I installed the Phillips Hue Solo Lightstrip in a bedroom and it casts an ample glow, perfect for late-night television viewing or relaxing before sleep. Upon activating these lights, I was impressed by their luminosity. The setup was a breeze: install the lightstrip, plug it in using the power adapter (which is unnecessarily large and clunky by the way), and install the Hue app if you desire. It was effortlessly detected and operable by my Homekit and Alexa, so A+ for integration. The app promptly recognized the lights also. While the app features are somewhat basic—lacking the ability to display multiple colors simultaneously or varied effects—it does offer a mode that cycles through the color spectrum and dimmability. It’s important to note that while the Hue Solo lightstrip can be cut, there are no options to extend or reorient the strip once severed. The only thing you can do is throw the excess pieces away. The strip cannot be lengthened either, so it is better to purchase a longer strip than necessary and cut it to your desired size. The approximate 15 feet length of this strip is ideal for those who need a continuous, unbroken line of light. The lightstrip is affixed using double-sided tape, with no alternative mounting options like clips or brackets provided. The longevity of the adhesive’s effectiveness is uncertain as mine has already started to loosen in some areas, so I suggest using a stronger adhesive or clips. Overall, the illumination and integration of the lightstrip is great. However, I think the price is too high for what really is a basic lightstrip without many options or flexibility. Even if you have other Hue products, like I do. But the lack of options may be why Phillips calls it Hue Solo – because it’s not meant to “join” other lightstrips.

    Bending Issues (pictured)

The Philips Hue Solo Light strip is a great option to improve home lighting providing vibrant colors and customization. It seems like the ideal solution for anyone looking to add ambiance to their living room, kitchen, or a specific piece of furniture or entertainment setup. However, after using the light strip, I found that while it excels in many areas, several shortcomings prevented me from fully utilizing it as intended. The light strip comes packaged in an easy to open box and the strip itself feels sturdy (too sturdy) with a good balance between flexibility and durability. It’s designed to be easy to install with its adhesive backing, which allows you to stick it to various surfaces. Whether you’re looking to place it behind your TV, under kitchen cabinets, or along furniture, the strip seems well-suited for a variety of setups. My first issue arose during installation. The light strip is not designed to bend at sharp angles, such as 90-degree corners, without compromising its structure. I encountered this problem while trying to install the light strip on the back of a cabinet. The inability to make sharp bends meant that I had to adjust my original plan and accept a less-than-perfect setup, which was disappointing. This limitation makes it challenging to achieve a seamless look, particularly in spaces where you need the light strip to navigate around corners or edges. Another issue that came up after installation was the durability of the adhesive. Despite thoroughly cleaning the surface before attaching the light strip, I noticed that it began to unstick in certain areas in less than a week. This was particularly frustrating because although I pressed the strip back into place it came back down again. Although the summer, my home is fully air conditioned 24/7 with low humidity. To maintain the strip in its intended position, I will need to buy a different adhesive or mounting brackets which was not ideal. This issue is significant and made me question its long-term life in my living room. Despite the installation challenges, the Philips Hue Solo light strip delivers when it comes to brightness and color performance. The light strip is super bright, even in daylight. At night, I found that I need to dim the lights because of how bright they can be. This brightness makes the light strip suitable for a variety of uses and in any room (even with lots of windows). The colors are customizable, offering tons of shades to choose from. Whether you want a soft, warm white for a cozy atmosphere or a vibrant color for a more dynamic effect, the light strip provides it all. The ability to customize the color and brightness through the app is great and is powered through bluetooth. I like the app with its ease of use. The app makes it simple to change colors, adjust brightness, and select from a variety of light modes. You can set scenes and schedule lighting changes. My favorite mode is the fireplace setting. I can’t wait to use it on my entertainment set which has a electric fireplace. I had to update the lights trip to gain access to additional light modes, such as flashes, and glowing effects. The Philips Hue Solo Lightstrip integrates seamlessly with various smart home systems, including Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit. This compatibility allows for voice control and easy integration with other smart devices, making it a versatile addition to any smart home setup. The Philips Hue Solo Lightstrip is a product with many strengths including brightness, color, and smart home integration. It offers customization and a variety of lighting modes that can improve your living space. However, its limitations, such as the inability to bend at sharp angles, adhesive issues, may prevent it from being the perfect solution for every user.

Ordered an open box light strip and received a damaged product. It’s a cool concept but it’s also cheaper on Amazon for a brand new one :/

    Light Up Your Living Spaces

If a technology device has lights, I'm immediately interested. Since I already have a Philips outdoor lightstrip (which is really cool) I, of course, was super excited to get this Hue Solo (indoor) Lightstrip, as well. Initial setup proved to be a bit tricky, at first. But after several tries, I got it done. I opted to use and connect to this lightstrip via Bluetooth only, as I didn't want to have the added expense of having to buy a Philips Hue Bridge. For my needs, the simple features available in the Philips Hue app, are good enough. If I change my mind and want to unlock more options, that is always available to me; for an additional purchase. The Philips Hue app allows you to choose from many different themes in the Hue scene gallery, and save your favorites. There's also the option to set up a 'routine' to use light for waking up or going to sleep. I'm well familiar with this as I have many different types of light devices that do similar things. While in use, the lightstrip does get very slightly warm-ish, and there is a particular "plasticky" smell to it, which was especially noticable when I first began using the Hue lightstrip right out of the box. I will say that the sticky strips aren't as good as I'd hoped for what they're meant to do. I'm not sure, over time, how well they will be able to hold the lightstrip in place. But I guess we'll see. If you do intend to cut the lightstrip so as to 'change direction at a corner,' for instance, you will need to use special connectors. None of which were included with this lightstrip. Overall, this Philips Hue Solo Lightstrip is a fun, and relatively simple, way to add decorative light to your living spaces. Be that, a gamer setup, mood lighting in a bedroom or living room area, around bookshelves in a home office, along the underside of a platform bed, or even add a lit pathway along the baseboards of a hallway ... there are many many more creative possibilities.

As soon as I plugged these lights in, I was wowed by how bring they are. The Philips hue strip light is so very much brighter than anything else I have tried from Amazon. They are also dimmable, so you can have any ambiance to enjoy. They feel like premium strip lights with the silicone sleeve that covers the lights. Maybe that silicone cover could be frosted so it would be easier to look at, as it is now, you have to hide it somewhere. Setup was seamless. Plug in the huge 80's inspired power brick and download the hue app if you don't have it already. The app found the lights immediately and then you can simply ask alexa (if you want) to discover new devices. I like the fact I didn't have to link another account to her for them to work. So far she has controlled all aspects of the light. On & off, brightness level, set any color you can think of. The app is pretty basic, I was hoping to have multiple colors change at a time or have different effects. (spoiled with twinkly) the closest I found is it has one option to cycle thru the colors. I was excited to see an option to sync to your TV but nothing would happen. After researching online, you simply need to purchase a $250 sync box. Yeah, no thank you! This lightstrip is cuttable but keep in mind Philips offers no options to extend or reattach the strip in a different direction. Once it's cut, that's it. Only great if you want a long straight line. Also they only have double sided tape to install, no clips or brackets. Although it is nice and bright, I feel the price is too high for such a basic lightstrip without many options. If you have more hue products this would be a good addition.

I've got some mixed feelings about this Philips Hues light strip. On the plus side, it's really well made. The strip feels sturdy, and the colors are incredibly bright and vibrant. It definitely makes a big difference in the look of my room. But there are a few downsides that bug me. First off, it has to be plugged into a regular electrical outlet. Unlike other brands that use USB, this one isn’t as flexible, and finding a spot near an outlet was a bit of a hassle. Also, to get all the cool features, you need to buy their proprietary hub. Without it, you can't fully control the colors or connect it to other smart home devices, which was a letdown, especially since it's already pricey. Speaking of price, it's quite a bit more expensive than other light strips. I thought for the higher cost, it would come with more features right out of the box. Instead, You have to spend more money to get the hub. The quality and color are top-notch, but the added costs and limitations make it hard to recommend over cheaper options that are more flexible. If you're okay with spending more and getting the hub, it's a solid choice, but there are definitely more budget-friendly alternatives out there.

Reliable but Lacking in Flexibility Color-wise

The Hue Solo Lightstrip comes to the extensive Hue lineup as a 30+ foot option for those looking to spice up the lighting in their space of choice. The usual positives apply her as with all Hue products; you get scene integration, settings flexibility, and industry leading reliability. However, given the options on the market for lightstrips right now, the Solo feels lacking for one huge reason, which I'll get to in a minute... Again, being a Hue product, you know what you're going to get in terms of setup and subsequent functionality. It's a plug and play affair here, literally, for those with existing Hue setups and bridges. This is how I've utilized my Solo, though it also supports bluetooth only operation, allowing you to connect directly to the lightstrip and subvert the bridge. In my experience, the bridge helps reliability in a tangible way that makes it worthwhile, but if you're not feeling it, you don't need them. Beyond that, I was easily able to integrate the Solo into my existing rooms and scenes. This could not have been easier, which is a huge bonus when compared to some other options on the market. However, a few of those options provide something that this does not... The main downfall of this lightstrip is that it doesn't support simultaneous multiple colors. For instance, in a perfect world, the Solo would allow you to utilize all 33 feet of it to create an array of color options; for instance, where the first 10 feet could be blue, with a transition into red for the next 10 feet, with a transition back into blue. What you get instead is a lightstrip that has to be a singular uniform color. This is unfortunate, again, given the fact that this is a feature of many other options on the market, and overall limits flexibility in my opinion. In summation, if you're looking for a single color lightstrip and want the most reliable lighting ecosystem on the market, the Solo is a great option. It brings along with it the plethora of benefits that come with all Hue products, and makes for a great product. I just can't look past the inability of this strip to show multiple colors simultaneously.

Long on length not in features

This extended version of the Hue light strip offers a longer length, which is a great improvement for lighting larger areas without needing extensions or multiple strips. It’s also convenient that the strip can be permanently trimmed to fit your space. Bluetooth functionality means you don’t need a bridge, but you’ll need one to access all features. However, the main downside is that this strip still only supports a single color at a time, with no multi-zone functionality. Other brands offer light strips with multiple colors, so it’s disappointing that Hue hasn’t added this feature to this light strip, especially considering the premium price. The build quality is excellent, but the limited functionality makes the strip feel lacking in comparison to competitors. Overall, the extended length allowed me to light my room’s perimeter seamlessly, which I appreciated. Still, I wish Hue had included more advanced features, as the product would be far more compelling with multi-zone capabilities.
