It is expensive. With Six play lights around the room, two philips bloom at the bottom of the tv wall, and the radiant lights behind the tv. It’s very cool I wish the settings in the app were better but once you learn to adjust it to what your watching it adds a level of immersion you can’t get in theaters. It should have home kit support. Siri short cuts only work through your phone.

Great love it. Best feature about this is t just the sync of lights. But how it syncs your hdmi inputs. I can turn on PS5 it automatically turns the tv soundbar on to PS5. Click 1 button on my appletv while on the PS5, and it automatically switches to the appletv input. Pass through is great, I see no lag whatsoever playing FPS games. The only con is the price, little steep, but I still needed.

When it works, it is very cool. Particularly with the Hue sync play light strip behind the TV. All the lights in the room are setup as an entertainment group. The Hue Play sync App was very easy to use and setting up your lights were simple and intuitive. The App does not have many features but in this case simple is better and it gets the job done. Being now my second unit because the first flaked out, I'm hopeful that it will continue to operate properly as it does add a new dimension to watching movies on the TV. My only real concern is that some content, certain movies do not work with the sync box. A message comes up and tells you so on the tv when you go to order a movie. Seems like a copyright issue in using lights with the film. That's concerning as more studios become savvy they may charge more to watch those movies or Hue may make a deal with a studio or two and limit what the lights can be seen with. It does seem to work on all Netflix movies. Your out of luck casting from your smart tv directly though. It has to go from a cable box into the sync unit or you can plug a chrome cast or TiVo dongle into it and use it from there. Highly recommend, just can be quirky at times like all other technology...

    Philips Hue Sync Box

I’ve been wanting this product for awhile now due to its ability to sync the colors displayed on my tv or whatever items I have plugged into it. It works really well, when it works, but it can sometimes lose connection pretty easily and you have to mess with the sync box a bit to connect it again. This could be do to internet strength and connectivity, but it is a minor inconvenience. I use 2 Philips Hue Play lights and have them setup right behind my monitor (I use the sync box to match the colors displayed on my monitor while playing Xbox) and they look fantastic when they sync the color. One thing I must note is that the Sync Box is only able to run at 60hz, which means that if you try to run whatever display you use at more than 60hz, the color sync option will not work. I have a 144hz monitor so it’s a little disappointing that there isn’t a Sync Box capable of running at 120hz, or 144hz, but I run my display at 60hz to use the color sync option because I like it that much. Overall, the product is great and I have enjoyed using it with my Xbox. The setup is easy, but you must have at least one Philips Hue Light as well as the Hue Bridge. Also, just remember that the sync box only runs at a max of 60hz, anything over 60hz will not allow your sync box to sync the lights with the colors on your display.

Pros: syncs the image on screen with the lights, easy to use app to get the settings just right, sleek design. Cons: pretty expensive ($225 at the time), no HDMI 2.1, issues syncing Xbox series x when 2 or more items are plugged in. This device will also make you despise letterbox formatted movies.

I tried several software apps but this is def the best way to sync your lights to your TV, it works perfectly for movies or gaming, even when playing music. They recently updated the firmware and now you can control it using your smart assistant and you can set commands using your TV remote control, pretty cool. I think it's kind of expensive, one star less for that reason.

It's a pretty amazing idea and it helps the immersion of everything especially gaming which is what I primarily use it on oh, the only thing I do not like about it is that the programs on your smart television do not work with it you have to use a third-party firestick Etc.

This is a great device and one I have been waiting on for awhile. I was able to do this on my PC with an application but having the ability to have it Thur HDMI on my Tv is really nice. I have had very few issues setup was easy, plug it in and install application and update, set up entertainment area if it wasn’t already. My only issue is one that’s due to my personal setup not an issue with the device it’s self or the software. All of my devices run through my A/V receiver and one HDMI from the receiver to the TV and I have that going into one input on the hue play sync. Works perfect except no audio goes through this HDMI only video so watching movies or playing games works with no issues. But if you want to use the music functionality this setup will not work. I am sure I can find a work around for this but just haven’t spent the time to figure it out yet. But so far this device works perfectly.

Was it worth it? Yes. Will it aggravate you in that moment when you are exhausted and all you want to is relax and watch some tv? Possibly. Setup was a breeze but I did learn a couple of things. I had to move the bridge closer to the sync box. Otherwise the lights (gradient strip in my case) would "lag" and color transitions were not that smooth. I also disabled auto switcher and didn't bother letting destiny determine if my ps, xbox or switch were going to display. This means I go into the app (hue sync app, not the hue app) to switch the inputs. Pressing the button on the sync box is also an option but the app works very well. In the 45 days or so of operation, I've only had the screen flicker twice as if it lost the connection. Not too bad. It's pricey but you probably won't regret it. Find the hue subreddit and ask for assistance if you need it. Those folks try to help you out. Lastly, try medium intensity at half brightness and it will blend into the background making for a subtle addition to any show.

I've been waiting for a Philips Hue product to do this for a LONG time. I've tried the Raspberry pi projects, and lately the hue sync app for the Nvidia Shield TV (which was VERY close to what I wanted) so I can really appreciate the good in this product. First, the CEC and 4k HDR passthrough put me at ease. I can still use my one remote and it all works. The setup was simple (download the hue sync app, go through the instructions) and the use is fantastic! It is so much faster and fluid than the other options. It's subtle when it needs to be, responsive, and really increases the coolness of my living room. The music option is also very cool. It detects the highs and lows of each sound wave and responds accordingly. It's not like a listening iPhone, this is analyzing and responding.. its really cool!. Thanks guys for finally coming out with this!

The box is easy to set up. The only negative is there is separate app in addition to the regular hue app that you have to use. You can sync up to 10 lights to create your entertainment area. Games and action movies are extra immersive.

This is an awesome device, it really adds to the value of the Hues lighting. The effects of the lighting really add to the feel of the movie your watching. I still need to add more lights and I want to get the Gradient light strip for the back of my TV, but. they have been sold out for a while now.I don't want to watch TV without it now. I read some people having issues with it connecting but I have not experienced any issues. I does take a few seconds to connect when you first Start the syncing process in the app, but its not too long and hasn't been annoying. I been using with Apple TV connected and so far I love it. I have not added more devices yet like Xbox and may down the road.

I use this frequently for music and movies. It can be a little quirky in how it interacts with my audio receiver. Sometimes it takes a little time to "wake up," but that could also be the fault of my receiver and the signal it sends as sources are selected. Lights sync without issue to the color of the screen or the beat of the music. Fun feature with the syncing lights, but I would only recommend to purchase it if you find it on sale. Full price may be a little too expensive for the fun factor of it. If you host a lot of parties, maybe you'd be more likely to pay full price. If you like Philips Hue, you're going to want one of these for your primary entertainment room. I'll likely get another for my office if I catch a sale again.

Slight delay in picture vs light matching and price is pretty insane but if that’s not an issue I personally really like it. Some ppl don’t and find it distracting but I shut those ppl out of my life. I used this with my amazon firecube and it works great. Plus Alexa can control the TV/sync and lights with that setup.

If you are part of the Hue ecosystem already, and have been using any of their lighting behind a TV, it is a no brainer to add this to your setup. It is really cool for what it does - but the novelty wears off fast, unless you really need the extra immersion. A common reaction from guests and friends is "oh wow, thats so cool..... now what?" I do not use it on any of the higher sensitivities as it just is an annoyance of light at that point, but it does add a nice after effect for the eyes when paired with the gradient light strip or the hue play bars. It is a more mild effect that way. Xbox Series X, 4k Apple TV, Nintendo switch, and a sounder, and paired to a 4k Vizio - usually no issues with devices switching, though sometimes you need to get a remote involved. However I would not recommend it as a starting point for a Hue setup due to cost, ease of use, and likely improved features in the second iteration of a sync box (whenever that will release).

I enjoy how this was updated for Dolby vision, but still lacks 120hz. This thing is stupid expensive for what it is. If Phillips could bring down their pride a bit and price it at 150-175, it would be a lot more favorable to select. I’ll likely return and await what holiday deals will come up.

Great Device But Needs Fine Tuning to Get the Most

This device is very cool if you are invested in the Philips Hue ecosystem this is a very nice addition to your media setup that adds another level of immersion. You definitely need to fine tune how the lights react and how many you use cause if you have to many lights or the reaction of the box set to high it can be really distracting so you need to find a good balance of number of lights and how much they actually do if you can do that this thing is great but otherwise it can definitely be distracting. My personal suggestion is not to use overhead lights for this. For example in my setup I use my lightstrip on the back of the TV, 2 Hue Play Bars off to the right pointed in my fireplace sitting about 20 inches off the ground, a lamp in the corner on the left and then my 2 end table lamps on each side of the couch and that provides me with lights in all directions to provide directional response lighting from the SYNC Box without being overbearing.

Pricey But Cool With a Few Cons

Let’s get it out of the way, the lighting effect is awesome and it works really well in terms of syncing with the content on your TV. Now I’m terms of price and features, that’s where this lacks. The price is extremely high for what features the box lacks. For one, there is no remote to change between the connections and that can sometimes cause an issue I feel if you accidentally turned on a different console or in my case FireTV on another port. And perhaps the biggest disappointment is while this does support HDR and 4K passthrough, it does not support Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision or HDR10. More than likely that will come at a later date when they release an upgraded version but at this point when those formats are so prominent in home theater it just feels like a huge oversight on their end. Especially for the price.

This really adds to the home entertainment experience. I was surprised how much we enjoy the backlighting synced to a movie. When not synced to television you can have it sync to your favorite music or just set a light scene in your home. For the holidays we have these and other Hue lights in a scene for Christmas. It’s nice to say “Hey Siri set scene to Bright Christmas” and have everything turn in with our lights in red and green. It is expensive. If not for a good sale I might not have taken a chance on it. Very glad that I did.
