This game was basically a movie where you get to make all the decisions. If you're in to games like "the walking dead", you will love this. Personally, I think this is a game I'd rather rent and not buy. Strictly my opinion. The game has received mostly a positive feedback.

I'm into interactive story style games like Telltale's The Walking Dead or Quantic Dream's Beyond: Two Souls. I had heard huge buzz about Until Dawn and decided to sit down and play it with my wife over a half a dozen or so sittings. While I appreciate this style of movie and bad horror films, this combination just didn't do it for me. None of the characters really stood out (aside from Peter Stormare's character) and the story fell apart way too early. So with story and characters falling flat, there were scares and gameplay to win me over. The game has a cool system of tailoring scares based on what you tell Pete Stormare about yourself. It very plainly translates these answers into horror tropes for you. Will you encounter snakes or spiders? Zombies or clowns? It seemed like a rushed version of the same mechanic from the Wii's wonderful Silent Hill Shattered Memories, where there was nore nuance in how the answers impacted the game, even if the results weren't always great. The scares, even when tailored for my phobias did little to encourage any sort of fear. The game is riddled with jump scares (the atmosphere is generally weak at conveying a sense of fear on its own). Not one of these cheap scares got to me. By contrast, I'm still on edge when thinking about 2014's PT. The failure of jump scares if made all the more disappointing by another good-on-paper idea of using the Playstation camera to record your reactions. I didn't connect the camera, but it would have caught a bored and apathetic non-reaction. Rounding out the general disappointment is the gameplay. Gameplay isn't a huge deal in these sorts of games as they're basically decision trees. The decisions and quicktime events were what you'd expect, but the general movement was sluggish in a way that reminded me of early Playstation-era tank controls. It made playing goofy and any potential tension in the game world was overshadowed by fiddling with the controller trying to make my character walk up a set of stairs. It's bot awful, but it is poor and distracting. The game also implements a "don't move" mechanic which comes in the form of a prompt when you need to be silent and still to hide from a baddy. I found this mechanic really hit or miss. I'm not sure what it uses to determine movement, exactly, but I've successfully stayed hidden mid-sneeze and have been caught when the entire room was silent and still. It made those experiences feel like dice rolls more than anything interactive. If you're still reading, it's plain that Until Dawn disappointed throughout. Lots of good ideas on paper, but I didn't feel the developer had any success in execution. There were some fun story moments here and there in the first third of the game, but all the shambling parts fell off far too early.

With so many play options, this game will never be boring.
