Being a fan of the LOC universe, I was very interested to hear what Ezra would sound like apart from Stza. I didn't really have any idea of what to expect, and honestly was guessing it wouldn't be all of that different. I was wrong. Of course it doesn't sound like a Stza album, because Stza has nothing to do with it. This album shows much more versatility and a vulnerability that you're not going to find on an LOC or SFH release. The sound is much more raw and stripped down than I anticipated. I was resistant at first, to say the least. I'm human. I fear change. But after a few more listens, a line here or there would get stuck in my head and I wouldn't be able to shake it. Born to December truly is the standout track, and even though it's over 5 minutes, it never grows tiring. Divide By is another standout, that I found myself resisting the urge to start shouting out at work. For me, albums that take longer to appreciate stay around longer in the end. There's a relationship that gets formed. When I like something immediately, I tend to find that there's no more mystery later on, it's already shown all of its cards. Just in general, I'd advise giving albums a few more chances. It might be the best choice you ever made.
