Comfortable, Awesome Sound, Great Connectivity
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros: * Excellent audio quality; both in and out. * Impressive range. * Light and comfortable. * Easy to adjust for best fit. * Microphone flips up for Mute. Cons: * Microphone boom is a bit distracting when up (muted). * Need to use a proprietary dongle (not BT). There are 3 things that a good wireless gaming headset needs; great sound, great comfort and great connectivity (range). This one has all 3! I have been using it mainly for Skype calls on my PC for work. It replaced a nice over-the-head Bluetooth headset that was OK, but this one blows it away for all 3 categories. Fit: It’s really light and comfortable for long-time wear. The modular design allows for easy replacement of parts as well as shifting things around to make it fit better. Sound: Really large speakers that sound great. Onboard EQ settings to punch up the vocals, the bass or the leave it all flat. The flip-down boom microphone works well and mutes the microphone when stowed in the up position. The only small nit on this is that when up, the boom mic is a bit distracting in my peripheral vision. Connectivity: The headset uses a proprietary 2.4gHz wireless transmission which is great because it doesn’t conflict with WiFi, Bluetooth or any other common radios, but it also requires the use of the included transmission dongle. No big deal, but you have to consume a USB port and have something dangling off it. Overall, I’m really happy with this headset. The onboard volume wheel and auto-muting microphone boom are really convenient and I can now walk all around my house while on conference calls with my PC in the other room.

Great wireless headset
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the most comfortable pair of over-the-ear headphones I've ever used. The headset has very soft pads, and there are 3 adjustment slots on each side so that you can find the most comfortable location. It's the first pair that hasn't hurt my ears being a glasses wearer I generally can only use earbuds or behind the head style sets or it causes sever pain after an hour or two. I was able to walk around my house while staying connected and no loss of audio quality except for when I went into my garage which was about 50 feet away and several rooms away. The sound quality is really good, and the headset has a 4 position EQ preset button that allows you to switch on the fly. I did experience some distortion when I had the extra bass EQ enabled, and turned the top volume control to the highest setting out of three. In the middle position, the distortion wasn't present while using the main volume control. The headset has audible signals when you do various actions like lowering / raising the mic, 1, 2, 3, or 4 beeps so you know which EQ position you're on, and a voice that tells you when the headset is turned on. Pretty useful features in my opinion! So far very pleased with the headphones! Would definitely recommend to a friend. Only complaint is the inner packaging. The finger slot for getting out the receiver is too small, so I had to find something I could pry that out with. I was a little worried I would damage the unit, because it was in there pretty tight, but it popped out fine. Would be nice if that wasn't so snug in the plastic, and the slot was larger.

Wireless Headphones with a fantastic Freq Range
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These headphones I was skeptical of at first. I got them in the mail and opened them up. After adjusting the headphones for my size head it felt like i had a cloud of air placed upon my head. After 10 minutes of use I almost forgot they were there! I loaded up overwatch and let the game load up when i heard the intro loading music and I was able to hear tiny parts of the music i didn't know existed before I tried on these headphones. The microphone is okay, nothing fantastic, but acceptable for the wireless feature set it boasts. I listened to music and was just immersed within every single beat of every song i listened to. Now the true test, I walked away behind a wall and the transmission to my headphones was still clear as day. I walked 50 feet away from my computer into the kitchen with some line of sight and still clear as day. Latency was a concern to me as well. None to be had with this headset. If you are looking for an all immersive gaming headset this is the one for you!!

A Bass Hit Just Shy of a Home Run
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was quite surprised to find that Plantronics, a brand I had known only for office-oriented headsets and microphones, had entered the gaming headset category. The RIG 800HD represents a solid effort at breaking into the space with high-fidelity wireless sound in a comfortable headset that weighs shockingly little, but some quality issues mar an otherwise impressive experience throughout. Please note I do not own an Xbox One, and thus my review and opinions are based on my experience using the device on a Windows 10 PC. - Packaging & Installation Upon opening the box, I was disappointed by the sparse documentation. One could argue a headset needs very little, but in this case I had to guess at how to pair it with the receiver (it’s somewhat intuitive - hold the power button past its “on” position for a few seconds, then press Link on the breakout box). An included XBOX Live code redeems the Atmos app on the Windows or XBOX store. Besides these, there was very little provided on how to configure the headset, and the online setup guide was a link to a knowledge base that did not provide any drivers. However, this is as plug-and-play as it gets; once connected, Windows installed its default driver (running Windows 10 build 1803 here) and the headset works fine. However, this later revealed a major issue that I’ll get into in the Hardware & Software Quality section below. - Design & Comfort I have a large head, and finding a headset or pair of headphones that fits comfortably and stay in place with ease is quite the challenge. Plantronics seems to have thrown us large-meloned nerds a huge bone here, as this is bar none the most comfortable headset I have ever worn. The three-stage size adjustment, combined with generously padded, fabric-wrapped ear cups and an elastic band under the mesh headstrap, all combine to yield a soft yet firm grip on the head. The headset itself only weighs about ten ounces. I found myself wearing the headset comfortably for much longer periods than I did with my prior headsets, and there’s adequate ventilation around the ear pads to keep your head cool after an extended gameplay session. I would’ve liked to see a little more design flair with accent materials like aluminum or steel, but these would undoubtedly increase the headset’s heft. The swingarm microphone is a nice touch that adds convenience, and the microphone mutes when it’s in the fully retracted position. Probably the most intuitive and graceful mute option I’ve seen in a headset in a long time. Control buttons are easy to find without taking off the headset, though feeling your way around to find these buttons might take up valuable time that could be better spent on the battlefield. - Sound Quality The use of a proprietary USB dongle trades convenience (no bluetooth at this price point is a bummer) for fidelity. These headphones lost very little in the transition to wireless, delivering high quality sound that doesn’t drop out even at long distances from the base. The headset’s sound reproduction is very good. Bass reproduction is solid, delivering a surprisingly good balance of “punchy” and “boomy” sound at all but the lowest of frequencies, which tends to phase some (though most wireless headphones do). Mids are clear, and high frequencies trail off some, but overall the sound experience is excellent for gaming, and good for music and movies. Unfortunately the maximum volume isn’t very loud, and I found myself running the volume at 80 to 90% to hit my usual loudness. These headphones don’t isolate outside sound, so running these in an environment with anything more than moderate background noise will be difficult. Luckily, the microphone features ample noise cancellation and good voice pickup, so noise won’t be much of an issue for those on the other end of the line. The four onboard equalizer modes change the sound in modest ways. Pure EQ delivers the audio unchanged from the PC. Seismic EQ increases the bass substantially, delivering an intensely “boomy” bass effect that is a lot of fun to use in games with a lot of explosions. Intensify EQ cranks up the highs in an attempt to deliver a crisp sound experience but makes the sound too tinny. I noticed a subtle difference from Pure EQ to Vocal Focus EQ, but it wasn’t substantial enough to make a difference in gaming. An important point to note is that the Dolby Atmos support is simulated, as it is with nearly all headsets capable of the feature. This works at a software level, adjusting the phase of a given sound into the headphone mix to give the noise a sense of ahead, behind, above, or below the listener. In games, the positional audio works to give the impression of a “wider” area of sound; e.g. an object to your far left sounds further away than one ahead of you on the left. It didn’t seem any easier or any more difficult to pinpoint enemies in FPS games, but the sense of scale that Atmos provides definitely helps with the immersion factor. I found myself particularly enjoying racing games supporting the feature, which brought an incredible sensation of engines roaring and tires howling for grip like they do in a real car being driven at, and beyond, its limits. - Battery & Range The advertised 24 hour runtime is spot-on. I’m on hour 20 of continued use from a full charge and I’m only now getting low battery notifications. I’m extremely impressed as most other headsets need a charge after less than half that time. As the battery runs low, range does not suffer. The wireless range on these is fantastic. I had to walk well over 25 feet away from the USB dongle with multiple walls and a router in-between before sound started to intermittently cut out. I had no problem maintaining a conversation while going to the kitchen on another floor to get a drink. - Hardware & Software Quality Unfortunately, the headset loses points from a significant hardware issue that is compounded by a software issue. Out of the box, the left side speaker is louder than the right, which causes all sounds to be off-center. Usually this is fixable through configuration (adjust the balance), but the Windows drivers that this headset uses have NO option to adjust the left-right balance. Further, Plantronics does not provide a driver for this headset, the support page offers no solution for such adjustments, and Plantronics’ headphone hub software does not recognize this headset. I had to install third-party software to manually adjust the left speaker by -1.5 dB to get the sound centered. This was extremely disappointing. Some online research reveals I am not alone with the left-right issue, making me wonder if this is a design flaw that permeated through production. Unfortunately there are other small issues. The headset buttons are loose in their moulds and audibly rattle some when you turn or shake your head. Adjusting the dial to change the balance between game audio and chat audio (which is only supported when game audio is connected via optical cable to the USB dongle) causes loud, jarring static to play in the headphones. All input sound stops when the headset delivers a status update or EQ mode is changed. The small issues are not dealbreakers, but the audio imbalance is something that not every user will be able to correct, and thus prevents me from recommending the headset without caveats. It’s still a solid device but the additional configuration shouldn’t be necessary. - Bottom Line The drawbacks don’t outweigh the positives. It’s difficult to find a comfortable, lightweight headset with high quality sound at any price point, and being able to work around the biggest issue on PC means the RIG 800HD is my go-to gaming headset. I still can’t get over just how comfortable these are, and although no headset has yet to compete with my dedicated audio equipment, Plantronics’ offering is good enough to make this audiophile happy to gain some convenience without sacrificing all too much in the acoustics department. If the above issues can be addressed, the company’s next headset should be a winner.

Comfortable headset!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This headset is the most comfortable headset I own. The fit is great and they feel light on your head. The mic cuts of when you lift up the mic so it may be an issue if you constantly lift repeatedly. Can’t complain about anything.

Good set; one downside (humor)
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As wireless headphones go, these are up there in quality... Large over the ear set... with good battery life. Easy to recharge, Easy to connect, and easy to use. The Dolby Atmos; I had to test it with a movie, and it does work... maybe not as good as my home Atmos system, but it does work on the smaller headphone scale. So the only downside on this, and I mean this humorously.. When you have these on, and have a little bit of volume... you can't hear much else if anything.... Family members have to yell, and get visual contact with the wearer, because they get so immersed .

Quality headphones
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is an excellent headset for video gaming. Plantronics exited these device a while ago so it's good to see them back with a quality device. The comfort level is high even when you have marathon gaming sessions. The fit is comfortable even for my large head :-) They adjust easily. The sound quality is excellent. This is noticeably better than my last set which was a less expensive set. Although these headphones support Dolby Atmos, there aren't many games that currently feature that sound quality. These are a bit expensive, but I believe worth the price.

Great sound, good bass, no setup required
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I first received these headphones and went over the instructions, it had me go to the plantronics website to download drivers. After navigating to the correct page, there didn't look to be anything to download except some kind of plantronics setup software. I downloaded and installed that, and when it said to plug in your USB peripheral, it told me that nothing was found. Windows (10) however gave me a notification that my new device was installed, so I turned on the headphones, they paired right away, and I was hearing sounds out of them. So I uninstalled the plantronics software, and kept going. First impressions: The sound quality on these is amazing! Deep bass, rich tones. After installing the Dolby software and checking out some Atmos surround trailers, I truly felt immersed in what I was watching. The headband style is very comfortable to wear for extended periods without the pinching feeling that other headphones bring. It's even comfortable to use while wearing glasses. Gaming: Battle royale style games are all the rage with the kids these days, and the secret to surviving is knowing where your enemies are at all times. The positional audio cues in Fortnite and Overwatch all came through loud and clear to let me know that I was being flanked from the left and behind. The mic picked up my voice cleanly, according to my teammates, who ignored my warnings and proceeded to push the objective. Being able to adjust the game and chat mix was great when I wanted to key in on our tactics, such as "fight on the point", and "quit rushing the choke if you're supposed to be healing". After I was done losing to smurfs and trolls, I unplugged my usb receiver from my PC and plugged it into the dock on my Nintendo Switch. To my surprise, it was compatible, and soon I was enjoying some single player action to calm my nerves. Cons: The ear cups are a little small for my ears, so they feel a little squished when surrounded by them. The foam is also very thick and heavy, and it gets pretty hot under there. I've had to stop a few times to wipe the sweat out from around my ears. After removing them after an extended session, the sweat absorbed into the foam made them feel clammy and gross, so I just played through my speakers for a bit while the ear cups dried out.

Comfortable and amazing sound
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Love that these are wireless. I really like that the mic moves up out of the way and mutes when it does. Super easy to use. Plugged the connector into the usb on my computer. Installed instantly. These headphones fort really well. They announce battery level when you turn on which is nice. They are so comfortable I almost forget I am wearing them. I also make online video tutorials and these worked perfectly for those too. I have no issues. Hess are great. Battery life is good. Love that they are wireless.

Hard to pick an overall rating ... Too many misses
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Presentation The packaging is typical and nothing noteworthy. The complete omission of comprehensive instructions was a complete shock. Not what I would have expected in a $100+ product. The inclusion of the Dolby software license key was essential and I am glad it was provided. The headphones themselves are light, logically ergonomic and easy to control with the positioning of the scroll wheels and switches. Although not the most sexy pair of wireless PC/Gaming headphones, the mainly black presentation with subtle color accents is still sort of cool. Adjustability is limited with only 3 positions for the cans achieved through a rather clunky ‘snap in’ arrangement. The tension band below the main band structure IS very comfortable and adjustable but this design is not optimal in my mind … in terms of a complete, personal comfort fit. The snap action of cans into the band doesn’t appear to be a design attribute akin to something “long lasting”. One side note – consumer products released in 2018 should be using a USB-C connector anymore. MicroUSB is prone to damage and wear. I’ll just leave it at that… Initial Setup The steps to get these ‘installed’ on a PC were clear enough in the included pamphlet and the instructions to enable the Dolby Atmos app in Windows 10 was pretty much self explanatory & went off without a hitch. The rest is rather rudimentary as the controls integral to Windows 10 is all you get with respect to choice of codec and basic sound control parameters… that and whatever application you may be using at the time and its ability to adjust the sound. (e.g. EQ, bass boost, etc, etc.) Performance I ran through the 4 built-in sound-field enhancement settings that are selected via a button located on the bottom of the right ‘can’ and honestly, “Pure” was the only tolerable setting across music, gaming and the plethora of Dolby demo content available through the windows app. 1st about music fidelity. As other have mentioned, the overall gain (volume potential) of these headphones is subpar to other wireless setups I have reviewed and even more so vs. the few wired gaming headsets I own and regularly use. I’m OK with a little less gain on a wireless platform compared to a wired setup but the RIG 800HD’s are just a bit too quiet for my taste. Running through a variety of modern pop, jazz and live recordings I found that the overall fidelity was too bright – even in the “Pure” mode – and didn’t represent anything close to being a flat response. From 500 Hz and up, these headphones are simply WAY TOO BRIGHT out-of-the-box and I don’t believe any type of burn-in time will remedy that. Sound staging for stereo material didn’t have the best imaging qualities either. At moderately high to full volume levels I noticed quite a bit of bass frequency clipping in addition to a rough character to the mid-range and higher frequencies. My best description of the roughness is something like a ‘sand paper effect’. So in a nutshell, not for music listening at anything more than low volume levels or ‘relaxed’ listening. With respect to gaming, the experience was noticeably better. I ran through ‘Quake Champions’ and ‘Modern Warfare Remastered’ – which are both recent products – and the clarity boost from the bright nature of these cans was acceptable. Bass boom/low frequency clipping was still apparent in ‘Pure’ mode and exacerbated in the other settings. Staging in the simulated surround environment of gaming was good enough to have a few ‘wow factor’ opportunities but still not up to par when compared to the wired headsets I’ve been using. My best overall experience with these headphones was met when I ran through the abundance of Dolby demo material provided in the Windows 10 app. There was good staging albeit not what I would call a truly ‘360 degree’ experience but pleasing none the less. My biggest complaint in this regard would be the forward or front to back staging of sound objects and their movement across the three dimensional space. Oddly enough, I personally felt the ‘height’ of the Dolby experience with these headphones. Object movement was smooth and natural and the overall fidelity of the soundscape was quite pleasing …again the only real problem I experienced was the lack of any apparent depth or space – front to back – in the sound field. Summary Fairly amazing sound reproduction of Dolby demo material. Good reproduction of gaming sound with a few limitations at higher volumes. Terrible reproduction of music material. Somewhat restricted adjustments of the fit & function but still comfortable for long listening sessions. Missed opportunity to provide a better customer experience with more detailed instructions in the box, covering both the setup and installation of the necessary Dolby app. The more tech inclined consumer will certainly figure these things out but the experience should be tailored for everyone. MicroUSB port. Come on! Really? I can only recommend these cans for those people that will be watching a lot of Dolby Atmos movie content on their personal computer. That said, I’m not entirely sure that this particular functionality is worth the steep price of admission. Gamers can skip this model altogether and hope for some newer Plantronics offerings in the future. I honestly believe giving 3 stars is being generous ...

Extremely Comfortable Headset
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very comfortable headset for extended use. I was looking for a set that had the ability to adjust both level and frequencies, and these do. Sound quality is outstanding and they do a good job of isolating outside noises. The microphone is sensitive enough to pick up low vocal volumes but does not pick up extraneous noises. Pleased with these.
