Has the rare pre-outs
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The key feature for me was pre-outs to RCA connectors, needed for my FM transmitter. I like to play the same music throughout the house and even in the shower. These days, receivers do not have tape recorder in-out because of DRM. While the pre-outs do function, they are intended for a second amp/speaker setup. So if you turn down the sound on the receiver, the level on the pre-outs goes down, too. If you plug in a headphone (to the phone jack) the pre-out cuts off! Not ideal but tolerable. It is an excellent receiver with plenty of inputs, which is very helpful if you want to have several streaming sticks (Chromecast, Roku, Fire) and use the receiver remote to switch between them.

Dissapointed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this receiver in January of 2015 for a good price of $349. The sound quality is excellent, and the picture quality of the video processing is also excellent.... when it works. The HDMI switching is very slow, and recently when connected to a DirecTV DVR, the picture goes blank when playing and fast forwarding through a recorded show. I've currently ran the HDMI connection from the DVR to the TV directly and everything works fine. Not how it is supposed to work. Very disappointed in Pioneer.

Yet Another Pioneer Great
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have owned Pioneer home (and car) audio for over 20 years, and I have rarely been disappointed. This unit replaced a Pioneer VSX-1015-TX (purchased from BB); the 1015 is still working very well, but it had no HDMI connections or HD audio capability. This new 1124 has the wonderful, warm Pioneer sound that I've come to know and love. Ease of setup is fair to good; using the microphone, it's possible to be up and running pretty quickly, though I have made some modifications to the MCACC's initial settings. Make no mistake, this receiver is *highly* customizable, and the learning curve is a bit on the steep side. Once it's dialed in, however, the sound is crystal clear, with a level of detail even the 1015 couldn't quite match. Rated at 90 watts/channel, it should be plenty powerful for the average home theater setting; we have tall ceilings and an open floorplan to our kitchen, and we have no problems with sound projection. Many others have pointed out the multiple features of this receiver, but I have to say that I've always been a fan of learning remotes; competitors in this price range usually provide only a universal remote with programmable codes for other devices, but the 1124 can learn individual commands from other remotes. I just love that. I haven't yet tried the Internet Radio function, but I have used Pandora quite a bit, and it works beautifully. I'm uncertain what Pandora's streaming quality is, but the "S.Retrv" feature "fills out" mp3 files so that they sound almost as good as lossless files - it really is amazing how good it sounds. Blu-ray movies have to come to life since we moved to the 1124; the 1015 sounded "good", but the level of detail provided by the HD audio formats really took me by surprise. Watching the new "Godzilla" (DTS-HD Master), I was blown away - the sound was unbelievable - every guttural detail of the creature's roar was crystal clear! I didn't know what I was missing, since the older 1015 was downmixing everything to regular Dolby Digital and DTS. The one hitch we've had is an intermittent issue with our Dish DVR (ViP612); every so often, the HDMI video passthrough to the TV would "choke", causing the video to flicker off and on (though the sound was fine). From what I researched, there can be issues with the HDCP handshake between the Dish DVR, the receiver (not just this one, but many), and the TV. I've since connected the Dish DVR directly to the TV, and run the audio from the DVR to the 1124 via an optical connection. I don't believe this is a fault with the receiver, but a problem with the Dish DVR. The price as of today is a C-note less than I paid a couple of months ago, so if you're one the fence, I recommend giving this receiver a try. It's versatile, powerful, and highly customizable - it might take a little patience, but I've found that it's definitely worth it!

So Far so good.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this receiver last night to upgrade a Harmon Kardon that was a beginner level and not really equipped for today's technology. I was originally looking at a lower level Yamaha and Onkyo as some of my equipment is still older and not HDMI compatible. But, this unit was on sale for $200 off the original price and thus was priced comparable to the units I was looking at. The up-conversion of the non-HDMI inputs allow it work with my older components without needing a ton of extra cords. I got everything set up and so far it's working great. I especially like that the remote is learning and can control all of my other components. I had also leaned towards the Pioneer because I've owned 2 in the past with good results and the power output is better than the others. If you're fairly tech savvy, I would recommend setting up the speakers yourself instead of using the built-in auto-setup system. I don't have a subwoofer but have two large front speakers. I had to play with the settings a bit to get the power and bass output that I wanted. But, I found a set-up that I like through some trial and error and am very pleased so far.

just doesn't work right
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Got it all hooked up and began with Netflix through the PC. The volume will be set at 28 but when a scene changes and the noise rises it does not adjust so the decibels stay @ 28 even though the receiver says it should still be at 28. Internet radio changes channels whenever it wants to. locks up or freezes and must be turned off (sometimes manually) and restarted. Channels (HDMI) sometimes don't pick up on the hardware connected until the channel is changed up or down and back again, i.e. you want to watch the DVD player so you turn it all on and the receiver does not connect to the DVD (no signal). Go up to BD then back to DVD and now it will pick up the signal. This is not an issue where we turned the TV on too soon. We tried that. We took it to the Geek Squad who sent it out to their repair. They reset it to factory settings and said it worked. It didn't. We took it back and showed the store GS that it still did not work. They sent it out again. Another two - three weeks later. The store got it back. This time we wanted to be sure that it did work so we tried it out in the store. It still did not work. It froze up almost immediately. We are now looking for another brand to replace this one.

Never Buy Open Box from BestBuy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought an open box deal from BestBuy. Salesperson said they would honor all warranties on open box. Brought home, hooked up and the only channel that works is the internet/radio. The HDMI video comes through, but have to turn the unit up to 90 to even hear the slightest sound from the unit. Hooked up my old Yamaha, perfect. Reset the Pioneer unit, did everything suggest. Brought back to BestBuy same day and they would nit stand behind their promise. They would not fix under warranty or replaced. Not what the salesperson told us. Very disappointed in both the Pioneer and BestBuy's handing of the situation.

Junk
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Set it up, and powered it up. Selected Satelite TV, and for the first few seconds there was sound, but the picture would flicker on for a fraction of a second followed by black screen for a few seconds. It did this for about 30 seconds, and everything became normal. Then 24 hours later I got black screen again. Playing with it for about 30 min with no result earned this unit a trip back to best buy for a refund. I'll go for a different brand. Just one other note, as mentioned in another review the set up menu is pretty clunky. This combined with audio customization that consisted mostly of preset patterns with little or no room for tailoring it to suit the user.

Not happy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Waisted 2 days hooking it up and was working then the amp fried. I have been a long time pioneer owner and I'm very disappointed. Feel like the quality has been compromised for the sake of pushing a name.
