Decent lag-free wireless but Atmos has a catch

PROs: - Lightweight but still secure on the head...remained in place for extended gaming sessions - Wireless setup was button- and trouble-free; once Windows installed the driver for the adapter, connection was instantaneous, lag-free, and strong even a room and a half away - Some nice usability touches: -- Informative voice prompts provide power & connection status and battery level on startup (though they are LOUD prompts so best to wait until they're done before donning the headset) -- Large ridges around the circumference of the volume and gaming/chat optimization dials made adjustment easy in the dark; raised dots on the EQ button made it easy to find and operate the control in the dark/one handed - Yes, the decision to make the ear-cups removable for final adjustments is a strange one, especially with an infinitely adjustable suspension band up top, but it actually helped dial in the fit without risking the loss of truly tweaked, personal ear-cup placement like a sliding assembly might do - "Pure EQ" mode--the default EQ option, actually had a very nice, balanced and non-fatiguing sound signature—it worked equally well for movies, music and especially gaming - Fold the mic up and it mutes, fold it down and you can speak…nothing earthshaking, but it worked well and my teammates reported no problem hearing me online CONs: - Maybe it's just me, but I actually didn't find the headset all that comfortable despite the light weight and customizing options. The elastic suspension headband is relatively narrow and didn't really distribute the weight evenly laterally across the top of MY head. Though they stayed in place for long periods of time, I developed a "hot spot" at the top of my head because the headband was really only contacting a small area. YMMV—and my wife actually found them very comfortable if that’s any indication of how personal the fit and comfort may be for you. That being so, I recommend trying these on beforehand rather than committing to a blind buy if at all possible. - The ear-cup openings appear to be HUGE in the photos...in actuality, the ear pads, though VERY comfortable to the touch, are a bit narrow between the inner edges. I prefer much more space inside the ear cup in an over-the-ear design; if you also don't like pads touching your ears, be aware that these might end up feeling too small - The three EQ modes outside of "Pure" went WAY overboard in my opinion...bass quickly became distorted and uncontrolled (some explosions in GoW4 were almost staticy) in "Seismic" and treble response in both of the other modes became over-exaggerated, almost to the point of distraction...though I suppose if you were trying to hear hard-to-understand dialog in a move soundtrack, the vocal EQ boost would at least be appropriate in that setting - Despite some nice design considerations mentioned in PROs above, there are still some things that could be better: -- An ending battery status voice prompt upon power-down, or at least an LED indicator of battery status, would be nice so I'd know if I needed to charge the headset after several hours of playtime -- The volume and mixer dials are exactly the same size/feel and spaced relatively close together--it was easy to tune the mixer dial by mistake thinking I was reaching for the volume -- The volume dial seemed to turn FOREVER to make an adjustment but the mixer dial just went about 120 degrees—I’d prefer finer movements required to cover less distance on the dial than more time spent covering all that angular distance for relatively small adjustments in volume -- The EQ modes are not spoken aloud like the power, connection and battery status messages but are indicated only by a series of beeps--now I have to remember which EQ signature goes with which of the 4 possible beep patterns - USB receiver is not an Atmos/7.1 decoder per se--it's just the wireless puck; Atmos is enabled via Dolby Headphone code activation in the Windows' store; thus, you cannot take this headset anywhere else aside from the activated Windows box to get simulated surround unless that PC also has Atmos or some other surround simulator on board - Again, YMMV, but I did not find the simulated Atmos to be a game-changer—or even really all that noticeable in the first place. Yes, it created a more expansive soundstage as most surround simulations do, but discrete Atmos panning coupled with pinpoint sound-source localization was not really that convincing and as the function is enabled via Windows download app, I could ultimately get the same surround performance out of any headset now It feels like I have more negative things to say about these headphones than positive, but that’s not really the whole picture. They are wireless (yay), lag-free wireless (awesome), and while I personally didn’t find them ultra-comfortable, I can see where plenty of others would because of the weight and adjustment options. I found the default EQ setting to be optimal (pleasantly so) for virtually all listening material, PC music included—this translates into a very versatile set of cans that don’t require constant tweaking/adjustment to sound their best regardless of what you throw at them. I can’t rightly say that the surround was any more convincing on these than any other simulated surround headset, but what I highlighted as a drawback (non-transportable surround capability) does have an upside. Specifically, if these ever go out on you down the road, the Windows-embedded surround simulation activated via code redemption (included in the box) will apply equally to other headsets you acquire later to use with your PC (or even to other/higher quality cans you might already have on hand). Parting shots: For the price, these are pretty good, with a number of things going for them including the sound, but they just aren’t great--at least not at this price point. If they were a pair of sub-$100 cans, then I might be more forgiving of some of their shortcomings. But at this price, and given that they were not as eye-wateringly comfortable as I had hoped they would be, I wouldn’t universally recommend a purchase sight-unseen based on features/performance alone.

    Excellent for closed back headphones

I'm an open back guy but these closed back impressed me. The soundstage was pretty wide and the isolation is enough to keep the hum of the window unit to a minimum (man cave upstairs only window units there). Easy installation, no conflicts with my existing sound card and being on windows 10 changing output is just a couple clicks away. Being closed back mean the isolate the sound and heat, and I run kinda hot, so long term use had me a bit moist around the ears. I expected as much but that's the nature of these types of headphones. I've only used two other closed back headsets and the sweating is what made me give them up. Upside of close back is lower bass and isolation from surrounding noise, which this set did pretty well in both regards. I didn't install the Atmos yet because on the box it states that it'll be registered to one device, my assumption is the device is not the headset but the computer that it gets installed on. I haven't decided whether I want it on my desktop or laptop to have a decent headset when I travel to my dad's house and would hate that it's locked to a computer I use only once a month or less. Plus if I upgrade my desktop (which technophiles do often) I don't wanna lose the license if Atmos does bring a lot of sound quality to my gaming. I couldn't test the mic because I only have a cell connection for internet so strict NAT and the game I'm currently playing is single player. Clean sound, comfortable for a wide head (some headphones I gotta stretch for days until they're comfortable), and good sound isolation make for a wonderful gaming headset. The price is relatively cheap for the sound quality, but build quality could have been better (more metal IMHO). They do offer upgrades for the headset but just for fashion rather than durability.

    Lightweight & Excellent Sound

I don’t get overly excited about the audio experience of a gaming headset, but this went beyond any expectations I had. It’s very light, and constructed in a way that makes it easy to adjust, and wear for long gaming sessions without the fatigue of using it. The mic auto muted when set in the upward position, and does a great job capturing clear audio. It’s not one that can be bent closer or further from your face, and that’s not a bad thing. The ear cups (not sure if the technical term) are made of a light breathable foam. This makes for a better experience without your ears feeling too warm and it’s a bit more comfortable than those that use leather or vinyl. You’ll find that the USB adapter has a Toslink port for an optical connection. It’s not needed for use on PC, but can be used for a PS4! That’s right, it works cross platform! I was easily able to connect this to my Xbox One, activate Dolby Atmos audio, and enjoy a surround sound experience that can’t be compared to any other headset I’ve used. The audio is very rich, clear, and there is just the right amount of bass for the heavier hitting action sequences in a game. For the PS4, you’ll need an optical toslink cable to make it really work. However, without it you can still pair the headset and get audio, but you won’t be able to isolate game and voice audio using the selection switch. I was able to get a good 5 hours of audio on a charge. Charging it is easy, although I wish it was designed in a way that you could use some sort of dock. It’s just a USB port on the side. It’s not a deal breaker, just a wish list item for a future release. This is a great multi use headset. While you can always buy the one specific to your intended use, the RIG 800HD is easily one of the best gaming headsets on the market, especially when compared to other brands that cost more.

Great wireless headset for PC Gaming!

This is my first wireless headset for PC. I was hesitant on the quality of this headset as I usually don't prefer to do things "wireless" with electronics when it comes to PC gaming. I was always concerned with "lag" or other things. However, this headset has changed my mind when it comes to wireless headsets for PC, at least. The headset itself is light, comfortable on the head, and there is no "lag" that I was worried about. Setting it up/turning it on and using it is pretty easy. The sound quality and microphone are both great quality. Also, as a moderate-casual PC gamer and gaming 2-4 hours at time, sometimes, these headsets are very comfortable on the head and ears. My only gripe with the product is with adjusting the headset to fit. I prefer headsets that you can just "slide" and move to adjust fitting over the ears. With these, you have to pop out the headphones to move them to 1 of 3 placements. I was concerned about this at first because I have a big head, but if it fits my head, it should work fine for the majority of others. Overall, I am really, really enjoying this headset.

Not being able to hear myself talk = deal breaker

These are good headphones overall but at this price the lack of a microphone feedback loop, so I can hear myself talk is a deal breaker. I would not be pleased if I bought these, activated the Dolby Atmos and then found I could not return them. Cons: - Audio picked up by microphone cannot be heard in speakers. The ear cups are a closed sound isolating design. There is no feedback loop from the microphone to the speakers, so it is like talking while wearing earplugs. - The 33” cord on the dongle is too long. Not a problem on a desktop but the cord is a pain while using a laptop. A USB connector on the dongle with a short 6” USB extension cable would have been great. The user could add another extension if they really need almost three feet of cord. - Automated voice at power up is (potentially) too loud. It is linked to the master volume and there isn’t a “cap” so the headphones might SHOUT in your ear when you turn them on. I power up before placing on my head, but Plantronics should design that feature better. - The voice should announce battery life when you power off. What if you have been using them for hours on end? A reminder they are low and need to be charged before next use would be great. - Should have used USB-C for charging the headphones. Reversible USB-C connectors are easier to use in a dark room and would save wear and tear on the charging port. - Doesn’t include optical cable required to mix game and chat audio. - Volume dial should have finer control. You have to turn the dial too much to just to make a small change. - Ear cups have no side to side swivel. Pros: - Works on Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6. There is no Dolby Atmos functionality of course, but the headset works just fine, and Mac OS treats it like any other USB headset. Dolby Atmos for headphones on our two Win10 laptops sounds much better. - I like the self-adjusting head strap, my son doesn’t. Each ear cup can be popped out of the frame and snapped back into one of three positions for extra adjustability. This is a set and forget type of adjustability to customize for your head. - Decent sound but the four EQ settings really don’t improve the sound experience. I leave it on the first setting. - Good range, same as bluetooth. I can go to the next room but not too far. - Good battery life. They charge fast.

These are great headphones for gamers! They have robust features such a noise-cancelling boom mic, great volume control, USB charge connections, etc. Most importantly, they have a comfortable fit which is very important for gamers, who expend hours playing their favorite PC games.

I was not overly impressed with this headset as an experienced user in headsets this did not meet my expectations. I own an older g930's from logitech and as well as Steel Series 7's which both surpassed this. Comfort was ok about what you would expect. Sound about the same just ok not an audiophile but nothing that blew me away. My 2 star rating comes from the ease of use and setup. The pamphlet they send you is very basic on how to connect it to your pc and receiver and I found it to be very sub par. It does not explain any of the features of the headset. It also provides dead HTML links to get drivers and support, both links went to non existent 404 web pages. I eventually went to Plantronics support and got them to link me an actual user guide. I tried searching their support for the Rig 800HD manual and the Rig 800HD was nowhere to be found. The Mic noise cancellation seems to be sub par as well picking up a lot of background noise where as my steel series do not. It does come with a dolby atmos download code but once again I wasn't blown away by it. Honestly if you are in the market for a wireless headset for the price point I would avoid this particular headset. You can do better for around the same price.

I got these 2 days ago, was easy to set up and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed gaming. In fact I was hearing stuff In game that I hadn't heard before. One of my quest lead me to some fallen ruins and the 360 sound was so intense that I found myself flinching for my character!

I have no idea how well these headphones actually work, because when I got home to try them they were dead. I sat and let them charge for a couple of hours, but nothing happened. I tried turning them on again to no success. I may have gotten some dudes, but I am extremely disappointed. I've tried to look up things to fix them online like drivers among other things, but alas to no avail. And with that in mind I will have to return them soon and hopefully get another pair that works. I'm going to wait to see if I can get something from plantronic instead, because this is outrageous.

Hello! Thank you for your review on our RIG 800HD headset, however, we are sorry to hear about your experience. A good friend of mine has this headset as does my girlfriend, both love it however I received my pair today and eagerly went to charge it however there is no charge indicator, it's not lighting up at all (so far it's been charging for 2 hours, at least I hope it is charging) and it won't turn on at all. Is this common or are mine DOA?
