Customers are positive about the Polk Signature Series S55 speakers, frequently praising their exceptional sound quality, strong bass response, and clear highs. Pleased so far. Picked up a couple days ago and powered them up. Very nice. Running a 100 watts RMS per channel through a Technics amp/receiver, on only pushing perhaps 25% of that at most right now. Great sensitivity, great clarity, great bass. I have a vintage pair of three-way Kenwoods I've kept pristine for 45 years, and they still sound not bad, but have some nasty distortion at very specific frequencies at the low end. I'm going to play the same music side by side and compare, for kicks. But have no doubt, these Polks sound beautiful. To really hear a speaker for faithful reproduction, clarity, depth I'll play orchestral music, up loud, to pick out each instrument. I like hard rock, but distorted music, can camouflage a speaker with problems. I definntely recommend these speakers. Enjoyed theme from Gladiator, loud.

I bought these after setting up a vinyl listening rig. Original configuration was an Orbit custom TT, pro-ject pre-amp, and NAD 316bee into a great pair of bookshelf speakers bought at Best Buy. I bought the bookshelf speakers on the classic advice of spending for “quality” over size, dollar for dollar, etc. To be fair - the bookshelves were and are technically a tiny bit better. Clarity, separation and so on, but at the end of the day I always felt like the system was just not quite there in terms of the overall experience.
I bought these towers for about $150 less than I paid for the bookshelf speakers, bi-wired them, and ... wow. To be sure, a little bit less precise, but more than made up for in terms of creating a bigger sound with more low-end. Now my basement escape-the-world listening cave has the full feeling I was after, and I have repurposed the bookshelves in a more appropriate, smaller space.
These speakers are a great match with the 316bee. Amazing sound at a great price point. Will I probably find some reason to try to step things up again later? Maybe, but I don’t think that will be for quite some time.

- I have replaced a pair of Kenwood speakers circa 1998.
- The speakers are powered by Sony STR-DH800 receiver. I also have a Sony subwoofer in the system.
- The speakers sound very clear. They are much better than my older pair.
- However, choosing a right pair of speakers requires lots of research and its actually a factor of taste and budget. I suggest you listen to the speakers in the store (if its possible) before you buy them.
- There are better speakers out there but I am happy wits the sound I am getting with these.

A step up from the S15 Bookshelves I had prior. There is so much clarity in these and while the +/-3dB ratings of 32Hz seems to be a little far fetched, they surely do have a tight sounding bass response, they don't sound muddy or boomy. These are not your Klipsch ear bleeding highs or concert stage sound, they sound crisp and the vocals sound like they are right next to you, very present and clear. Originally paired with a Klipsch R-10SW Subwoofer, however stepped up to dual SVS PB-1000's to pair with these towers, and so far I am extremely impressed. If you can get these on sale, they are an absolute steal for the performance, and to add on the Bi-Amp capability makes them even better for those who like that.

These speakers have been a joy to listen to. They fill my medium sized living room very nicely. I was between these and the Sony CS3. I had the opportunity to listen to the Sony's and I found that the listening experience changed dramatically based on ear level. With the Polks, standing up or sitting down to ear level didn't really change how I experienced sound. They have good bass as well for music, although for movies a subwoofer would be required as it won't be able to deliver those cinematic lows that are required for hard thumps like explosions. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase and they are a joy to own.

This is my second set of Polk Audio speakers. The first set (2 towers, 2 surround, center and subwoofer) where purchased at least 15 years ago and still sound good. I have donated them to a friend. I purchased the complete Signature Series (S35, S15, S55) to replace the donated set. The look, the price and the sound make these an amazing set of speakers. My previous set sounded fine until I installed these. This set is the sound center for my home entertainment system. The center speaker brings the dialogue into the room. When listening to music, especially jazz or classical, I can close my eyes and feel that I am at a live performance. Play some Rock and you can make the whole house vibrate (without turning it up to its highest setting). Pink Floyd never sounded so good. A Denon receiver drives the speakers and after calibration created an excellent sound field that makes almost any seat an ideal listening position. I used 12 gauge (oxygen free) wire and installed banana clips on the ends for easy installation and conduction. This was an excellent purchase that has taken my home theater entertainment system to the next level.

I purchased these speakers to replace a set of small bookshelf speakers that had damaged woofers. Brought them home, hooked them up to my Yamaha R-S202 recover that I use to play music through using Bluetooth/iPad, and wow..., what an incredible sounding set of speakers these are. Crisp highs, great rendering of vocals, and the bass is so deep and well defined. It’s like I’m hearing all of my music for the first time. The bass notes go so low that it sounds like I have a subwoofer connected to the system (I don’t). I’m amazed at how great these sound. I’m very happy that I purchased them.

I bought the complete 5.1 Polk Signature Series along with a Yamaha audio/video home theater receiver and these speakers were the perfect match. These speakers not only look fantastic but they're the best sounding speakers I think I've ever owned. My last system was a Sony and these Polks were half the price but equivalent to, if not better than the Sony. The Yamaha kicks out 400 watts and when I'm watching movies I have em cranked and you wouldn't believe how great they sound, at any level.
I have only owned these several weeks so while I won't be replacing them anytime soon when the time comes I'll be looking at Polks again.

While watching our first movie after upgrading to these speakers, my girlfriend commented "Nice woofers". These speakers are well-made, and heavy. They are also rather tall and would dominate a small room, so check the dimensions. You can connect to them using bare speaker wires or banana-clip plugs, and they support bi-amp connection (optional). The front fabric grille attaches with internal magnets, which is cool, but I'm waiting to see if my cat pulls them off. Made in China, which may explain the recent jump in price.

This is my second set of Polks and these speakers have exceeded my expectations in home audio speakers. The first pair I brought were bookshelf with clean and silky sound and decent bass considering their small size. I love these and still use them today. The S55's have improved upon these qualities, have better imaging and much improved bass response. I have them connected to a Marantz SR-5011. I literally had to turn down the bass control because it was overpowering when watching movies. I don't even need to use an additional sub-woofer with these! Overall the cost to performance ration, you can't beat Polk home speakers.

These things are off the charts amazing. They have the best clarity I've ever heard from a speaker in this price range and below, and they also do better in the bass dept. than previous Polk speakers. If you're on the edge between the S55's and previous polk line's, go with these! Easily worth the extra $$$. They also do very well with or without a center channel. They make everything sound amazing, and pick up even the smallest of details. Using as 50/50 music movies mix.

Towers vs Bookshelf

I first bought the Signature Series 15 bookshelf speakers, and I already have bookshelf speakers for my home theatre system. The speakers are almost 20 years old if you can believe that. They were of course handed down from my parents. Surprisingly the older speakers sounded same compared to the new S15s. So i decided to take them back and buy the S55 Towers. I'm very satisfied with my purchase. They do hold its own without the need of a subwoofer but clear out the bass during intense scenes. I'm very satisfied with the towers. I must have looked at so many Blogs about differences with towers and bookshelf and most of them were correct. I do think towers in front are needed to help envelope you in the surround sound and bookshelf are good for the back.

I enjoy listening to these speakers more than the Polk Rti A7 I used to own. The buttery smooth sound that these speakers produce is pleasing to the ear. They also produce bass with ease and can be enjoyed with or without a subwoofer for music.
Very surprising sound quality at this price point for these speakers. The A7s cost more and are commendable speakers but these are better when listening to music and outstanding for home theater too. They produce a big sound stage with ease paired with a Str dn1080.

Just opened the box a week ago after holding on to it for 2 weeks. I was limping between these polks and the Sony SSCS3. I selected the polks based on the promise of deeper bass. The clarity of the sound coming out of these is great overall. The mids and highs are on point. However, the bass is underwhelming. I am using these with a subwoofer so overall I am pleased with it. But I don’t see how I will keep these speakers without a subwoofer. In my opinion, if you are using a subwoofer then a smaller tower speakers (depending on your room size) may work just as well. I have over 400sqft living area. 5 stars for mids and highs. 3 stars for bass.

These two Polk floor speakers have turned out to be just what I expected and I am mightily pleased. They are located in a large room with not great acoustical qualities but are providing excellent, clear and subtle sound throughout. I am not terribly surprised. While in the Service I purchased a pair of Polk bookcase speakers, which I still have, and they were first-rate. Finally, my new Polk speakers are handsome and add a bit of lustre to the room they are in. I strongly recommend them.

I purchased this as part of a 5.1 system consisting of the two S55s, two S20s, and one s30 center channel, as well as a 12'' polk sub I already owned. So far they have not disappointed. This configuration is well balanced, with clear voices. I do recommend adding a sub if you buy. The bass is great as is, but the sub rounds out deeper tones and rumbles during action scenes. Music is clear and has that warmness Polk is known for. This is great for a mid level setup that won't break the bank while still holding the standard high for audio quality.

I’m a huge Polk speaker fan due to the quality and customer service. If you purchase a pair you will become a Polk fan too! The bass is punchy even with the room expanding Denon 950. They have a very good High range and I can hear separation of all musical instruments with each song that’s played. Overall Imdo believe they were a great choice.

This is coming from a complete novice into the home theater world but I think this is great tower for a first timer. I paired this with a S30 Center hooked to the Yamaha TSR-700. I finally understand why people try to steer you away from sound bars. I have owned an LG sound bar for the last 5 years and once I had this set up my movies came to life. As a 3.0 set up, the tower speakers are very clean sounding and that power port does real work. I have this set up in a fairly large living room but I am holding off on getting a dedicated subwoofer because the bass from these towers are doing just fine. Of course I understand this wont compare to a dedicated sub, but when I compare the sound performance of the power port and my wireless sub of my sound bar, it is miles apart in performance. The cabinet is a beautiful black wood grain vinyl and overall looks great. I would say these have performed better playing my cd's and vinyl.
