PS5 vs Xbox Series X
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently purchased a PS5 and have had the Xbox SX for several months. These are just my thoughts on what you might want to consider when deciding which console to buy. First, the elephant in the room here would be Sony’s Exclusives vs Microsoft’s Exclusives and Game Pass. Sony has some great titles, but some of their franchises are getting a little old. With Microsoft, they have the same aging problem with some of their franchises, but they have one huge advantage! With Gamepass, you get the majority of Microsoft’s 1st party titles on day 1, included in the subscription. While looking through the store on each console, I noticed something very interesting… about half the Optimized for PS5 titles, are actually free on the Xbox. This is a big problem, because many of these games are $40 - $70 and my Gamepass for the year was only $80! Hardware The PS5 certainly punches above its weight class in terms of performance, but I’m honestly a little puzzled as to why they made it so much larger than the Xbox Series X. The controller itself is nice, but the triggers are the only new thing. Overall the hardware is decent. The new Xbox has a much better design to it and it’s got a fairly small foot print, so it is pretty cool. The controller on the other hand hasn’t really added anything new, but it is solid. This is certainly an area that MS has an advantage. Interface This generation they’re more alike than different. Microsoft put their settings bar on the left, Sony put theirs down the bottom. You have to press the X or the PS symbol to get to those bars. Ending programs is just a simple click of the menu button on the running game and selecting quit or close. When it comes to multitasking though, this is another area that the Xbox is currently ahead as Sony really hasn’t integrated their solution to multiple games running at once yet. Online With Sony you’re paying for pretty much just the right to be able to play your games online. Sure you get a few games a month, but they’re not always the games you want, that’s for sure. This service can be had for $40 a month on sale. With Microsoft, you can get Live, which functions pretty much identical to PSN. But that’s where the game pass comes in, for $120 a year ($80 if you catch a sale), Or you could go for Game Pass Unlimited, which also includes Game pass for PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming, for about $160 to $200. This doesn’t even cover the quality aspect of each platform. Overall Microsoft’s surprisingly dominant position, in some aspects, of this generations consoles has put us in unfamiliar territory. There’s actually a compelling reason to own both consoles again. Sony for their exclusives and Microsoft for their value. The one thing I will say though, I would recommend waiting for the PS5 and grabbing the series X, until more of Sony’s exclusives come out. I still recommend getting both as it is the smart way to save money on a bunch of games, but wait until the PS5 is more reasonably priced.
