Rift apart is a beautiful game. The story absolutely captivated me from start to finish, the cutscenes were masterfully crafted, and there was a healthy mix of platforming and fighting. However, this game fails to separate itself from any other ratchet and clank game. Although rifting to new dimensions was an incredible experience that showcased the power of the PS5, I felt like I had played the game already. The formula of every ratchet and clank experience was yet again used here. Ratchet and clank have some sort of problem, clank gets separated, does some puzzles on his own, and then rejoins ratchet at the end. Essentially, in every game we start with a strong and happy duo, followed by individual growth and longing for each other, finished by a reminder of how great teamwork is. The plot line and themes are old and predictable. Moreover, there was a lack of enemy diversity. I felt like I had already fought the same enemies in other games. Most of the new enemies are just reskins of past enemies, and some enemies are plain reused. Even if the repeat enemies are only there because of the rift openings to other dimensions, I felt bored fighting them. Also, I just didn’t enjoy any of the weapons that were introduced. Yet again, they were all variations of old weapons and sometimes the exact same ones. They felt clunky and uninspired (except the RYNO). Plus, the extra perk from hitting level 5 on a weapon was often unnoticeable. Overall, the biggest compliment I can give this game is its story. The new characters were introduced well and they had a great climax and ending to them. The dialogue was well written and humorous, and it was enjoyable to see every past character’s other dimensional half. In the future, I’d like to see the Ratchet and Clank franchise try something new, as they have done in the past with a few games. Find something truly new to the formula. Take a risk and give us an experience that feels unique.

Beyond the incredibly attractive art style and graphics, this game is also a showcase for the console because of the nearly-seamless SSD loading times. Enabling you to move between different maps and planets within seconds without a actual 'loading screen'. The story is pretty cut and dry, but the characters are entertaining and fun to play as and interact with. The gameplay doesn't shake up the formula to an extreme degree, but the awesome haptic feedback motors in the Dualsense controller help make the physical feel of playing the game more immersive and fun.
