The best Pokemon game in a decade or more

I admittedly went into Legends with low expectations, having been burned on sub-par Pokemon experiences as of late. The only truly exciting Pokemon game since X & Y for me had been New Pokemon Snap, due in large part because it wasn't an RPG and didn't play like a traditional Pokemon game. Legends, however, strikes a great balance between exploration and the RPG roots of the mainline titles. The areas to explore are much bigger than I anticipated and every square inch has items to collect or Pokemon to discover. There's nothing quite like seeing your first alpha Pokemon after turning your camera, and the fear it puts into you as you sneak past it (or engage it in battle and swiftly meet your end). Even 25 hours in, I am still getting that feeling of almost limitless discovery, of fear whenever I stray onto the territory of a new intimidating alpha Pokemon. Legends wants you to explore its world but always do so with caution. Its best you to take in your surroundings, line up your target Pokemon, and throw your ball at it (which always is satisfying no matter how small or large the Pokemon is). And I thought it would get old after a while, but it just doesn't. The plot is nothing to write home about, and neither are the visuals. It looks fine, honestly better than I expected after seeing the trailers for almost a year, but it doesn't have the jaw-dropping visual spectacle of something like Breath of the Wild. But it doesn't have to, with a gameplay loop as satisfying as it is. I won't go so far as to say that this the best Pokemon has ever been. But its definitely up there, and definitely something new and exciting for a franchise that has stagnated in recent years.

The game is not like the original Pokémon and there needs to be more fighting of other trainers. Too much story conversations and barely any battles

Im stuck on this game!!! Its great and I was happily surprised at how entertaining it is. I had ordered the game after release but cancelled it because I read some reviews saying it was boring. I could hardly stay interested in some previous pokemon games, so I believed them. I cancelled the order. Days later I saw the good ratings on Best Buy and decided to buy it. I’m glad I did because I’ve been stuck on it since. The last time I spent this much time on a Pokémon game was when I was a kid playing it on the GameBoy. This game is fun, mechanics are great, exploring is fun, and the challenge is definitely there. If you remember that great feeling back in the day but have been bored of the same old style feel of the games over the years, this one will be a nice welcome change. If you’re on the fence, BUY IT! Enjoy it. Take your time and really get into the world. It’s a fun one!

    Good direction for the franchise

This is a great change for Pokemon. It's a fresh new take on the mechanics and general exploration of the world of Pokemon that I'm all for. There's a good amount of side quests that took up the majority of my time playing and the new battle animations are actually quite good. Worst thing about it would be the graphics themselves (looks like a bad Gamecube game) although to be fair, there are a few moments when it actually does look good, and the lack of diversity in the Pokemon. Sure, there are quite a few Pokemon (242 kinds) but for how expansive the world is, you run into a lot of the same Pokemon (like one Pokemon you always see at night in every area when there are so many other nightime Pokemon to choose from) and it gets kinda annoying over time. Of course, I do understand why there aren't as many as there could be (new animations and whatnot), it's just a personal grievance of mine. There's a lot of changes to the mechanics as well, like how freeze, sleep, and even how self-destruct work in battle, and the ability to die from Pokemon attacks is really refreshing. In short, it's basically Zelda: Breath of the Wild with Pokemon. Also, if you've ever played Pixelmon (the Pokemon mod for Minecraft) and enjoyed it, you'll like this game.

    The Future of Pokemon

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Pokemon Legends Arceus presents what is hopefully the direction future Pokemon titles will take. The fluidity and freedom allowed in this game is unlike previous entries in the series which were more rigid in their world structure and gameplay. Although the visuals leave a lot to be desired the art style and pokemon designs/animations more than make up for it. The gameplay loop is satisfying as you are never taken out of the action, it involves catching and battling pokemon as well as gathering resources to craft items such as pokeballs, all of this occurs in the overworld leaving behind the jarring transitions to battle sequences from past titles. The story is a typical pokemon story nothing mind blowing but engaging enough to keep you going. I highly recommend you try this game for yourself and form your own opinion as online forums skew negatively on this title. The best way to put it is that playing this game made me feel the same sense of discovery and excitement as the original entries in the series, this feeling was lost around the time the 3DS titles began releasing.

Not your typical Pokemon adventure. I loved the twist in story and the catching mechanics. I also got my girlfriend into pokemon with this game!

The game is great. I don't know why anyone with two braincells to rub together would leave a review for a product when they are actually upset with the seller. That is ridiculous to me. This game should have a higher review score, they should remove the two reviews about shipping.

Excellent game with an entirely different twist to the typical Pokémon game. The open world concept was amazing in this game, similar to sword and shield, but even better!
