Customers are saying

Customers express satisfaction with the PlayStation 4's impressive graphics, enjoyable controller, and ease of use. Many also praise its performance and find it to be a good value for the price. However, some customers point out the lack of backwards compatibility with previous PlayStation consoles and disappointingly short battery life of the controller. The absence of a bundled camera was also noted as a drawback by some users.

Impressed with the speed and the fact that it is much quieter. Looking forward to other new games coming in early 2014. Reduced size is nice, controller is much more comfortable and the touch pad is an interesting addition. Not a fan of the smaller/ flat L2 and R2 buttons, they almost feel on the fragile side. Played Call of Duty Ghosts and AC 4 and like them, graphics are sharp, clean, what you'd expect. People that do not play a lot may not notice a difference from 720p and 1080p but there is. Sharpness, depth of color, shadows, and speed of in game play has improved. Overall I'm digging my PS4 and was worth the wait!

lets start with the basics. the ps4 is a good looking machine, it is much smaller than I thought it would be, it fits very easily inside my entertainment center with room to spare. It is pretty streamline with just a hdmi port, power port, digital audio and 2 front usb ports. there really should be a rear one. the new interface is fast, easy to use, not at all complicated and fully available during game play. the dualshock 4 feels great in your hand and I think the touch pad will be very cool in the future. Over all, this is a very cool and fun machine. greatness is here.

Here we go folks, the opening salvo in the next-gen console wars have begun in earnest - this is no warning shot, the first reviews of the PS4 are in. But those reviews are long man. They take time to read, time you don't have. Time you could using to do something else. But don't worry, we've done the leg work for you. We've read through a number of the longer reviews and collated some of the more commonly held opinions: The console itself is light (6lbs) and sleek, making it easily portable to a friend's house. It's really quiet, thanks partially to mandatory installs meaning you don't have to listen to the disc spin while in-game. The loudest it gets is around 45 decibels if you get up close. The controller is slightly heavier, has better sticks and can output all game audio through your headphones. Gaming on the PS4 is very social. Expect reams of updates from your friends and what they've been doing everytime you go online. The sharing via Twitch features work well, letting your friends and fans connect, post comments and chat among themselves while they watch you play. You can start playing most games after about 30 seconds of installation. If you want to play completely offline, you'll need to turn off WiFi. There is no offline mode. Menus are streamlined and look good. There's also a lot less clutter in the interface. However you can convert to a more traditional, busy style if you want. The internal hardware is really powerful, but it can get quite warm during extended gameplay and it draws upwards of 110w of power at the busiest of times. Web browsing on the PS4 has received some criticism, partly because using a controller to do so is difficult. There's also no support for a mouse at the moment. Voice commands and facial recognition with the PlayStation camera are excellent. When it comes to the games, things aren't quite so glowing, with most reviewers suggesting that the best ones are games you can get elsewhere already. Killzone Shadow fall and Knack have both taken a beating, with reviewers suggesting that while very pretty, the mechanics and gameplay are tired and repetitive. Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed 4 and Lego Marvel Super Heroes have all been quite well received, but not much has changed between generations of hardware. The only real stand-out title is Resogun, which was described by one reviewer as the only PS4 launch game that truly feels next-gen.

    Amazing console!

I can't stress enough how great this console is. The graphics are a big upgrade from the PS3. I've read reviews from some saying it's not a big leap, well they must have not seen the PS4 in action! Games like Killzone: Shadowfall and Need For Speed look absolutely gorgeous on this machine. Multiplayer is smooth and responsive thanks to its processor. COD Ghosts plays really smooth with virtually no respawn times and smooth framerate. The interface is what you'd expect from SONY. Usual colors and similar visuals from the PS3 only with nicer fonts. However it's easy to use and very functional. Easy to navigate through and choose whatever it is you want to do. The controller feels great. Best ever in terms of how it feels in the hand and quality. The only issue I found is the odd placement of the "options" button. You have to use it quite a bit (especially in Ghosts) and I found that I miss it too often. The touchpad is a nice addition by the way and works really well in Killzone. Overall I am very happy with my PS4. Exceeded my expectations. Can't beat the $399 price tag for what you get. Oh and by the way, and I don't know why I haven't read this in any article, voice commands work without the camera! I bought a turtle beach headset (wired) and voice commands work really well. This is a great console and would highly recommend it!

Searched all over And found the ps4 while my other two kids received xbox one on Xmas morning. Ps 4 never even worked so Xmas was not great for him. Two others playing happily on xbox one. After over an hour on hold, Sony offered to overnight a box for return because best buy wont take it back (really??). After my son waited daily the box never comes, the employee did incorrectly. Starting over with waiting an hour for a rep to answer from sony He wants to sell me the warranty for 60! Still no ps4 and they aren't even authorized to provide my son with a free game or points for his disappointment. Sony and best buy have been disappointing. Best buy should back the products they sell.

    Genuine Upgrade

As a non-traditional gamer, the decision between choosing Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One was not necessarily a given. Both consoles sport similar features at different prices with multiple consumers thrown into the researching chaos to accurately pin-point which product best fits their desires. Comparisons aside, this PS4 has fulfilled most of my expectations for the price. The console itself is attractive with its sleek minimalist footprint and its modern appearance set against the layout of my living room. The power-on/eject buttons are touch sensitive and flush with the face of the console. The only accents on the hardware are the PS logo and the glossy covering on the top side of the machine. When powered on, the console greets me with a PlayStation logo and instantly displays my options for entertainment. When loading a disc however, the modern aesthetic is interrupted by the very mechanic/industrial sound of the disc loading into the machine. I didn't find this sound to be annoying, its was just, unexpected, given the console's immediate impressions considering its appearance. Once the disc is loaded, you might be surprised to find out these new consoles require games to be 'installed' into the hard-drive. As a disclaimer however, some games will allow you to play while still being downloaded; the download must reach a certain percentage in order for this feature to be enjoyed. The first game I installed (GTA5) took over an hour, but the wait was worth it. The power of this machine is evident in the graphical output along with the theatrical depth of sound it executes. Over a month of enjoying this machine and it continues to impress me with its leaps and bounds over the previous generation. I did not seek Multi-player when purchasing this product however, I have noticed the PlayStation 4 network go down for maintenance over this same time period. I'm unaffected by this but as a consumer, you should be aware before purchasing. Normally, the network returns to a functional performing level within an acceptable amount of time (i.e. 12 hours). The game library is still being expanded but I've found enough to find entertainment when I require it. There are games for all ages that cover every console on the market, but I highly suggest the consumer researches the exclusive content on this machine. This is where I found the PS4 outperformed its competition. Its exclusive content broadens its reach across multiple consumers over multiple genres, from family friendly to mature themes. Overall, its a great pick-up and play platform, there's enough here to be enjoyed by the casual gamer along with the dedicated gamers out there. If you're looking into the PlayStation 4, I highly recommend its value and performance for you.

    PlayStation Enters the Next-Gen

    Posted .

The PlayStation 4 is an evolution of the familiar PlayStation brand while, at the same time, an homage to their storied history. Angular and slim like the PlayStation 2 while adapting and refining the user interface of the PlayStation 3, the PS4 leaps ahead with the unique social interaction element that will be the game-changer of 'next-gen' consoles. The new Dynamic Menu user interface is fast, convenient, and easy to use, and the ability to expand the games you've downloaded or bought in store to see what your friends have done, what new content is available, and who is broadcasting is an awesome addition. Party chat finally makes the once-barren PS3 friends network a livelier place, and the inclusion of a headset in the box allows anyone to plug into their Dualshock 4 and connect instantly (though you may want to pay a little extra to get a better headset; any with a standard headphone jack will do). The Dualshock 4 is leaps and bounds better than the PS3's Sixaxis and Dualshock 3 models, and that's coming from a fan of the latter's configuration. New features like the touchpad, light bar, and Share button, as well as refinements to the shoulder buttons and triggers, and concave dual analog sticks, make it the best PlayStation controller yet. The ability to broadcast your games via Twitch or Ustream, upload clips to Facebook, or share screenshots via Facebook and Twitter, is a huge addition, allowing players to see what's good, what's not so good, and whose personality shines online. Real name friends is great, as well, no longer keeping you wondering just who Beatballer77 is. There are some downsides, like a lack of entertainment options--no HBO Go, ESPN, BBC, or NFL apps--and a short battery life for the Dualshock 4s, anywhere between 5-8 hours depending on play sessions. On launch day, there are only 24 games available, including the built-in Playroom demo for the PlayStation Camera, so your library may not be very robust until 2014. But with games like Infamous: Second Son, Watch_Dogs, Driveclub, The Order: 1886, and a new Uncharted on the way, there's a lot to be excited about.

Sony's New Console Hits a Home Run

    Posted .

I had high hopes for the PS4, and it has exceeded my expectations. The PS4 delivers the best graphics available on a console. Unlike other consoles, it renders games at the same resolution as your HD TV, providing the sharpest image possible. Games run at a buttery smooth frame rate. The graphics are amazing compared to other, older consoles. The controller is very comfortable and easy to use. The touch pad is easily reached and becomes quite intuitive. The only negative is the battery life is shorter than I expected, lasting only one or two days. Making it worse, it has to be plugged into the PS4 to recharge. You can't just use a standard USB charger. Sony made a deliberate effort to make the PS4 experience "immediate." For example, when you first play a game from a disc, it takes about 45 seconds before you can start playing the game. On the competing console, it takes 10 to 15 minutes before you can start playing your new game. After that, game updates happen automatically overnight. You never again have to wait for an update before you can play. Sony paid a lot of attention to detail with the PS4. It truly is the best place to play.

    Great System

I have a launch-day PS4 and so far I absolutely love it. The redesigned interface is clean and easy to navigate. Your most recent played games and used "apps" migrate to the left of the horizontal list. When you highlight a thumbnail for a game, for example, the screen populates with detailed information regarding that particular game. This is a neat feature of the interface. Anyone familiar with the chat system on the PS3 knows it was terrible. Now on the PS4, you are able to cross-game chat in a private party. Inviting friends and joining party chat is a breeze. This is one of my favorite features of the new system. The new chat system supports 8 people in a party. If you are coming from Xbox 360, this system is very similar and I can honestly say I like Sony's chat system better than Microsoft's. If you are upgrading from a PS3, this will likely be one of your favorite features as well. The controller is nearly perfect. The totally redesigned controller fits in your hands thanks to it being slightly wider. The area that your palms rest on has been extended to make the controller more ergonomic. The L/R triggers are redesigned so they no longer accidentally press when setting the controller down. Also, each trigger has a small curve that your finger rests into perfectly. The L/R bumpers been tweaked and are perfectly positioned above the triggers. The sticks are shorter but more responsive. I really like the new design of the thumb tips on each stick, however, I would have liked to see some sort of "grip" on the top similar to the Xbox One controller. Beyond that, my fingers feel more stable on the sticks and I have really enjoyed using the controller. I even prefer this controller over the Xbox One's. Sony made a good choice to allow game developers input on how the controller was designed. Installing games is quick and painless. I like being able to partially download a game and start playing. There is no more waiting for the whole game to download and install before you can launch it. Another nice feature is the auto-update for games and system firmware. I keep my system in standby mode, so when updates become available, the system automatically download and installs them. In your "notification" area of the interface you can see the recent activities; this is where you can see what updates were automatically installed. The new share button on the remote captures screen shots or allows you to broadcast live game play. I played around with this a little and it was pretty cool. Broadcasting your game play requires you to set up a Twitch or UStream account (which can be done through the PS4 interface). Setting up this feature only took a minute and I was broadcasting. Other gamers can then watch your live broadcast and even post comments as you play. Aesthetically, the PS4 is beautifully designed. When in standby, the LED bar glows orange. During boot up, the bar pulses blue, and when fully powered up, its white The unit is small and sleek and looks great on the entertainment center. Other thoughts: The controller battery life is shorter than the old PS3 remotes. I attribute this to the light bar in the new controller as there is no way to turn the light off. The PS4 will continue to charge the controller using it's USB ports if the PS4 if left in standby mode. The playstation app is great but lacks some features at launch. Eventually this is going to support second-screen. Currently, I can see all of my invites, notifications, and messages using the app. I am also able to controller my PS4 when connected to the same network my PS4 is on. Getting messages and sending messages can be done through the app or the PS4. This is nice as I often receive messages when offline, but I will get them on my phone. I can then respond quickly, which is important being that I am clan leader for our Ghosts clan. Overall, I am extremely happy with all aspects of the new gaming system. The interface, graphics, game play, controller...everything. Sony really got this one right. I would highly recommend this system to everyone thinking about upgrading to a next gen console. Oh, and Resogun is a blast to play (free with PSN)!!

    Solid Console

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The PS4 is a solid successor to the PS3. It is noticable more powerful in the regard that everything runs very smooth on it. The interface never really lags and the games load quickly. The UI is also more streamlined. Overall the hardware is a great step up from the PS3 and I cant wait to see what developers do with it moving forward. The controller is a much more refined version of the classic PS controller. It feels very familiar but has some nice changes. The triggers are a huge upgrade and the joysticks are more spread apart so your thumbs dont bump. The touch pad in the middle also works surprisingly well and has potential to do some interesting things. The games right now a somewhat lacking but the few that are out are solid. Not perfect but solid for launch titles. Everything runs very smooth and I dont think ive ever seen the framerate drop below what is said to be 60 fps. The resolution is great as well if you are into that kind of thing. The only major gripe I have is the mandatory installs. With only a 500GB harddrive, you can easily fill it up from a modest library of games as each game is anywhere from 20-50 GB. The upside to that is the hard drive is upgradable. Even if you dont upgrade your harddrive is easy to uninstall games without losing anything if you do run out of space. That is very much a saving grace. Overall i think this is a great console and has much potential. It isnt perfect yet but there are no major problems with it. The failure rate seems to be fairly standard and from what i understand, the ones that do fail are replaced by Sony but dont quote me on that. Again, solid console and i look forward to the future of it.

    Excellent console

I originally had the XB1 preordered, but they lost me at their presentation with the limitations and the way they treated their customers. I instead got this on launch day along with AC4, BF4, Ghosts, and Killzone and I am extremely happy with it. It's a very powerful machine, half the size of my PS3 and the games look amazing. The UI takes a little getting used to and the game library is a little small but that is expected during the launch period. Setup for PSN and my home network was easy to do. I would recommend hooking it up with an ethernet cable rather than with Wifi so you get better speeds online. I also purchased a vita to test out the remote play and second screen features. It is a great companion device but remote play works best if you have a fast, reliable internet connection for both the PS4 and Vita. I have only had the Vita for a day and am still on the fence about it. Many people like the game library for it but I may end up getting a second controller instead and returning it. The touchpad on the PS4 remote is very new and took some getting used to as well as the share button which is fun. The hard drive is easily replaceable and I would recommend upgrading it to a 1TB right away as you will fill up the space quickly. While the XB1 is also a great console and I may end up getting it in the next couple of years, I see it more as an all in one media center than a console dedicated to gaming. Along with both parties presentations earlier this year, I think this is why Sony is currently ahead of MS.
