out of the living room now the kids use it for “dance party’s” while watching music videos. Super over priced and unnecessary. Forgot when I bought it so I didn’t have a chance to return otherwise I would have gotten my $250 back
