I thought when i purchased it that the heart rate monitor was a built in feature on the watch, its not. You have to wear a strap around the chest. Awkward.

Great as long as you understand the limitations

Overall I think this is an awesome watch to track running/workouts with lots of features and customization options as long as you can look at bluetooth/smartphone notifications as more of a bonus that doesn't always work. What I love: - Accurately tracks GPS, distance/elevation, pace and time while running. It's so much easier than relying on the phone for this. - What you see during your workout is highly customizable via the desktop/web interface as you can set up different types of workout profiles and pick what stats are displayed for each type of workout. - You can also use this interface to set up automatic upload to other services like Strava - that way you just need to sync the watch to your phone via bluetooth after your workout, which updates the Polar account, which then updates these services and it is all pretty instant. Limitations: - No vibration. The beeping is loud enough while running but I often miss smartphone notifications during the day that pop up on the watch. - Bluetooth connection can be spotty. May just be my phone (Moto X) but often the phone/watch connection is lost and I need to open my phone's BT settings screen at which point connection is restored. No problem with syncing once reconnected though. - Auto pause stops everything. If you use the auto pause setting to stop the timer when you stop, it pauses everything and you can't do much. That means you can't time your breaks at the track for example. Other observations: - On a full charge there is more than enough battery to last a full marathon with GPS tracking. - HR monitor works well with included chest strap. Some people prefer the ease of a wrist monitor but I have always used chest strap and you get used to it. I think this is a more reliable way of measuring than the wrist monitor as well.

Works great for me. My workouts include about 30 minutes of HIIT cardio before and after lifting and this watch keeps track of my heart rate the entire time. Battery life is great. If tracking only, battery goes down 1% over night. I also think the lack of email/text notification is a plus. I do not need emails ruining my workouts.

    Slightly Hard To Understand Stats

    Posted .

I do like the M400 w/H7 heart strap! I don't understand goals which should not be based off a question or hours. I saw I was at 147% of my goal, though out of what? It should be by distance or user set. I've noticed a few times my heart rate was 194 and also dropped out, for a minimal tracking time. Also after working out one hour plus, two hours later when resting it will ask me to become active, which I find odd. You can’t track activity in flight mode, I was indoors at work without the chest strap, so what? I honestly feel the chest strap holds me back as I may need to tighten it. I must worry too much that it is going to slip off at any given time. Battery Life is seeming great. App works as intended. There are just a few things that should be tweaked, as stated above. I do find I'm working out more and can track and log my stats. Maybe I’m too picky in hopes Polar will fix some basic features.

    MAJOR Quality Problems

Within the first two weeks, my first watch stopped syncing with the computer via cable and my iPhone via bluetooth. I'm on my second week with my second watch, and it stopped syncing via cable with the computer. Bluetooth sync still works. I'll be taking this one back too. It's a really shame as the watch concept is fantastic. It's the first activity tracker that adapts to running with built in GPS and fantastic for non traditional exercise formats like crossfire.

Too Many Steps To Sync Polar M400 & Virgin Pulse

    Posted .

Since Polar M400 uses Polar Flow Software, it does not directly sync or connect with Virgin Pulse. Per discussions with customer service reps, a user needs to set up an account with Polar Flow, and Polar Personal Trainer (PPT) website. Once this is done you will need to go into setting in PPT and select Virgin Pulse as a partner. It will not transfer activities without heart rate monitor. The reason I gave it 2 stars is because Polar needs to have Polar Flow app directly sync with Virgin Pulse. The Polar M400 and H7 Heart monitor work well but I'm very disappointed at the fact that there are too many steps to syncing my device with Virgin Pulse. Until Polar Flow directly syncs with Virgin Pulse, I cannot recommend this product to my friends or co-workers who are also on virgin pulse.

First purchase would not charge. Box had been previously opened upon purchase and clerk assured it was from potential customer looking at device and returning it into packaging. Alas, there was no quick start guide and the USB cord was not wrapped. Apparently returned by a prior customer and put back into inventory... I exchanged for a new device. With the replacement, the iPhone finds the watch in bluetooth settings, but Polar Flow app doesn't sync to the watch. Repeated error messages on watch that there is no pairable device nearby. Returning again and giving up. Too bad, great luck in the past with Polar.

Purchased tonight and it took over an hour to get it to pair to my iPhone. The date on the app was stuck on 1/1/2014 even though the date was correct on my phone and the app. Also, do not like that the USB port on the back does not come with a rubber seal to protect it. Will return it tomorrow.
