Great accessory for the Hue system

I've been meaning to get a wall switch for my hue lights for a while now. I kinda figured that the Tap switch was going to be my only option until this came along with a much more attractive price point and more conventional look. And it works great. That said there are a couple downsides to choosing this over the Tap: -Battery. As in this needs one. It's a minor thing since the battery included will no doubt last forever, but it should be mentioned that this is not a kinetic energy powered device like the Tap. Of course for some people this is probably a plus, since the Tap does require you to hammer it a little to work. -Less Programmable. The Tap is interesting because it lets you pretty much program the multiple buttons to do whatever you want. This one, though, only allows 1 scene to be stored at a time. I'll admit I'm a little disappointed that there isn't a cycle option or the like, but I suppose that's what the phone is for. That said, it's also got some serious advantages over the Tap: -Integrated Dimmer. Why the Tap doesn't have this is beyond me. The ability to adjust the brightness on your scenes is a great feature of this thing. -More portable. The actual switch unit is held in place with magnets, making it easy to pop it off and carry around with you. I have mine mounted right by my door so when I get in I can turn the lights on, pop it in my pocket, and head into the living room where I can then adjust the brightness to whatever I'm going to be doing next, be that cleaning, hosting people, or just dimming them down to watch some TV. Then I take it into my bedroom, turn off all the lights, and leave it on my night stand. Next morning I pop it back into its place by the door when I leave. Hard to do with the larger "hockey puck" design of the Tap. -Conventional Design. This thing blends in much better with the existing lightswitches than the Tap ever could. So yeah. Both the Tap and this Dimmer are fine accessories to the Hue lighting system. On balance I think I do like this one more for the reasons listed above, most notably the portability. That said I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed that a 2nd generation or software patch will be coming eventually to allow us more options to customize how it works.

The Lutron Caseta wall switch fits better in a standard wall socket, which was my use case.

    Great Addition to Hue System

Pros: -Easy sync with Hue hub -Great customization of dimmer switch buttons -Easy way to make the Hue system friendly for guests and non-smartphone users Cons: -Sometimes disconnects from Hue bridge momentarily -Button customizations are a bit buried in the new Hue android app I purchased this product about 4 months ago to add to my existing hue lighting system which consists of a second gen Hue hub, 3 color bulbs, Iris, and Bloom. It was surprisingly easy to sync with the Hue app and hub. I mounted it right next to another set of switches in the living room and it looks like it's been there all along. It's also a nice touch that the switch itself is portable when needed. It's connected to the wall using an outlet surround/cover which connects to the remote by magnets. I have not really carried it around like a remote, but it's nice to have the option. Users can program the on switch with up to 5 preset light scenes. Just keep tapping to change all lights to the next setting. The dimmer buttons up and down are very accurate and it seems like they're only limited by the lights connect. It dims in small increments all the way down to a very faint glow. The switch has been very responsive overall. Button presses change the current light settings almost immediately. The only real complaint I have (and it's small) is that there have been a couple of occasions where the dimmer switch has disconnected itself from the Hub. My living room is 15ft by 25ft, but I also have 5 lights, the dimmer switch, and my wireless router in this same area. Based on what I understand about how the "web of connectivity" links all hue devices together this connection issue shouldn't happen. Most times I can hit on/off and the switch reconnects, but once I had to fully reset the switch to get it working again. This issue is why I've rated it just shy of 5 stars and I'd rate it 4.5 if I could! Over all this was a great purchase and blows away the other hue tap round remote that I tried first. It's just as versatile and much more use-friendly. This product is for you if you have others in your household or guests who aren't so familiar with smart home tech and smartphones. It takes your smart lighting system and reduces it back to a simple light switch that people of all ages and tech levels can understand. It does all of this while adding even more customization and maintaining all the reasons you spent so much on a Hue smart lighting system to begin with.

Very cheap material. Won't replace a light switch. I would recommend going with Lutron even though it's more expensive.

Great addition to a hue system

I've been looking for a light switch to go along with my hue lights in my living room. Since I have kids and a wife who don't want to deal with always using their phone to turn on lights, this solved that problem perfectly. I used to have a switch for these lights, but I just wired it to always be on and then put this switch over it. You can turn it on and off, and dim. The nice thing I didn't know is that when you hit the on button, it turns it to a specific scene of your choosing, and then if you hit it again, it can go to a difference scene. So I have it setup to turn on a low blue lights to watch TV when it is hit twice. You can do this for up to 5 scenes. Really went above and beyond my expectations. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because it doesn't screw in like a normal wall switch would, which made it hard to mount (especially over the hole where the wires were since the size of the device is just that big, you can't use their tape). Otherwise it is perfect. Easy to pair and use. I also love how you can pull off the switch and carry it around like a remote.

Much faster than pulling out your phone and loading the app. No delay or lag turning on/off lights. The lights turn on using the last previously used scene. Highly recommended!

What a great solution to a minor problem with the hue system. Now, it is even easier to control and I almost want to replace all my light switches with these dimmer controls.

    Exactly what I needed

I had WeMo Smart Bulbs which doesn't have a remote switch option, and it makes using very annoying. You basically cannot turn the bulbs off with your old toggle switch (once they're off from wall switch, your smart devices can't turn them on). I switched to Hues because of the availability of this device. This remote replaces the wall switch so I can turn my lights off more conveniently.

It's a wireless light switch to control Hue lights

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

It's a simple switch. You get five scenes you can toggle through by hitting the on button. Additionally, you can control brightness of the light(s) you control with it. It would be nice if it used adhesive strips the could be replaced, however, the magnets that hold the actual controller in place is plenty strong to hold it to metal. So, I have it on the side of the refrigerator high enough that kids cannot reach it and lose it. After that's no longer a concern, I may try to come up with a mounting system that consists of a plate and metal or small magnets that I can mount using removable adhesive strips so I won't have to drill holes in the wall or use the strips that you can't replace too easy after you use them.

I hated the locations of my switches in my new home. I'm so glad I have this affordable Hue dimmer to easily replace my switches. I figure I've saved money by not needing an electrician to add new switches.

    Great Switch

This switch can be mounted to a wall using the included 3M adhesive tape on the back, just like a regular light switch, for those neanderthals who can't deal with technology and need a switch on the wall (me sometimes :-). It has on, off and dimmer buttons. It also pops off the wall (magnetic) and can be used as a remote. Works really well. I capped off the old light switch and covered it with this.
